NEW Beauty Clinic Masks & Blackhead Nose Pack

A few weeks ago, I was delighted to receive a package from Serenity Allure and it contains 5 pieces of Vita Whitebeam Essential Masks, 5 pieces of N.M.F. Aquaringer Ampoule Masks and a box of Pore Stamping Serum (Blackhead Nose Pack).

The Pore Stamping Serum (nose pack) is retailing at S$17.95 and the Clinie Masks are retailing at $4.95 per piece. All products are now available at selected Guardian outlets. Sephora outlets will be selling the masks (only) from this month August too.

About Beauty Clinic

Clinie, also known as Beauty Clinic, is a leading clinical skincare brand that is developed by the top clinical experts in Korea. Their Clinie mask is one of the hottest selling clinical masks in Korea and it sells over 500,000 pieces in Korea each month. Clinie mask is now available in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. Their skincare line is also well-received by many Korean celebrities too.

Clinie Mask

Beauty Clinic mask comes in 2 ranges – Vita Whitebeam Essential Mask and N.M.F. Aquaringer Ampoule Mask. Both are made of an ultra thin silk cellulose material that enables an efficient absorption of the essential ingredients.

Vita Whitebeam Essential Mask – Whitening mask (S$4.95 per piece)

Vita Whitebeam Essential Mask contains potent ingredients such as Vitamin C derivative, tocopherol and y-cryzanol that help brighten dull skin & control the production of melanin. It is claimed to effectively lighten dark spots and pigmentation due to frequent sun exposure and even up skin tone.

N.M.F. Aquaringer Ampoule Mask – Hydrating mask (S$4.95 per piece)

N.M.F. Aquaringer Ampoule Mask contains moisturizing ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramide that are claimed to help moisture the skin and reduce enlarged pores. Each N.M.F. Aquaringer Ampoule Mask is claimed to contain equivalent of one ampoule content.

Although this ultra-thin mask looks extremely wet when it’s removed but it doesn’t drip or leak.

Both Clinie masks are made of silk cellulose material that fits perfectly on my skin. The sheer thinness of the mask allows the skin to breathe easily and aids in efficient absorption of the highly concentrated essence.

I actually love the sheer thinness of the mask and it feels super comfortable on my skin. I’ve almost forgotten I have my mask on at times.

Beauty Questions? Ask Dr. Irwin
- Glycolic Acid

Reader’s Question

I’ve got uneven skin tone. The skin of my neck, butt, knees, elbows are way darker than my original olive tone. One aesthetician told me use an 15-20% glycolic acid lotion but since I can’t buy online I need a product from drug store. Which drug store product is good? What’s your advice for my problem?

Dr. Irwin’s Answer

Often, in a situation like this, it’s good to start with the more gentle version of the product and see how that works first. These are not prescription items. You could try the glycolic lotion 10% but you will need to use it for 8 weeks to see if it helps. If you get irritated with it, stop like product like it states on the label. If you’re not better then, you need to see a dermatologist. Higher strength glycolics can be irritating  and may make pigment problems worse. See more about color and texture issues

NEW Clarins HydraQuench Range – Intensive Serum Bi-Phase, HydraQuench Cream-Melt & Cream-Gel

Last week, I have attended a private Clarins event to preview their NEW HydraQuench Range that comprises of Intensive Serum Bi-Phase, HydraQuench Cream-Melt and HydraQuench Cream-Gel. The NEW HydraQuench Range will be officially launched on 26th August 2011 at all Clarins counters.

It was held at their newly renovated cozy waiting lounge at Clarins Skin Spa @ Wheelock Place.

Clarins Skin Spa @ Wheelock Place is a one-stop beauty spa that provides comprehensive treatment service ranging from facials, body treatments, specific treatments, body massages and men’s facials.

I always believe in skin hydration and in fact, it is one of the most important skincare regimen that I hate to leave without. It is believed that a well-maintained hydrating skin will improve the skin barrier function. It gives the skin a better defense against environmental assaults.

