Review – Cool Sculpting Treatment, A New Non-Invasive Way To Loss Fat

.

During my 20s and early 30s, many peers will always admire my flat tummy and slim waistline. All thanks to my active lifestyle and high metabolism rate.

Fat began to store around on tummy when I reached my late 30s even though I was having the same lifestyle and eating habits as before. The truth is as I age, my basal metabolic rate decreases and with the loss of lean body mass too. And now at 40s, I can’t afford to eat the way as I used to, I have to cut down on fatty and sugary food. I hate those lumps, bumps and bulges. Hence, I refrain from wearing tight fitting clothing and I prefer to wear something loose fitting now.

Of course the best way to eliminate the flabby tummy is to undergo liposuction. Even if this is the best and only solution, I will never go for it because of many bad reports on liposuction that have “gone wrong”. In early Jan 2010, a 44 year-old man died after undergone liposuction treatment at a general practitioner’s clinic.

And recently, I have met up with Dr Chee, the founder of Wen and Weng Medical Group, a reliable and trustworthy doctor whom I have known for more than 10 years. What I like about him is that he never once hard sells or pushes me on signing up any package or treatment. I always feel comfortable whenever I go for a consultation or treatment at his clinic. He gives honest advice and on some occasions he even discourages me from taking up some treatments that he reckon do not work on me. And best of all, he never overcharges me! ;-)

And after sharing my concern on my abdominal bulge, he suggested that I may give CoolSculpting a try.

CoolSculpting is considered the newest non-invasive treatment to reduce fat. This treatment may not be suitable for everyone though. Dr Chee analyzed my tummy and concluded that I’m actually a right candidate for this new treatment. This treatment is ideal for people who are not fat but the little bulge is just enough to show through a snug-fitting t-shirt or blouse. And these small areas of fat don’t seem to warrant a surgical procedure.

.

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting, developed by ZELTIQ, is a new non-invasive procedure for fat layer reduction. This revolutionary procedure, developed by a team of scientists and physicians, uses a precisely controlled cooling method called Cryolipolysis to target, cool, and eliminate fat cells without damage to neighboring tissue.

After a one-to-three hour CoolSculpting procedure with your doctor, your body goes to work. Over the next two to four months, the crystallized fat cells break down and they are naturally flushed from your body.

On average, each CoolSculpting procedure will result in a 20% reduction of fat in the treated area. After the initial treatment cycle is completed, you can attain further reductions with additional procedures although some patients may find that one treatment is sufficient for them to achieve their goals.

.

CoolSculpting Procedure

Before the CoolSculpting procedure, a therapist was assigned to me and helped to take measurements such as my weight and BMI.

.

After the necessary measurements were done, Dr Chee further analyzed my abdomen and did some markings that will help to position the device on the abdomen later. See my flabby tummy (insert picture) when I sit down. So unsightly right!

No general/topical anesthesia or pain medication is needed before the procedure.

.

The therapist first took out a cooling sheet and gently placed it on the marking area before applicator cup was used.

.

The applicator cup uses gentle vacuum pressure to draw bulge up between the two cooling panels. Upon suction, I instantly felt a pulling sensation which was caused by the vacuum pressure in the area being treated. This firm pull is enough to ensure the tissue will be cooled most efficiently.

.

The uncomfortable tight pulling feeling fortunately only lasted for a minute or two. All thanks to the therapist who was very attentive and advised me that I should relax and not think about it too much. The relaxation has helped to ease the muscle and reduce the uncomfortableness of the pulling sensation.

As the panels go to work in the first few minutes, I also felt a sensation of intense cold that goes away in a few minutes.

.cool sculpting

I can either sit or lie down during the procedure, depending on the area being treated. This procedure will usually take from 1 to 2 hours depending on the number of placements. In fact, before the procedure, the therapist has suggested that I should go for my toilet break as I need to start the procedure all over again if I happen to stop half-way.

To ensure I feel comfortable for the next 1 hour, the therapist has offered newspapers and magazines for my reading pleasure and even suggested I should take a short nap, well that was what I intended to do too………zzzzzzz………..

