Review – Simple Soothing Facial Toner

SIMPLE is an inexpensive, ordinary no-frill UK based skincare brand. For the past 10 years, it has gained my trust all thanks to one of their popular product ‘Simple Refreshing Facial Wash Gel’. Till now, it is still one of my ‘must-have’ essential daily skincare product. Well, that is why I didn’t have much consideration when I first purchased Simple Soothing Facial Toner.

This toner is relatively cheap @S$7.50, considering it as an United Kingdom-based skincare line. It is such a huge different in price if you compare it with the big brands at departmental stores.

Simple Soothing Facial Toner is claimed to contain NO PERFUME, NO COLOUR and NO ALCOHOL. And it is also claimed suitable for people with sensitive skin like me.

Product claims

Remove the last traces of make-up and cleanser with our Kind to Skin Soothing Facial Toner to clarify and refresh your skin.

Simple Soothing Facial Toner contains mainly water, humectant, thickening agent and preservatives. Sorbitol and propylene glycol are humectant agents found in this toner. Sodium PCA is a natural component of skin that is a very good water moisturizing factor. Allantoin is an effective anti-irritant.

The preservatives found in Simple Soothing Facial Toner are methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, potassium sorbate, phenoxyethanol, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1 and 3-diol. But sadly some preservatives may not be suitable for sensitive skin.

Simple Soothing Facial Toner also contain hamamelis virginiana distillate, also known as witch hazel. It is a potent antioxidant but is claimed to contain 15% ethanol (alcohol). Alcohol can be irritating when used repeatedly on skin. But thankfully, the content is miniscule so it is unlikely to cause irritation for most people. Another of its key miniscule antioxidant ingredient is chamomilla recutita extract.

Simple Soothing Facial Toner is a very basic toner and is claimed to be suitable for sensitive skin. Not a fantastic toner for sensitive skin after all. Although it is claimed to be 100% ALCOHOL-FREE but sadly it contains witch hazel that has at least 15% alcohol in it. And moreover, it contains plentiful of preservatives which some may irritate skin. That really puzzle me on why are there so many preservative ingredients in it??!! Goodness!!

I also find that Simple Soothing Facial Toner is not moisturizing enough. Probably insufficient of humectant and emollient ingredients in it.

Occasionally, I do experience mild irritation after application. In fact, Simple Soothing Facial Toner acts as a second-step cleanser for my night cleansing process. After makeup cleanser and facial wash, I will use the toner to help remove the dirt and makeup that the cleanser missed.

Will I buy it again? Don’t think so!
