Review - SK-II Facial Treatment Essence

..

For the longest time, I have always wanted to try SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. I have been receiving good reviews on how wonderful this ‘Pitera’ product is. But I was a bit skeptical and hence choose to hold back due to a ’stupid’ myth I’ve heard from different friends since many years ago.

“It is a miracle product that can help you to achieve a crystal clear skin BUT if you start using it, you can’t stop. You need to keep on using it and if you don’t, your skin will start to get even worse than what it was before.” Hahaha!!! Stupid right?!

Ironically, before I even start using SK-II product, a few of my friends and colleagues who admire my skin, will all ask if I’m using SK-II. It is amazing to see people perceive SK-II as a ‘miracle’ skincare for good-looking skin.

..

Product Claims

Skin Balancing Essence. Women everywhere are so passionate about Facial Treatment Essence that they describe it as their ‘miracle water’. Pitera, the seemingly magical ingredient found in all SK-II products, helps restore vital balance by promoting the skin’s natural 28-day surface renewal process. This single blend of vitamins, amino acids, minerals and organic acids produces a seemingly miraculous rebirth of appearance. With over 90% pure Pitera, Facial Treatment Essence is the ‘heart’ of every SK-II Skincare ritual. Rely on it daly to moisturise, balance and renew. Skin absorbs the benefits almost on contact. The result is supple, smooth, radiant skin.

..

Ingredients

Basically, there are only total of seven ingredients in SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. And they are mainly Pitera, humectant agents, water and some preservatives. What a simple ingredient list! Facial Treatment Essence is claimed to contain the most concentrated amount of Pitera (90%) of all the SK-II skincare products. Well not too sure if it is true but I will give SK-II a benefit of the doubt on its concentration.

Pitera is claimed to be rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, organic acids and other natural ingredients beneficial to the skin.

..

Reviews

Pitera, a naturally-occurring liquid from the yeast fementation process, is discovered by scientists when they noticed the elderly workers working at a sake brewery in Japan had wrinkled faces, but extraordinarily soft and youthful hands. SK-II claims that this is a miracle ingredient that has helped many celebrities and beautiful women around the Asia and the world to achieve crystal clear skin.

SK-II believes that long-term SK-II users have clearer and more translucent skin than non SK-II users. With this strong believe, that is why so many SK-II consumers have been faithfully using it for many years. Not too surprised that is how the myth came about.”Your skin will get even more worse than it was before if you stop using SK-II Facial Treatment Essence.” So I challenged the claim/myth and decided not to continue using SK-II Facial Treatment Essence after finishing one bottle. The result : My skin doesn’t get worse at all! :-)

I have tried two different ways of using SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. On the first month - I warm up my palms by rubbing both hands, then I pour the essence on my palms and gently pat on my face (demonstrated by Qi Qi on the advertisement). After a month later - I decided to use a cotton pad instead of my hands. First I rub my skin with the cotton pad that is soaked with essence (just like a toner) and then I turn the pad around and gentle pat my skin with the cotton pad. I prefer the second method as I feel it is a better way for my skin to receive nutrients.

Many of us may consider Facial Treatment Essence as a lotion (due to its dilute liquid) but actually it is a serum.

After 2 months of usage, my skin is superficially hydrated and tone. Thankfully, this ‘miracle water’ doesn’t cause any irritation to my sensitive skin. My skin also feels fresh and clean, I guess partly because I have applied essence with the cotton pad. In this way, it not only helps to penetrate the nutrients onto my skin but also helps to remove the dirt and residue from the skin.

Will I buy it again? Yes definitely!

Does this really market as “your skin gets worse if you stop using”? Also what are the preservatives in this? Awesome review btw albeit my comment may have come a lil’ late since I chanced upon your sweet blog.

Hi Lulu,

Thanks for dropping by and I’m glad you like this review. :-)

It has been marketed as the longer you use the better your skin is, so I believe this is where the myth (skin gets worse after stop using) came about. The preservatives are sodium benzoate and methylparaben.