Researches have shown that your skin craves moisture if your face is oily and yet peeling around the eyes and mouth, if your complexion isn’t clear, or if your makeup won’t stay on. If any of this happen, you should focus on hydrating your skin, not on removing oil. Replenishing moisture is key to regulating oil production. In addition, dryness can cause lines and wrinkles too.

So what’s the difference between a ideally hydrated skin and a dehydrated skin?

The ideal skin hydration shows on the skin’s surface but it starts deep down. Soft, radiant, young-looking skin depends first and foremost on the dermal water supply that flows to the epidermis and corneal layer. By helping to replenish the water reservoirs that lie deep down in skin, HydraQuench skin care acts on the very source of all skin level’s hydration.

NEW HydraQuench Range – The Active Ingredients

New improved HydraQuench range contains hyaluronic acid with two molecular weights, for double action hydration and to replenish dermal water reservoirs. Hyaluronic acid complex, obtained from wheat and easily absorbed by the body, is an innovative combination of two types of hyaluronic acid that is formulated by Clarins Research. One with a high molecular weight (hMW) and the other with a low molecular weight (iMW).

hMW hyaluronic acid, a high molecular weight, improves protection of the skin’s surface (epidermal) by preventing excessive evaporation of water. It helps to keep up optimal hydration levels on the skin surface and this ensure a more supple and smoother skin.

iMW hyaluronic acid, a low molecular weight, penetrates into deeper dermal layer and ensures optimal absorption in skin that result in the natural production of hyaluronic acid. It replenishes the main water reservoir in skin and ensures long-lasting hydration and firm, toned skin.

Katafray, one of the key ingredients, is a cedrelopsis grevei tree that grows in the dry forests of Madagascar. Madagascan women often use the tree in the beauty rituals such as a mask. Katafray bark extract is part of a fair trade and sustainable development programme that are exclusively developed by Clarins.

So what can Katafray do? (I’m holding one here) Katafray extract is claimed to help boost the production of filaggrin. Filaggrin is a protein found in epidermal cells that boost the barrier function of the corneal layer and also plays a role in the formation of natural moisturizing factors (NMFs). Katafray extract restores skin’s barrier effect and increases the production of natural moisturizing factors (NMFs).

Other ingredients that can be found in the new HydraQuench range are Promegranate, White Tea, Chondrus Crispus, Alpine Willow Herb, Arctic Cloudberry, Inca Peanut, Sorbier and many more…

HydraQuench Intensive Serum Bi-Phase – S$94 / 30ml

This unique Bi-Phase texture is a Clarins Innovation inspired by the composition of hydrolipidic film, the dual hydric and lipidic natural of skin cells.

HydraQuench Intensive Serum Bi-Phase combines 1/5 of an oil phase (the upper part) with 4/5 of a water phase (the lower part) to restore its capacity to retain water. By shaking the bottle before use, the two phases combine.

NEW Biotherm Skin-Ergetic Serum – A Solution To Fatigue Skin

For many, occasionally having physical or mental fatigue which include weariness, tiredness, exhaustion, lethargy, lack of energy in body and mind is a commonplace. But have you heard of fatigue skin?

What is fatigue skin? Fatigue or tired skin is the effects of physical and mental fatigue. It is caused by unhealthy lifestyle habits and external factors such as lack of sleep, improper diet, smoking, pollution, sun exposure and stress. Your complexion appears dull, rough, uneven, lack of radiance and enlarged pores.

Even one night’s of sufficient sleep is not enough to recover the skin condition. As there is no specific skincare solutions to meet women new needs, Biotherm has therefore developed a skincare solution to help target the visible signs of tired skin.

Last week, I was privileged to attend my first Biotherm event to preview its latest innovative serum – Biotherm Skin-Ergetic Serum.