.

After an hour later, the therapist gently pulled out the applicator cup and removed the cooling sheet to review my red swollen tummy. OMG!! Is that my tummy? It looks so alien! Does it resemble Ayers Rock mountain to you? Hee hee……..

I felt a sense of relief immediately after the procedure and I felt stiffness on the treated tissue when the applicator cup was removed.

.

So this is the applicator cup that gently draws tissue between the two cooling panels.

.

Next, the therapist gently massaged the treated area for about 8 minutes. The tummy is slightly flattened and the redness has reduced after the massaging.

.

I still felt a temporary dulling of sensation or numbness in the treated area. In fact, this is normal and will resolve within a few hours up until eight weeks after the procedure. The vacuum has caused slight tenderness to the touch that is typically resolves within a few weeks.

There is no recovery time and I can resume my normal activities after the procedure.

.

Cryolipolysis is a precisely controlled cooling method that targets, cools, and eliminates fat cells without damage to neighboring cells.

.

Review & Result after CoolSculpting Procedure

The redness on the treated area was gone within a day after the procedure although some patients will experience persistent redness that may last for a few days.

The only thing that I’m not comfortable about this non-invasive treatment is the soreness and tenderness in the treated area that last for almost two weeks. It is as if there is a layer of cloth covering the treated area, I can’t even feel my skin at all. Although it is common to have bruising on the treated area that may last for a few weeks but fortunately there is no bruising at all.

Three weeks after the procedure, I didn’t see any differences at all. On the fourth week, I noticed the bulge has been minimally reduced in size.

Although my abdominal bulge was not very obvious even before the procedure, but I’m glad to see significant result after one and a half month later. The bulge is so much smaller and my tummy looks firmer too. My tummy is almost flattened! My weight has also reduced from 52.5kg to 50kg.

I’m glad that one treatment is all I need to address my problem whilst some patients may require a few treatments to attain their goals.

Overall, I’m very happy with the amazing result and I will highly recommend CoolSculpting for anyone who wants to reduce fat without going under the knife. No cutting, no needles and no downtime!

Cool Sculpting is an extremely safe and effective fat reduction procedure and it is definitely a great alternative to replace dangerous invasive liposuction treatment.

Is it permanent?

Well, you probably will ask if the result is permanent? When you have your CoolSculpting procedure, the treated fat cells will be eliminated. As long as you maintain your weight with diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable.

Where should I go for CoolSculpting?

For those who are interested to try CoolSculpting, you may want to look for Dr Chee at Wen & Weng Medical Group. He’s very professional and reliable, and he will always give honest opinion on any enquiry. The therapist at the clinic is friendly and attentive too. The prices are reasonable and the charges for CoolSculpting range from S$1000 to S$1500 depending on the area treated. I believe he will give a package price if you are treating on two areas or more. For my abdominal bulge, it costs S$1500. ;-)

I’ve done my CoolSculpting treatment at The Medical & Rejuvenation Centre (one of the clinic under Wen & Weng Medical Group).

  1. paganini says:

hey Shirleen, thanks for reviewing this thoroughly! Been interested in this procedure for so long already. I read that further results can be seen after 3-4 months. Maybe you can give us an update then :)

  2. Shirleen says:

    Hi Paganini,

I hope so. So far so good. ;-)

  3. Thanks so much for showing us each step and exactly what it does before and after! You are great!

  4. paganini says:

hey shirleen, please update us on further dev k? :) how many inches in total have u lost since your treatment?

  5. Shirleen says:

    Hi Paganini,

In fact, I didn’t lose much on inches but my tummy is so much flatter now.

  6. Paganini says:

how come you didn’t lose much inches when your tummy flattened out? We have almost the same body type. I am not flabby too but my tummy is bulging out a bit so I’m really considering this treatment so I can get rid of the stubborn part.

  7. Shirleen says:

    Ya Paganini,

Probably about 1/2 inch reduction only. In fact, the result for the fat reduction is about 20%. I will need to control my diet in order to upkeep my flat tummy.