Thinking of trying SK II but not sure where to start as it is quite pricey. Which would be the recommended product of SK II to try? Do they have products for body as well?

Hi Belle,

For your first SK-II, you can start with their signature product which is SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. It contains the highest concentration of Pitera. I believe you will like it. The rest you can try later.

I’m not too sure on their body products. I guess you can opt for a cheaper body products from the convenient stores. There are as equally good as the premium brands and cheaper too.

I think there should be concern about the preservative used in SKII, which belongs to a class of chemicals called “parabens”.
Research has shown long term exposure is detrimental to health. It is an endocrine disrupted as it’s molecular structure closely resembles that of the body’s hormones. The is quite plentiful info on the internet on parabens.

This was just the type of review that I have been searching for…thank you!!
I am thinking of purchasing the Facial treatment essence, but I am wondering if I will still need to use my usual moisturiser on top of it before applying my make up? If you know that answer to this it would be greatly appreciated :))
Kindest regards.

Hi Jodz,

Facial Treatment Essence acts as a serum hence you will need to top up with moisturizer before usual your makeup. :-)

Dear Shirleen,

I really love your blog, and have already set it in my favorite web page.

I am 35 years old, and working in a professional field. Being stressed out at work ocassionally makes it shown in my face. I do not have wrinkles, but my face always look tired and not to mention, older than my age! I am seriously considering of taking SK2 FTE, after reading few reviews that it can help to overcome the old and tired face. Do u think it is worth it? Thank you for your advice. Best regards.

Hi Dahlia,

To answer your question if this SKII FTE is worth a try, well I reckon it depends greatly on your own skin condition.

A friend of mine with pretty good skin condition has recently tested SKII FTE and after using it, her skin turned radiance and flawless. She really loved the result. But…..2 weeks after she has completed the whole bottle, red bumps started to appear on her face. It took her a few weeks to recover.

And for me, thankfully I did not have any skin irritation after using the whole bottle. But anyway, I didn’t get to see much result unlike her.

If you dare to take the risk, you may want to give it a try.

hi Sharleen,

i’ve just bought FTE..but still not using it..i haven’t even removed the packaging off the bottle yet!
why??here’s my story

i’m so excited to try it..but hold it back when i read some reviews in the internet saying that they had bad experiences with this product.
also, my bf told me about her friend’s experience, whom WAS an SK2 user.
it DID wonders to her face but when she stops using it, pimples (big ones!)are growing on her face and it scares me out. (hell!)
i found out about these only after i bought it.well, it was my mistake.i should have search the information and reviews on this product earlier, b4 i buy it.
now, i’m afraid, really afraid to use this product, thinking that this product might not be suitable for my skin.
i would like to give it a try, but afraid that i might regret it later..
help me! =(

Hi Amy,

You may want to do a skin patch test with FTE behind your ear or on the inside of your forearm for a few days. If possible for the first day or 2, allow the product to sit on the skin for 24 hours. Avoid taking a shower within the 24 hour period, since you don’t want to wash off the product.

After a few days, if there is no irritation, breakout or whatsoever, then this product is safe to use.

Hi Shuxian,

You may want to check out some local drug stores above Hawker Centre (level 3) beside People’s Park Complex and OG. If not you can also check out some SaSa stores, I think they sell trial samples too.

Hi Ainn Maya,

Sorry I’m not able to understand the malay words. I guess you should stop the product and let the pimple heals before it get worse. I’m not too sure if it contains any ingredient that may irritate your skin.

Shirleen

Hi Shawa,

Use it after toner and before moisturizer. I guess you need to use a while before seeing result. The result may not be obvious, your skin may probably be more taut, hydrate and brighter. I believe the result varies from individual.

Hi Shirleen,

what is the recommended age to try SKII FTE? I have tried FTE trial bottle when I was 21 but there was not much of effect to my skin and in fact there were some pimples appearing the first few days when I applied but it diminished after a few weeks. I have the urge to try it again after reading your post. I am 23 now is it advisable?