Each blogger was presented with a small lovely recycled bag that contains a full size Biotherm Skin-Ergetic Serum, a foil packaging that contains activation capsule and a bottle of candies.

Biotherm Skin-Ergetic Serum – S$99.00 / 50ml

Biotherm Skin-Ergetic Serum, a paraben-free serum, is claimed to be the ultra-effective solution for erasing the visible signs of tired skin. It will be launched on 26th August 2011 and it will be available at all Biotherm counters in leading department stores and Sephora.

L’Oreal Research (Biotherm is under L’Oreal Group) has demonstrated that improper functioning of the mitochondria leads to deterioration of skin tissue. So what is Mitochondria? Mitochondria are the source of 90% of cellular energy production and are intra-cellular organelles essential to proper cell functioning.

Decrease in mitochondrial functioning >> Increase in oxidative stress >> Skin tissue deterioration

Due to this loss of cellular vitality, the skin shows visible signs of fatigue. And three ways to fight against the signs of fatigue are :

  • Boosting skin cell vitality by stimulating mitochondrial activity
  • Helping the skin protect itself from daily aggressions
  • Stimulating the skin’s capacity to recover and to eliminate waste

Although I don’t intend to bore you too much with the technology behind the product, just bare with me a little while more as I need to explain on how the key ingredients may help to fight the signs of fatigue. ;-)

Active Ingredients

Biotherm believes that the best active ingredient to fight fatigue or tired skin is broccoli. Broccoli? Yes broccoli, so what can it help on fatigue skin? Well, broccoli is selected for its antioxidant functions and its capacity to induce defense systems, this plant contains a very active compound called sulforaphane.

Biotherm chose young, sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprouts to stimulate the cells’ self-defense mechanisms and puts them in a state of alert for improved response in case of aggression.

Skin Ergetic Serum is claimed that 99% of the ingredients in the serum are of natural origin. It is FREE of paraben, mineral oil and artificial colors.

Skin Ergetic Serum contains other natural ingredients such as soy extract and botanical cells from apples to help stimulate cellular metabolism. It also contains fruit acids natural AHA ingredients like lemon and sugar cane to facilitate surface exfoliation and cellular renewal for a smoother, more luminous skin.

Although this serum is tested on sensitive skin, I personally would refrain from using any product that contains lemon. It may cause irritation on my sensitive skin.

A Fresh Skincare Formula that is activated at the last minute

Alike to Vitamin C, sulforaphane-rich broccoli extract is unstable when added to a skincare formula. To solve the problem, Biotherm laboratories decided to isolate this ingredient in a capsule so that it could be activated at the last minute, immediately before the first application.

The mechanic of this packaging is very similar to Sisley Vitamin C Serum.

Vichy’s 80th Anniversary & Spa Water Workshop

Last week I was glad to attend the Vichy Spa Water Workshop to be re-introduced the goodness of Vichy Thermal Spa Water and to preview the latest Vichy products – Aqualia Thermal Aqua-Gel Moisturizer and Aqualia Thermal Mask.

Do you know that stress, pollution, climate variations and sun exposure can accelerate water evaporation on the skin’s surface? When it lacks water and minerals, skin renews itself less quickly, its structure becomes disorganized and allows more water to escape. At the surface, dehydration marks appear, skin becomes weakened, rough and sensitive too.

Inflammation such as stinging, itching and burning sensation will occur when skin becomes sensitive. So what can Vichy Thermal Spa Water do to help on these problems?

Vichy Thermal Spa Water

Vichy, the leading skincare brand in Europearn pharmacies, is known for its thermal spa water which is claimed to be more than just water. Originated from a spring in the town of Vichy in France, Vichy Thermal Spa Water is 100% natural and is rich in 15 rare minerals from an incredible journey in the heart of magmatic rocks. It is considered “living” water as it cannot be reproduced industrially and is therefore, an active ingredient that is genuinely pure and natural. Its exceptional richness allows soothing, fortifying and regenerating for a healthy-looking skin.

