[Review] DCS Nutriderm

If you are in your mid-20s and think that you are too early to for anti-aging products, think again.

According to the experts, our skin starts to age naturally by mid-20s. As dermal fibroblasts begin to age, they produce decreasing amounts of collagen and elastin which results in skin laxity and wrinkles.

Youthful, glowing skin needs to be maintained to prolong its youth thus it’s never too early to start incorporating anti-aging products as soon as we can.

From the brand that harness the volcanic power of Jeju, Korean skincare brand DCS (Dermatology Cosmeceutical Solution) has come out with its latest anti-aging range, NUTRIDERM, to help keep away fine lines and early signs of aging.

With rare Korean ginseng Berry as one of its ingredients, this NUTRIDERM range is not only gentle on the skin but also kind on the wallet. Prices range from $33.50 for a toner to $53 for an ampoule.

Rare Korean Ginseng Berry

The Korean ginseng berry can only be harvested once every four years over a seven-day period, giving rise to its rarity and value. Its powerful anti-aging properties make the Korean ginseng berry a prized ingredient in Korean skincare.

The secret to the Korean ginseng berry’s restorative power lies in its high concentration of ginsenosides. It contains twice the number of ginsenosides as compared to the more well-known and frequently used Korean ginseng root. Ginsenosides have excellent anti-oxidant properties which helps to protect the skin from daily environmental stress by fighting free radicals that cause skin aging.

Our skin develops wrinkles when it loses the elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid found within over time. On top of protecting our skin from the outside, the Korean ginseng berry increases the hyaluronic acid found in our skin cells, making our skin more plumped up and supple.

Volcanic Seawater

Other than the Korean ginseng berry, another key ingredient that gives skin its dewy nature is Jeju’s volcanic seawater. Just like all DCS product ranges, the anti-aging NUTRIDERM range is also infused with the pure, skin-loving water from Jeju Island in Korea. The volcanic seawater is highly-valued for its rare mineral content such as Selenium, Zinc and Iron, all of which are crucial to skin health because they help to repair and regenerate the skin from the external environmental stresses. The volcanic seawater has been highly purified of pathogens and heavy metals by passing through volcanic basalt rock for thousands of years.

We can now all be like one of those many Koreans women with beautiful and healthy mul-kwang-pi-bu (dewy, glowing) skin, with skincare products infused with nutrients-rich water, like in NURTIDERM.

Nature-Based Ingredients

On top of the Korean ginseng berry and Jeju’s volcanic water, NUTRIDERM products contain other nature-based ingredients such as marine collagen, licorice extract, vegetable worm mushroom extract and pomegranate extract. Hypoallergenic and gentle on the skin, nature-based ingredients provide your skin with the care it needs without stripping the skin’s natural moisture.

NUTRIDERM range consists of four products to incorporate into your daily regime: Ultra Nutrition Toner (S$33.50), Ultra Nutrition Ampoule (S$53), Ultra Nutrition Day Cream (S$41), and Ultra Nutrition Night Cream (S$41).

I had the opportunity to try out two of the four products in the NUTRIDERM range, namely Ultra Nutrition Ampoule and Nutrition Night Cream.

Read on for my review on how the products fare…

Ultra Nutrition Ampoule 30ml (S$53)

Key ingredients and benefits:

  • Volcanic Seawater – Rare mineral contents such as Selenium, Zinc and Iron, all of which are crucial to skin health because it repairs and regenerates the skin.
  • Fermented Ginseng Berry Filtrate – Maintains and preserves youthful skin due to its powerful anti-aging properties
  • Red Ginseng ExtractImproves the firmness and resilience of the skin with its powerful anti-aging properties
  • Yunzhi Herb Extract – Improves the skin’s natural ability to hydrate and retain water, while repairing and renewing the skin at the same time
  • Licorice Extract – Brightens and energises the skin

The ampoule comes in a glass dropper bottle where you can control the amount of ampoule you want to disperse. With one light press on the bulb of the dropper, the amount of ampoule dispensed would be sufficient for my entire face.

The consistency of the ampoule is rather thick as compared to the texture of most serums (maybe that’s the reason why it’s called ampoule instead of serum?) but application on the skin is smooth and absorption by the skin is reasonably fast.

However, I noticed that the ampoule appears somewhat sticky on my face during the day (probably due to our hot and humid weather) than at night. I thought maybe I should be less generous with the amount of ampoule used during the day and see if it changes anything. Indeed, the ampoule is completely absorbed and no more stickiness.

Ultra Nutrition Night Cream 50ml (S$41)

Key ingredients and benefits:

  • Volcanic Seawater
  • Fermented Ginseng Berry Filtrate
  • Red Ginseng Extract
  • Licorice Extract
  • Vegetable Worm Mushroom Extract – Contains rich amino acids which improve elasticity of the skin and reduce fine lines
  • Niacinamide and Adenosin – Both contain whitening and anti-wrinkling properties

After applying the ampoule and making sure it’s fully absorbed by the face, next would be the Ultra Nutrition Night Cream.

The night cream is thick and rich in texture. On my first two nights of use, I find it heavy for my skin. My face would feel sticky despite some time after application. Then I thought probably I should reduce the amount of night cream (and did the same for the ampoule) and then it starts to work for me. A little goes a long way, and less is more for those who are budget-conscious.

My thoughts for both products after trying out for two weeks? In the beginning, I find the use of ampoule + night cream a tad too heavy for my combination skin when I use the usual same amount like how I would for my other brands of skincare. But after I started reducing the product amount  after the 3rd day, I find it manageable and my skin appears hydrated and supple when I wake up in the morning. My face also appears slightly less oily throughout the day since it’s getting sufficient hydration from both products I used.

If you are a ginseng lover like myself, you would love the scent of these products. I feel like I’m in ginseng haven whenever I use them. LOL! Both the ampoule and night cream has a noticeable ginseng scent but yet not overpowering. But if you are not a ginseng lover, fret not. The scent dissipates shortly after application.

For those with normal to dry skin, you might want to try out all four products from the NUTRIDERM range for your anti-aging skincare regime. For those with oily skin or prone to breakouts, I would recommend that you start with the toner and ampoule first to test out how your skin reacts the products before getting the day and night creams. For myself with combination skin, I realized that on hormonal days where my skin is more oily than usual, I can do without the night cream and just depend on the ampoule to keep my skin hydrated and supple.

To sum up, I think DCS offers products with premium ingredients at a modest price. For those who are looking for anti-aging products, NUTRIDERM is one range you can get your hands on for a start. Or since Christmas is round the corner, I guess this makes a good gift too :)

Something noteworthy especially for animal lovers out there… DCS is a company that practices “cruelty-free” policy and all products from DCS are not tested on animals. Another good reason to support this brand isn’t it?