Shirleen

March 12th, 2011 at 4:58 pm

avatar

Hi Lovelle,

I believe 23 should be a right time to start using SKII FTE but my only concern is the pimples you have mentioned that appeared on the first few days. I wonder if the cause is due to the product.

You probably have to pour a little more of FTE on the cotton pad (at least 80% soaked). And if the cotton pad is too drying, the effect may not be significant.

Hi Shirleen,

I heard from my friend that the tiny pimples are due to the skin trying to get use to the essence. So if you continue to use it the pimples will slowly disappear. I am too sure how true it is or maybe the pitera content is rather high for my skin. I am rather afraid to start using it now again. How about the new cellumination essence? is it safer to try?

Shirleen

March 16th, 2011 at 12:19 am

avatar

Hi Lovelle,

I haven’t try cellumination essence before and this product is slightly different from FTE. Cellumination Essence is actually a hydrating serum that contains concentrated pitera whilst FTE contains the highest concentrated pitera (90%).

Since cellumination essence contains lower concentration of pitera as compare to FTE, I believe it maybe safer to try this product.

Hi Shirleen,

I just found ur blog and really love it!! Just wondering between SKII FTE and Kose Medicated Sekkisei lotion, which one do you like better? I’m turning 26 this year and looking for product to help hydrate and heal the scarring.
Thank you =)

Hi Desi,

I have not tried Kose Medicated Sekkisei Lotion before. Both SKII FTE and Kose lotion are ideal for hydration purpose. But both do not heal scarring unfortunately.

I personally prefer SKII FTE (probably because I’ve tried it before) as I’m afraid Kose Lotion may not be suitable for ultra sensitive skin like mine. (information taken after googled it)

dear Shirleen, I have used the FTE for about a month now, and have just added Facial Clear Solution to my range of product. I did notice that my face got clearer, however, I still encounter some clogged pores on my cheek and forehead. I had clogged pores prior to this, just wondering if pitera is able to help me? or probably the product does not suit me?

Shirleen

April 2nd, 2011 at 7:45 pm

Hi Adeline,

In my opinion, I doubt Pitera can help to tackle enlarged pores. You may properly see very superficial result and it may not be obvious. Many who have used FTE, reviewed that their skin are more translucent and clearer. I can’t comment if FTE is suitable for you but as long as there is no irritation / red bumps occurred, I believe it is safe to use.

Hi Myo,

Have you seen a doctor for your acne? I’m wondering if your acne is due to skin hydration.

Lack of moisture > skin sensitivity > inflammation > acne

I’m not too sure if FTE will cause acne to your skin but if you can, try to obtain a trial sampling before purchasing a full size.

Btw, how long have you been using Body Shop Tea Tree products? This range is really bad for the skin, They contain high concentration of alcohol which will dry up your skin in a long run. Alcohol will also increase free radicals production and is bad bad bad.

Hi Shirleen,

I like your review on SK2 FTE. I have been using it since Dec 2009 and I found my skin is clearer and moist. Seems like my skin adjusts itself to weather. I used to have pimples problem back when I was 18 and felt skin care products are great challenge to choose. Fortunately with FTE, my skin needs only not-too-expensive moisturiser on top of FTE

Hi Shirleen.

Thanks a lot for your reviews..i found them very helpful. I also have been using SK II FTE for 1 month now together with SK II cellumination deep surge cream..so far, they do what they promise.. my skin feels more balanced, smooth & glowy. (as long as they don’t break me..gonna use these products for long..long time!)

Here i just would like to ask for your opinion..while using SK II FTE..do you feel necessary to add additional anti-oxidant? I read & hear from dermatologist, Dr. Schultz at DermTV.com that antioxidant is one of the 3 essential daily skin regime. So far i don’t read that SK II FTE has any antioxidant properties..