  8. Nuna says:

I did the procedure last night but i am beginning to have doubts…
After the procedure, the machine reflected an error msg and thus I do not know if it is working or not!
    What should I do?

  9. Shirleen says:

    Hi Nuna,

Oh no! Just curious, may I know where did you go for the procedure?

Is the doctor aware of the error msg? Is your tummy feels sore or numbness now?

  10. Nuna says:

I do not know. I have left an email with the doctor.

The whole scenario was that, about 35th minute through the procedure, I could feel that air was coming out from right side of the suction holder, and then left side, and then right side and left side again. It lasted for about a few minutes. Its only after an hour later, the staff came in and checked on me and asked if I moved or not? Of course, I did not. Who would have move as the whole suction holder is so heavy and because I did not move, my back ached after the 1 hour procedure. The staff went to take pictures of the error message which said “discontinue use” and “card has expired. Please replace a new card”???
I would not have realised any thing funny if not for the staff who went to take pictures of the error message. After that, she just happily led me out of the room. However, i did fill up a comments thingy to comment about the whole procedure.
On my way back home, the more I think of it, its seriously not right somehow!!! I tried to “google” if other people had the same encounters as me but did not find any.
Hmm… now, i am so worried that my money has gone down the drain!
    Sigh…

My tummy is feeling a bit sored now.
    I am so sianz…

  11. Nuna says:

I have spoken to the doctor and he said as long as I have completed the 40-mins procedure, its considered quite safe. We will only know of the results 2-3months later.
If need be, there will be a touch-up on the area again, which means that I have to pay a portion of the fees! :(
    Sianz…

  12. Shirleen says:

    Hi Nuna,

It’s supposed to be an hour treatment actually and I think 40 minutes may not be sufficient. I remembered during my procedure, the doctor has suggested I should go for a toilet break before the procedure because if I happen to stop halfway, I will need to restart the whole 1-hour procedure again.

You don’t have to wait till 2 to 3 months to see result. In fact, after barely a month, I managed to see result actually.

You shouldn’t fork out $$ again for a touch-up for an undone procedure. It is their responsibility to ensure the procedure is done correctly and completely.

You may want to send your feedback to ZELTIQ, the company who produce Cool Scrulpting. Fyi, I believe there are about 10 doctors in Singapore having this machine. And I also believe ZELTIQ would not want any of their selective doctors to tarnish their brand.

  13. Nuna says:

That is how I felt too! Why should I pay for a touch-up where it was no fault of mine?
Seriously, if I am to do it again, I would not go back to that doctor and clinic because I have lost faith in them.
My opinion is that, if it is clearly the machine’s fault, shouldn’t the doctor ask me to do the procedure again?
It was quite irritating due to the fact that when I was doing the treatment, the clinic’s staff came in 3 times to take something out of the room but neither of them bothered to take a look at the machine or me to see how I was doing.
I think I shall email Zeltiq to question on their machine to see if it is clearly a 1-hour procedure or 40-mins procedure.

  14. nicole says:

    Hello!

im just wondering, the whole procedure for your entire abdominal is 1.5k? is yours the bigger machine?

  15. Shirleen says:

    Hi Nicole,

Yes correct 1.5k for the abdominal area. Not too sure what you mean by bigger machine. You may want to peek the machine from images above.

  16. nicole says:

oh, how many placements is that for your abdominal? is that counted as one at your doctor’s? cos i heard from other forums that usually the tummy area is split into 4 placements!

    also,
did he advise u on any kind of diet or how to prevent the bulge from returning?

    thanks sooo much!

  17. Shirleen says:

    Hi Nicole,

Only one placement is required on my abdominal. The applicator cup is actually quite big and there’s no point of having 4 placements on the small area.

Dr Chee advised me to watch my diet as to avoid the bulge from returning.

  18. mae says:

    Hi Shirleen,

Do you know if this treatment can be done on other parts e.g. thighs?

