Invasive Treatment Review - Surgical Eye Bag Removal By Dr Woffles Wu - PART 1
.
There are many eye creams in the cosmetic market that claim to reduce or eliminate eye bags but the truth is, these products are not able to do that little magic. Truly, the only way to remove bags is to surgically remove them.
I first noticing my right eye bag in my 20s. As I grow older, the eye bag seems to grow bigger and more noticeable. The bags make me look 5 years older than I should.
I have experimented different ways of removing them. First I pampered myself with the eye firming therapy but see no result at all. I followed up with Titan and Thermage, thinking they can help to tighten the areas but failed. Then I do lymph massage to drain out the fluid from under my eye but failed too. I even tried having filler injections to plump up the skin and it failed badly too.
Well, after consulting many doctors, the best and only way to solve my problem is to surgically remove the solid fat pad.

.
Dr Woffles Wu was my first and only Plastic Surgeon I have consulted. After my first consultation with him (S$150+GST), I was even more assure that he is the right doctor to perform this important task for me. Instead of cutting the skin on the eyelid area like what most doctors do, Dr Wu will cut from the inner eyelid which leaves no scar at all.
Dr Woffles Wu is a reputable and well-known Plastic Surgeon in Singapore. There are many reports of him fixing problems for patients that have their makeovers done by other doctors that have gone terribly wrong.
Although he is extremely expensive (S$6192.80 - including GST, injections & medications), as the eye areas are very delicate, I do not want to risk myself just because I can save money. I’m not willing to take this risk at all cost.
.
Day 1
Before the procedure, I was asked to take a set of medications and they comprise of 2x antibiotics pills, 3x bruising and swelling reduction tablets, 2x anti-inflammation and 1x strong pain killer. I need to repeat the same set of medications for the next seven days. I was also given some sleeping pills just in case I can’t sleep at night. There are two types of Eye Drops to be applied. I will need to apply 2 drops of each Eye Drop every hour on the first day and every two-hour from day two onwards.

.
It was a busy day at the clinic and I have to wait for 2 hours before my turn. I was feeling calm all the while and I only start to get nervous when Dr Wu said ‘I’m going to give you injections now!’. I hate needles since young, I’m always afraid of injection! I was given 3-4 anesthetic injections on each eye. It was really torturing! Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Stop! Enough!
Immediately after the injections, the eye areas were numb and swollen. First Dr Wu requested me to open my eyes and look over his shoulder. As my eyes were badly swollen, I find it hard to even open one eye at a time. He has to keep on saying ‘Open your eye please!’ and I have to tell him that that is the biggest I can go! I have to take a deep breath and try opening my eye again. Beng san! He then make a long cut on the inner eyelid (OMG!!!) and do the suction from there. After the suction was done, he then stitched the skin up with special thread that will dissolve onto the skin. So there is no stitches to be removed at all. I felt fainty when Dr Wu was doing the stitching with my eye opened and thread touching my face. My bottom half of my body was shivering non-stop. I couldn’t calm myself down. I almost wanted to tell the doctor to put me to sleep instead. Goodness! I was balling my fists the whole 45 minutes procedure. It seems like three hours to me! After both eyes were done, the nurse pasted the waterproof bandages below my eye areas. FINALLY IS OVER!!!
I was instructed not to have any water contact on my eye areas. I can only wash my forehead and the cheek areas. After the whole surgery treatment, the nurse made a loud remark : ‘Wah! Your right eye is so bruised and swollen!’ My heart sank after hearing that. She asked if I wanted to look at the mirror and I quickly declined it. After the whole treatment, I felt so daze and my vision was really bad. To think of it, I was quite brave to go for the treatment alone without any companion.
After I reached home, I avoided going anywhere near a mirror as I was afraid and was not ready to face myself in front of the mirror. I even switched off the toilet light whenever I visit it. My eyes were so swollen that I could barely open my eyes properly. I couldn’t even watch TV programme or surf net. With my eyes half opened most of the time, I felt sleepy and decided to have an early night then. Even though Dr Wu has prescripted me with strong pain killer and sleeping pill but thankfully I do not need to take any at all. There was no pain and I get to sleep soundly that night.
.
Day 2
Still felt dizzy and lost. Still having difficulty of opening my eyes properly. I have to apply 2 types of eye drop every 2 hours. I have hard time washing my hair as I tried very hard not to get my eyes wet. For the first time after the surgery, I took the courage to look at myself in front of the mirror. I almost fainted on what I saw in front of me. OMG!!! I couldn’t recognise myself, WAS THAT ME?! Or was that an alien?? With swollen face and bandages around, I felt like a contestant for the ‘Extreme Makeover’! I have bloodshot eye on my left eye. I was so worried and decided to make a visit to the doctor on the following day.
.
Day 3
I went to Dr Wu’s clinic in the morning. After examining my eyes, he claimed that the bloodshot eye is due to bruising and it will be subsided soon. I was supposed to have the bandages remove on the third day today. But after analyzing, Dr Wu realized that my eyes were still badly swollen and bruised, he suggested that I should leave them on to help speed up the swelling and only remove them on the next day.
After the eye bags were surgically removed, there are more fine lines appearing on my lower eye areas. The fine lines were really bad! So Dr Wu prescript 4 types of eye products - 2 serums and 2 eye creams, each for day and night use. The total costs for 4 products are $800 (Day 1 @$130, Day 2 @$80, Night 1 @$260 & Night 2 @$330). Heart pain to spend so much money…. Well, I have only myself to blame!