If yes, could you please suggest products u think suitable to go with SK II FTE & cellumination deep surge cream.

Sorry for the long comment. Thanks!

Shirleen

April 20th, 2011 at 11:44 pm

Hi Ekay,

Pitera doesn’t consider as antioxidant hence you can add an antioxidant serum into your regimen. You may wanna use SKII FTE first before using other serums such as antioxidant.

Yes antioxidant is very important and essential as it will combat free radicals that have assaulted your skin in the day. I’m presently using the Paula’s Choice Antioxidant Serum, pretty good though. You can also check out the Elizabeth Arden Prevage Serum. It contains idebenone which is claimed as a powerful antioxidant.

Hi Shirleen,

I have been using the FT Clear Lotion, the FTE and I received a sample of the Skin Refinement and Skin Signature Cream. I am also using the new Facial Treatment Cream Foundation and Loose Powder. I have been amazed at the results. I suffer from chronic acne and rosacea. At the age of 39, my skin was always blotchy, clogged and though I would have shine on my nose, I would have dry flaky skin. In one month, it’s like I have been given the skin I only dreamed of.
Curious, what is your opinion on a good face serum to use? I have two large sunspots on my cheek and I want to fade them. Also, as SK-II practically breaks my bank, could you suggest a moisturizer similar to the Signature Cream without the $205 price tag?

Shirleen

April 25th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

avatar

Hi Sarah,

For good face serum, I will recommend SkinCeuticals. They carry pretty good antioxidant serums with different formulations. Or Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair is good too. Both SkinCeuticals & Estee are quite expensive though.

For sunspots, you may wanna check out the new Lancome Blanc Expert Melanolyser.

For moisturizer, Clarins Whitening Night Cream (S$110) is good too. I believe it’s great for your sunspots. But this product is only meant for night use. For affordable day & night use, L’oreal Youth Code is quite okie although it’s not the best.

Hi Shirleen,

I have been using SK II FTE for 1 week now and the problem is that I start to get some pimples on my cheeks. The way I use it, I will wet the cotton with FTE and tap it on my face. I also leave the cotton on my cheeks as advised from the website.

Not sure if these pimples are because my skin is adapting to FTE.. saw some comments from other users as well..

What do you recommend… :( Thanks dear.

Shirleen

May 24th, 2011 at 10:07 pm

avatar

Hi June,

I’m not too sure if the pimples are caused by you leaving the cotton pad on the cheek areas.

For the meantime, let the pimples heal completely before using the FTE again. I wouldn’t advise you to leave the cotton pad on the cheek again. If the pimples ever come back again next round, I reckon the product may not be suitable for you.

Btw, I’m not too sure if any of the skincare products (other than SK II FTE) may likely be the culprit for the pimples too.

I’m only about 21 but interested to use FTE. Is it advisable to start this young? Also do you happen to know of any good sunblock that provides good coverage? Currently I’m using Avene emulsion. But have plans of using Clarins sunblock.

Hi Stella,

I believe it’s alright to start using FTE at 21 and I’m glad you are aware of the importance of taking good care of your skin at a very young age.

For sunblock, I’m currently using Clarins tinted and Kiehl’s sunblocks, switching both on alternate days. Both are equally good and lightweight. Clarins has a nice light natural flowery scent and Kiehl’s seems odorless.

Hi Jennifer,

Other than itchiness, do you encounter any redness on your skin? I’m not too sure what’s the cause of the itchiness but I reckon it may either due to your skin adapting to the new product or suffering from skin dryness. I may be wrong.

If there is not redness occur, you may want to use it for another week and if the itchiness continues, stop it completely. Procced to any of the SKII counters for solution.

Hi Lydia,

I don’t think SKII Facial Treatment Essence can help to treat your dry and itchy skin as of now. What you need most is a gentle moisturizer to rebuild your skin metabolism and moisture. You may want to check out Cetaphil Daily Advance Ultra Hydrating Lotion. This product is suitable for your dehydrated sensitive skin.