    Thanks!

  19. Shirleen says:

    Hi Mae,

CoolSculpting can be done on other parts but not too sure if it can be done on thighs. You may want to consult the doctor.

  20. jo says:

    Hi Shirleen,

i am going to wen & weng soon for coolsculpting on thighs. I read some reviews that after the procedures, on the 3rd days, the treated areas will feel itchy & needle pain for about 2 weeks. Is that true?

I dared not do on my fat tummy cos i am afraid there will be side effect if i want to have baby in future.

  21. Shirleen says:

    Hi Jo,

No I didn’t feel any itchiness or needle pain at all. I only feel soreness and tenderness on the treated area for almost 2 weeks.

  22. jo says:

    Hi Shirleen,

Glad to hear that no itchness & pain cos i can’t stand itchness.

I am considering on my butterfly arms too but dr chee said might not work on my arms.

Hence, hope coolsculpting can really help me to reduce my fat & firm my body.

    Thanks.

  23. Shirleen says:

    Hi Jo,

I’m really excited for you, hope you will like the result. ;-)

  24. jessie says:

hi may i know how much they charge per area…

  25. jessie says:

hi sorry had just read the above comment, it 1.5k ..ya i heard for tummy really need to do a few area…not sure is their applicator cup across the board is the same size or they got few size…cos base on the pic it relatively big…which mean can cover almost the whole lower abs…btw you are doing just the lower abs ??? Had your lower abs still seen loss in inches till now or your 0.5 inches is the final result actually i got a slight bulge on my lower abs no matter how i excise , crunches it just cant really tone or getting any slimmer.maybe i just not getting hard enufff

  26. Shirleen says:

    Hi Jessie,

Apologize for not able to reply your comment earlier. Was having a long trip in Japan ;-)

I believe you will only need one treatment/area for tummy as the applicator cup that I used is pretty big. Not too sure how many sizes of applicator cups are there.

Yes, I only did CoolSculpting procedure on my lower tummy area. Frankly, my little bulge came back again lately, although not as big as before. Maybe because I’ve been indulging with great food for the past 11 days in Japan and I have put on 2kg after the trip.

Although CoolSculpting is great alternative to risky liposuction, I believe maintenance is very important too. You will still need to watch your diet to maintain the flat tummy.

  27. Shagwah says:

Hi Shirleen. Just wondering if you went back for more cool sculpting on your tummy. Can it be done more than once on the same area? As you said, no matter how much exercise you do the tummy doesn’t budge.

  28. Shirleen says:

    Hi Shagwah,

No I didn’t, I’ve only done once. I reckon once should be sufficient and you probably have to maintain it with proper diet and exercise.

  29. sparkle says:

Hey Shirleen, do you think this is effective for the arms? i HATE my fat arms!!!

  30. Shirleen says:

    Hi Sparkle,

I’m not too sure though. If I can recall correctly, doctor ever mentioned that it can be done on the upper arms too.

  31. Sparkle says:

thanks Shirleen, i’d prob consider this when i reach close to my ideal weight which is like about 8 kgs away :( and i know that my arms will still be awful even upon reaching that level. but will make more sense to consider this only losing all the weight u can i think.

  32. Shirleen says:

    Hi Sparkle,

Jiayou! Maybe toning exercise will help better for your flabby arms. If the flabby arms are due to loose skin instead of fat gain then CoolSculpting may not help much. :-)

  33. Rona says:

    Hi Shirleen,

How’s the tummy now? I’m thinkin of going to your doc for a treatment. Does the doc check you first before recommending this treatment? Can I just walk in to say I like to have this treatment on my tummy?

  34. Shirleen says:

    Hi Rona,

No I guess the doctor will prefer to check on you first before recommending the treatment.

As of now, my tummy is pretty fat although the little bulge will reoccur again at times especially during my period.

  35. Judith says:

I had this procedure done this week. There was a representative from the machine company in the room with me. The staff insisted that anything less than 60 mins attached to the machine is insufficient, and would not have done the job. So I was a little surprised on reading some of the above comments, regarding time. I was also told that this is not an appropriate treatment for cellulite problems.