.
Day 4
I managed to remove the bandages and I was very shocked to see how bad and dark the bruising on my right eye was! Luckily, the bruising and swelling on the left eye was not so obvious. I can now open my eyes properly. I start to stand closer to the mirror and check on the stitches. I was shocked to find NO STITCHING OR CUTTING MARK at all! That is really amazing! Other than the bruising and swelling, the lower eye areas look intact without any scar mark at all.
.
Day 5
Back to work. Didn’t have a good coverage with BB cream for my bruising in the morning. I have to camouflage the severe bruising and red eye by putting on my glasses. During my lunch break, I rushed down to Sephora to buy a Benefit concealer (Erase Paste) which is pretty good. It helps to cover up the swelling and bruising well.
.

.
Day 7
Bruising is still very obvious but fortunately I have my saviors to help conceal the bruising. My swelling is almost 60% gone. My bloodshot eye is still very obvious. My vision was slightly blurred. The lower eyelid muscle is stiff and I can’t look down.

Now you see it and now you don’t!

.
Day 9
The swelling on my left eye is almost recovered. My left eye vision is back to normal but my right eye is still slightly blurred. The centre part of the bottom left eye area seems to sunken in. Feel miserable about it.
.
Day 14
The swelling on my right eye is almost gone and the bruising has subsided a lot. The dark eye circles became more obvious and extremely dark. The dark eye circles make me look tired and sick. My vision has improved and the muscle on my lower eyelid is back to normal. The four eye products (that Dr Wu has prescripted earlier) has significantly reduced the severe fine lines on my lower eyelid areas. THEY WORK!!!

.
Day 18
I went to Dr Wu’s clinic today for a review. I bought up my concerns of the severe dark eye circles and sunken area (centre of my left lower eyelid). He claimed that the dark areas are due to blood stasis (staining) from the operation. These darkness will be disappeared in a couple of weeks. The sunken area is formed because the areas above (right below my eyelid) and below the sunken area are swollen. When the swellings are gone, the sunken area will disappear too. (Cross my fingers!) I will have to give Dr Wu the benefit of a doubt.

.
Doctor again prescripts another special eye cream EUOKO which costs $500! This Prada eye cream is claimed to contain Oligopeptide, a hormone ingredient, that can help to remove fine lines, dynamic wrinkles, puffiness and tone irregularities for the eye contour. I’m now so afraid to meet the doctor again, there is always something he will want me to buy whenever I see him. Hee hee………

.
Overall, other than the dark circles, sunken area and mini eye bags (right below the eyelid, may be due to swelling), I’m quite happy with the result. So far so good!
.

I will be seeing Dr Wu again on 24 July and I will be doing a final review on this invasive treatment soon after. Stay tuned!

Lower Eyelid Surgery
June 30th, 2010 at 5:44 pm
Lower eyelid surgery is often the long-awaited solution for those who believe that looking older is not welcome in most people’s social lives. If you are “starting over” or getting back into the dating scene, it’s common to become extra self-conscious about your looks and the age-related changes you see. Major life events such as weddings may motivate you to seek lower eyelid surgery to finally have the appearance you see in your mind’s eye be reflected in your mirror.

Hi Shirleen,
Before I rattle on, let me say that it is very brave of you to go though the surgery and sharing all the details with us. Your first hand information was far more helpful and believable from any doctors during consultations. Thank you!
I hope you are doing well and I hope there are no more signs of bruises and eyebags on you by now. Do you have any new close-up photos to share? I’ve been contemplating over this similar surgery for myself, and what’s stopping me is I’m not fully convinced that the bags and dark circles will really be gone. If it is really that effective, I don’t mind going through all the costs and the pain like you did. Just need some final assurance for that step, would you help with pictures and updates?

HI Kristyn,
The bruises and bags are gone. I will be doing a final review soon and I will be able to share the pictures by then. Dr Wu did a great job and I hope to have a clearer result in 2 more months time.

You are extremely brave to let him do your eyes. Woffles has a terrible reputation and he has ruined my face so bad I have to go to another doctor to do rescue job. I have aged at least 10 years after seeing him and spent almost 20k.
He doesn’t care about your well being,he is very arrogant and he thinks he is god and the ONLY great plastic surgeon around town. I absolutely despise his lack of working ethic.

Hi Gorgondola,
Oh dear! It is real bad that he has done a bad job on you. Yes he can be a little insensitive at times. In fact, I’m quite surprised to receive a bad review on him. It is usually he’s the one who will rescue bad job done instead the other way round.
Btw, just curious is he aware that he has done a bad job on you? If yes, what is his response?

Hi Gorgondola,
I can agree with you more about how arrogant and mercenary the man is!!! I consulted him once and was pissed at how he tried to rip me. No ‘THANK YOU VERY MUCH’” Dr Woffles Wu….there are many competents surgeons around~~