I have a second question :I’am 21 and I have acne is it ok if I use this product?

Hi guys,

I tested the FTE on my arm and was not allergic to it. But when I used the FTE I had a few large red painful pimples on my eyebrows. Maybe its due to some form of purging? I still continued and it died out. From there I had no more problems with it. And its okay now. Skin looks better.

Actually you can go to SK counters and ask them for a free sample. They’ll provide you with these 10ml bottles which is good enough for about 4 applications :)

I bought the FTmask first before my FTE cause the counter lady said tho its less in concentration but its like 10FTE applications. And I swear on the masks. Its the mask to use before a big impt date or occasion. Swear by the mask :) get it from airport. Its half the price.

I was just searching google to find the cheapest way to buy SK-II FTE,when i came across this site. I have been using the product on and off for over 3 years and i love it, so much so that i call it “My Gold”. I place the Essence into a small spray pump and lightly spray my face, neck and décolleté twice a day after cleansing. I also apply more frequently if i am tired or dehydrated, it is the one of the best products i have purchased. I dont buy cheap beauty products but i am also not a slave to brands, most topical skin care products do not penetrate deep enough to work in the way their manufacturers claim they will. For years i have used a good cleanser and moisteriser, combined with products that include concentrated vitamin C or fruit acids(alpha…, serums etc). I apply minimum 15+ sunscreen EVERYDAY, to my face, neck,décolleté
and the backs of my hands. I feel sorry for the people who have experienced adverse affects from this amazing product, but perhaps they have skin that is adverse to the humectant agents? Unfortunately I have not used the Essence continually as there has been times when i haven’t been able to afford to replace it, although i do have a friend who has generously bought me a few 250ml bottles from Singapore Airport. I would gladly purchase 10 bottles at a time if i could find the 250ml bottles for near to $100 AUS. Any suggestions anyone?

I use cleanser, toner, sunblock and then moisturizer every morning. When should I put SK II? Before sunblock?

Hi Ela,

I think your regimen is incorrect, the sunscreen should be the last product after moisturizer.

Cleanser > Toner > SKII > Moisturizer > Sunscreen

Hi Shirleen,
How much do you buy the 250ml SKII FTE in Changi Airport?
I heard that this is the largest packaging and only available in the airport… Am I correct?

Hi Hazel,

In fact, a couple of my friends and readers also suffer from breakouts when they stop using FTE too…..

Am so curious to know what’s the cause of it….

Hi Shirleen

I just read ur blog and i love it..im SK-II user and been using cellumination series, but i didn’t see brightening effects, it just smoothes my skin and made a glowy effect. Are u using the whole skin care such as moisturizer from SK-II? im thinking to switch my skin care to shiseido white lucent, but keep the FTE as a routine regime. Is it ok if i tandemed with it? thank u..

Hi Felicia,

I’m glad you like my blog. :-)

In fact, the key benefit for cellumination series is hydration. I have received inconsistent benefit versions from different counter promoters. Some claimed it mainly has hydration benefit whilst others claimed it has brightening and radiance effects.

I’m not using the complete regimen products from SK-II. I love mixing different brands and have been doing that for the longest time. It’s definitely alright to mix Shiseido White Lucent and FTE for your regimen.

Hi Sherleen,

Love ur blog. It seems you know heaps on SKII products.

I got travel exclusive pitera deluxe set which contains the FTE and and FT clear lotion. And I am new to SK-II

Do you think its beneficial to use both products as both contains the same active ingredients, although FTE is more concentrated.

Which one should be used first?
Thanks

Hi Ivanna,

FT Clear Lotion is claimed to contain AHA that helps to exfoliate the dead skin cells hence you need to use this before FTE.

Although both contains similar key ingredient Pitera but they are formulated with other different ingredients that provide different skin benefits.