Soothing : Anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant

Fortifying : Strengthens and protects tissue against aging

Regenerating : Stimulates cell renewal

Its 100% natural properties is claimed to effectively soothe sensitive skin and reinforce skin’s natural defense systems. Researches have also shown that Vichy Thermal Spa Water has the highest ability to protect skin against external aggressors.

Do you know?

All Vichy products are formulated with Vichy Thermal Spa Water (water from Lucas Spring), which is particularly tailored to the needs of sensitive skin.

Thermal Spa Water Spray – 100% PURE Vichy Thermal Spa Water

Vichy Thermal Spa Water in a spray format offers all the therapeutic properties of thermal water with increased effectiveness thanks to its spraying of micro-droplets. The energizing mechanical action of the spray gives the skin a micro massage and thus optimizes the very benefits of Vichy Thermal Spa Water.

It is claimed that daily usage of Vichy Thermal Spa Water helps to soothe the skin and reinforces its natural defense systems. Skin is therefore more supple and resistant, all congestion is relieved.

Usage Benefits :

  • Soothes and strengthens the skin
  • Improves skin’s natural defence
  • Removes cleanser or soap residue
  • Tones, softens and smoothes the skin
  • Sets makeup, removes excess oil during day
  • Improves skincare efficacy

You can use Vichy Thermal Spa Water Spray day and evening or for various reasons as above image. Such as to soothe skin in harsh cold weather, sunburns, dehydrated skin, tight skin during traveling or after laser/chemical peel/microdermabrasion.

You can actually spray the Thermal Spa Water on a paper mask to soothe your skin too.

Due to my sensitive skin and stress, I actually encountered minor irritation on my cheek area during the event. I therefore did a live demo by spraying my face with Vichy Thermal Spa Water Spray. The irritation actually subsided an hour later. ;-)

Vichy’s 80th anniversary

To celebrate Vichy’s 80th anniversary this year in 2011, Vichy has introduced 2 limited edition Vichy Thermal Spa Water Spray in pink or blue bottle. The blue bottle is available in 50ml only.

Newly Launched Clarins Bust Beauty Lotion

Frankly, I do not really pay much attention to my breasts all this while. I have fairly small boots and because of the small size, thankfully they are still looking pretty firm and not much sagging even in my 40s now.

I believe many of us, like me, do not like the idea of breast enhancement through surgical. I personally prefer the safer alternative using products instead.

Clarins, the leading bust beauty specialist in Europe, launches Bust Beauty Lotion the natural way to a fuller, firmer bust.

The Bust Care range is now comprised of Bust Beauty Firming Lotion, NEW Bust Beauty Lotion and Bust Beauty Extra-Lift Gel.

New Clarins Bust Beauty Lotion is now available at all Clarins counters from 1st July 2011.

New Clarins Bust Beauty Lotion – S$85 / 50ml

A fuller bust, but also a firmer bust…

A beautiful bust also means a firmer bust. Clarins has taken from natural plant extracts with the most powerful firming properties.

Quince. Organic quince extract reactivates synthesis of collagen for more toned, firmer skin and tightens the network of dermal fibres.

Vu Sua. Vu sua extract prevents the breakdown of collagen fibres and protects them from the harmful effects of free radicals. The frame of the “natural bra” is strengthened and the bust is firmed.

A little more volume….an enhanced bust.

The size of the bust is linked to the presence of the mammary gland and also the quantity of lipids stored in fat cells in the bust (adipocytes).

The larger the stock of lipids, the more the adipocyte “swells”, resulting in a plumping effect under the skin. So optimizing the storage of lipids in fat cells of the bust will enhance bust volume.

Voluform®, an active ingredient obtained from biotechnology, enhances the breast with two action levels :

  • It encourages the presence of more functional adipocytes in the bust area,
  • It optimizes the storage of lipids in adipocytes present in the bust.