  36. Kristy says:

The cool sculpting applicator comes in different sizes, many people will use one applicator on the lower abbs, but when the fat cells die in the lower abbs the fat in the upper abbs are more noticeable in comparison to the lower abbs that are nice and flat. It can even look like a “ledge”. One applicator does not cover both upper and lower abbs.

So You will use one applicator on lower abbs for one hour, then treat upper abbs for one hour. ( This is considered 2 treatment areas) The flanks/ love handles is a third area, however you will treat one side first with one applicator, then the other side with the same applicator for one hour. So if you treat upper and lower abbs and sides (flanks) it will be a total of 3 treatment areas and 4 hours of treatment. Not everyone will need to treat 3 areas, but this is why Jessie may need more than one applicator.

It costs the provider money every time the cooling device is turned on, they are paying for every treatment/hour, so they will charge accordingly.

The amount of treatments can be 1-4. You will see a significant change with one, but most people do 2. In some cases 3 and maybe up to 4, but 2 is common. Treatments can be done as soon as 4-6 weeks apart.

You can start to see a difference as soon as 3 weeks, 3 months is optimal. After 4 months you will not see any new loss. Everyone is different, depending on how they metabolize fat.

FYI- just had a treatment today and I work in a plastic surgeons office that offers this treatment.

  37. Shirleen says:

Thanks Kristy for these informative info. Is it popular in US?

  38. Shirleen,

To your question is it popular in the u.s. Somewhat! It’s getting there because there are other different procedures that will compete with cool sculpting.

I just had my first procedure done today on my lower abs and I go in tomorrow for upper abdominal. As you said it feels numb but not painful if you have very little pain tolerance you will be completely fine. All your pictures are so accurate. It looks so gross when machine first comes off. The average price here on the east coast in north Carolina is $1,250.00 per are and $750.00 for each side of the flank so that would be $1,500.00 for each side.

Very confident in my doctor seem. To have a lot of knowledge in the procedure. To t he lady above I am so sorry that you had deal with such horror in the doctor, I would defiantly report because the doctor is giving a bad image of the company….
    Again, great post shirleen.

  39. Shirleen says:

    Hi Mommy of three,

Thanks for the info, you are most welcome. :-)

  40. Wow! I love this detailed review of coolsculpting, I hope everyone knows that although it will literally freeze your fats safely & quickly, you just can’t rely on that alone to give you a great body. Exercise & a good diet will always help. Will definitely share this with others who are hesitant to try coolsculpting out!

  41. jennifer says:

Hi… I just did coolsculpting on 3 areas of my body last week… i was told it would be 40% of my fat on my belly & love handles… is this true… i only notice other reviews that it is 20%. Also i’m a little flabby i feel in skin tone… will this make the skin hang once the fat is gone?
    thanks…

  42. Elizabeth says:

I had coolsclupting two months ago after losing a considerable amount of weight and not being able to make my arms or waist any smaller no matter how hard I worked out. The treatment worked brilliantly – I visited Tracey Bell in Liverpool and they offer Fire and Ice packages so offer laser as well as Zeltiq as a package – In answer to Rachel I particularly hated my ‘bingo wings’ and I’d already tried lipsosound and targeted the area in the gym. The Coolsclupting finally shifted the weight on my arms and i can now begin to see definition in my upper arm area. My ‘love handles’ have also gone. I’m going to concentrate on my legs next as i’ve always wanted a gap inbetween my upper legs when I stand with my legs together. I’d highly recommend this to anybody and I even worked on my laptop and phone throughout both treatments so could justify having a pamper later. Brilliant.

  43. Laura says:

After my third child it was more than visible that my post-pregnancy paunch was not going to spring back into a lovely taut, washboard stomach. I’ve faffed about with diets and exercise and though I have managed to maintain a svelte physique, I needed a little helping hand with those stubborn little fatty pockets that just wouldn’t budge!