I just started to use SKII this Sept and it has been almost 3 months by now. The biggest factor for me when considering trying out SKII FTE is its hydrating effect. I have quite dehydrated skin and open pores, so I thought of give it a try and bought the Pitera Starter Kit (FTE & clear lotion). I start to have breakout ever since then til now. I’m not sure which is the cause - clear lotion or FTE. I have never use anything rich before this and I have been using biotherm all the while. Can you share with me your opinion and how should I tackle this problem? Thanks.

Hi Saoirse,

In fact, you are not the first reader who has encountered breakout from FTE. That really puzzle me on what is the ingredient that cause the breakout.

I wonder if it is the yeast (Pitera) that produces yeast allergy or irritation through contact with the skin?

You may want to use each product on alternate week in order to find out which is the product that cause irritation.

Thanks for maintaining this blog, and for the responsiveness to all the queries.

I however notice that you refrained from commenting on the use of para end (asked by Linn on 29Nov2010). There are strong apprehensions about usage of parabens being linked to cancer (it mimics estrogen which is known to play a role in development of breast cancer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraben
and lots of other websites). Parabens have been proven to cause harmful effects on the male reproductive systems too (as per information from open sources - feel free to look up on the Net)

Most respectable cosmetics companies are moving away from using Parabens in their different forms, and loudly proclaiming it on their messages and packaging. In the light of that, would you continue advocating these products, or would you rather advise on erring on the side of safety?

Hi Anu,

I knew about the safety issue regards to paraben many years back and I actually did some researches too.

I’m not bothered about parabens as most of the times these ingredients are usually listed at the bottom of the ingredient list hence the amounts are minuscule.

If parabens can cause harm to the body, I believe the health authority would have stopped importing all products that contain this group of ingredients.

Hi Shirleen, you think SKII FTE can help to reduce acne scar? and the red dots on my face? I have skin problems, but cant find a suitable products for my face

Shirleen

Hi Connie,

I don’t think so.

You may want to consult a dermatologist regards to the red dots. For acne scar, I’m not too sure if exfoliant such as AHA or BHA can help.

Hi Hongli,

No, FTE is an essence / serum, so you need a moisturizer after it.

I just recently bought myself a complete set of SK-II products - FT gentle cleanser, FT clear lotion toner, FT essence, skin signature moisturiser and mask. They ARE expensive but I have to say it’s doing wonders to my skin. I can instantly feel the different. My skin feels so smooth after the first usage! I find the signature cream to be a little rich but it really hydrates my skin. I hope this will get better. So far, I’m loving SK-II products :)

Hi I just started using SK II FTE for 2 months. I started to have rash on my face and neck, and I stop using it for a week until the rash on my face subside. The rash is still there but not so severe as the last time. But My skin texture is dry because of the rash. Should I continue using the product?

Shirleen

January 24th, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Hi Kathryn,

Not too sure if your skin is allergic to yeast (Pitera). If yes, that may be the reason for the rash. You may want to wait a little while more (probably a month or two) before using the FTE again. But if your skin still gets rashes after that, you might want to stop using it totally. You may be one of them who are allergic to yeast.

Hi Shirleen,

I just bought the FTE just now, and I also bought Estee Lauder Night Advanced Serum, I’ve been using Shiseido’s The Skincare Moisture Protection as my old moisturizer, Just a moiturizer alone, I coudn’t see any good result as my skin is still dry and dull. I’m 31, so I just decided that I should have a serum, that’s why I bought Estee Lauder’s Advanced Repair Serum, I did see some changes though, it makes my skin brighter just two days of using it, I haven’t started using the FTE just yet, Do you think it’s okay to use it with Estee Lauders’s Advanced Repair? I’m just finishing my Shiseido moisturizer then after that , I don’t know that moisturizer to buy that would compliment them, any suggestions? what moisturizer are using? Thanks!

Hi Kelly,

Yes you can use both FTE and ANR in the same regimen and use FTE before ANR. I’m presently using the Murad Hydro Dynamic Ultimate Moisture, it’s pretty good actually. You may want to check it out.