Because a beautiful d©collet© also means good bust hold, Clarins has also included in the formula of Bust Beauty Lotion a tightening plant extract – Oat Sugars.

I can’t wait to try this complimentary Bust Beauty Lotion. Received at the same time with the Colour Definition Autumn Make-Up Collection recently.

Since I have small boots, this Bust Beauty Lotion is definitely for me! It is recommended to enhance small breasts and improve their shape. YES!!

Inside the lovely red box was a box of For Beloved One Melasleep Whitening Bio-Cellulose Mask (3 pieces of masks) and a press kit.

I have briefly came across this brand during my last trip to Taiwan last year. And if you are fan of Taiwan’s skincare products, you probably would have heard of this top-selling beauty brand For Beloved One. If you have not, continue reading to find out more about For Beloved One and Bio-Cellulose Mask.

Margaret Wu, the founder of For Beloved One, has been a cosmetics editor for 20 years which she has started in the age of 18. Her concise comments and professionalism earned her reputation of ‘The Pioneer of Beauty’.

She specializes in new cutting-edge trends in cosmetics. In those years, she has tried by herself almost all skincare products from all brands; however, she has found that none of them could truly satisfied women’s need.

In end 2003, she has launched the world’s first ‘Bio-Cellulose Mask’ into the market along with the establishment of her new brand For Beloved One. Many celebrities from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and China such as Barbie Hsu, Annie Yi and Niu Er are fans of this newly introduced cosmeceutical product.

There are 6 skincare series under For Beloved One : Melasleep Whitening, Extreme Hydration, Active Anti-Wrinkles, DelightFresh, Eatwellism and Skin Specialists.

In 2010, For Beloved One introduced Rose Silk Collagen Essential Revitalizing Cream specially created for dry and cold weather in China.

Melasleep Whitening Bio-Cellulose Mask – S$63 / 3 pieces

Margaret Wu is proud to pioneer the ever first ‘Bio-Cellulose Mask’ that is made of a biomedical material, which is usually used as an artificial skin and cardiovascular repair material. Her first introduction to this skin-friendly material was during a visit with a biomedical lab. After further research into the production process of bio-cellulose and testing it on herself, she finally found the miracle answer to her unsatisfactory for cosmetic products for years and proudly launched the world’s first ‘Bio-Cellulose Mask’.

Melasleep Whitening Bio-Cellulose Mask, the hero product under Melasleep Whitening range, has achieved great popularity selling over million units since its launch. This world’s first revolutionary mask is made from the microbial fermentation microorganisms, and is evaluated by the US FDA and earned the recognition of high safety. It is made of the most subtle fiber in the nature with only 20 nanometers in diameter (merely 1/133 of an average non-woven fiber). It holds a great skin-friendly texture with iontophoresis effect and gives serum product a better infiltration efficiency.

This bio-cellulose mask is created with 3 world-renowned pharmaceutical patents and is claimed that one bio-cellulose mask equals the effect of one ‘iontophoresis’ treatment. Which means the serum can penetrate into the skin effectively.

August 11 –
To believe or not to believe

Healthy Habits

Before you prepare each meal, hold up three fingers and say to yourself: “I need a protein, a god source of carbohydrates, and a small amount of unsaturated fat.” Therefore, your typical meal should consist of a piece of chicken or fish, fresh vegetables and fruits, and a small source of monounsaturated fats such as olive oil or a few nuts such as almonds or macadamias.

Add a habit called grazing -eating four to five small, well-balanced meals a day – and you’ll keep your insulin levels balanced. The value of eating several small to medium meals is that you never overload your body with sugars or other nutrients. Even when you’re eating healthy foods, you can have too much of a good thing. If you eat a very large meal, for example, you fill your gastrointestinal track with food, which then loads your bloodstream with sugar, which makes your insulin levels spike. So it’s best to eat small quantities of food throughout the day.