I live in Liverpool and after researching drastic procedures such as liposuction, I discovered Coolsculpting by Zeltiq and it has changed my life. I had the procedure with Tracey Bell on Hanover Street. The clinic was gorgeous an I was up and running in no down time at all.

I have had three sessions of the Coolsculpting over the past year and the Tracey Bell clinic also combine the treatment with radio frequency to tighten the skin with their ‘Ice&Fire’ package. So nice I’m sleek as well as slim- NO MORE CELLULITE!!!

Have a look at their website, they do EVERYTHING — I’m now looking ongoing on their slimscription programme to reach my ideal weight and I am considering a little botox so I can be the ultimate yummy mummy! http://www.traceybell.co.uk

  44. sara says:

hi sheerlin my tommy is like urs and i want to have a flat tommy which im kinda scared from doing liposuction .. i dont know which one to do to have the update pictures like urs .. my tommy is not big but not having flat tommy bothers me alot cuz i can not wear a bikini because im afraid someone say something or make fun of me or offend me you know ? so any suggestion .. do u think i should go through cool sculpting or lipo ? i also heard so many people die from liposuction so i dont know if thats a best option .. please send me an email or help me out because im so torn and i dont want to waste my money on something that doesnt work :(

  45. Shirleen says:

    Hi Sara,

I will definitely opt for cool sculpting cos I have fear of anything invasive. The potential risk is too high and I do not want to risk it unless otherwise there is no better option to it such as my recent eyebag surgery.

Do not expect you will get the permanent result with cool sculpting. You will still need to maintain your flat tummy with proper diet and exercise or else your bulge may reoccur again.

  46. Anne says:

Hi Shirleen, are the results lasting in your case? Also have you done anything other than your usual routine after your treatment to lose the 2.5kg?

  47. Shirleen says:

    Hi Anne,

I have only done it on my tummy area. I have been gaining and losing weight rapidly so I can’t tell if the result is lasting. So far my tummy is pretty flat although I have gained some weight since the last treatment.

  48. sara says:

Hi Shirleen thanks for the reply ..
umm i just want to say i will definitely get coolsculpthing done this year and i think eating clean and excercise would help alot .. because i used to going to gym 4-5 days a week and i lost 8 pounds but all i wanted to look good in bikini and with this cool procedure i might get what i always wanted .. but my question is that what if i get it and do work out and eat clean but nothing happens .. who should i complian to ? can u help

  49. Shirleen says:

    Hi Sara,

What I understand is that everyone has specific amount of fats situated in different parts of our body. Although Cool Sculpting can reduce a 20% of fat in the treated area in one treatment, however, if you desire to have a better result, you may need to consult your doctor for more advise.

  50. Olivia Davis says:

I am scheduled for this procedure in 2 weeks but I have a question. I keep reading that “body will eliminate the dead fat cells”. Does that mean more time in the bathroom or what exactly? I’d like to know what to expect. Thanks in advance!

  51. Shirleen says:

    Hi Olivia,

So sorry, I’m not able to answer your question as I do not understand the connection between the elimination of dead fat cells and the amount of time spent in the bathroom.

  52. Olivia Davis says:

How does your body “eliminate” the dead cells- through bowel movements?

  53. Shirleen says:

    Hi Olivia,

I think so. As mentioned above “the crystallized fat cells break down and they are naturally flushed from your body.”

  54. sara says:

I wanna say you look great my dear :) best of luck to you

  55. Pockmarkfats says:

    Hi

I recently did the Coolsculpting treatment on my lower belly as well!

They used the largest suction cup and it was pretty gross to see how much fats got sucked into the machine!

I’m on day 2 of my recovery. There is no coloured bruising on the area, but it seems to be a bit swollen. One thing I am worried about is that it feels painful, like a bruising, when I touch it. As I move along from the lower belly up to just below the belly button, it gets more painful to the touch. Is this normal???? I was told to massage the area, but it is so painful that I do it very very gently!

    Hope you can help!

    Thanks. :)

Got something to say? Go for it!
