Exclusive Preview Of Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Toner, Cleanser & Gel Cream

Last Friday, I was delighted to be exclusively invited to preview the new “OIL-FREE” collection from Kiehl’s Singapore at their newly renovated office at Winsland House. This Ultra Facial Oil-Free collection, launched on 26th May islandwide, is the newest innovation to the Ultra Facial range.

The newly launched range of products, for normal to oily skin, are Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Toner, Cleanser and Gel Cream. They are FREE of paraben, fragrance, silicone and oil! They are claimed to eliminate shine for 24 hours! You can now say goodbye to blotters!

It was a private event and only Pei Xian from and myself were invited.

Delicious cakes were served during the short preview.

Measure my shine level with Kiehl’s Skin Barrier Tabs.

Oh my! Didn’t realize my skin is so oily. Blame it on the humid weather! :-(

Kiehl’s created this media blotter kit for all media representatives.

Wanna find out your shine level too? Visit any of the Kiehl’s outlets now and measure your natural shine level with Kiehl’s Skin Barrier Tabs.

No More Blotters!

I believe many of us are suffering from oily skin and lack of moisture at the same time. Whenever we talk about moisture, many people with oily skin will believe that any product that provides moisture will tend to cause skin to get oilier and shiny. This is so wrong!

So forget about excessive washing, blotting and drying up your skin with astringents as this will lead to barrier function damage and moisture loss. Clogged pores and breakout will surface if excess oil is not treated properly. When barrier function is damaged and moisture is lost, skin will get irritated and over produce oil and therefore create shine.

But how are we able to provide moisture with 24-hour shine free at the same time? Well in fact, the effective way to tackle oily skin is to replenish moisture into the skin. So instead of stripping the oil out of our skin like most people do, replenishing moisture is key to regulating oil production.

Introducing The New Ultra Facial Oil-Free Collection!

Kiehl’s Since 1851, New York-based purveyor of fine quality skin care, is pleased to introduce a moisture-replenishing, skincare collection for normal to oily skin – Ultra Facial Oil-Free. It is claimed to balance skin in as little as 1 week.

The new breakthrough technology uses the moisture-retaining ingredients and naturally-derived sugar to release pure hydration into skin and then lock in moisture.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Collection is oil-free, paraben-free, silicone-free, dye-free and fragrance-free to help rebalance skin’s hydration levels and provide all-day no-shine moisture to skin in three unique ways:

1. Rebalanced Skin — the skincare regimen works to ensure the correct balance of oils and hydration for a healthy skin barrier.

  • Water-infused humectants: Antarcticine protects skin from extreme external aggressors while moisture-retaining ingredients of Imperata Cylindrica and Glycerin draw pure hydration into the skin barrier and allow moisture to penetrate into the skin.
  • Naturally-derived sugar: helps lock in moisture and reinforces the skin barrier to prevent loss.

2. Oil-Free Skin Conditioners — highly compatible with normal to oily skin, the oil-free skin conditioners work with the natural lipids of the skin to control shine for up to 24 hours.

3. Gentle but Effective Formulations — safe for even sensitive skin, Ultra Facial Oil-Free formulas do not irritate skin or over activate it, a common cause of over-production of oil.

Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cleanser

$38.00 for 5.0 fl. Oz. / 150ml

This Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cleanser has a light smooth creamy texture which effectively helps to remove excess oil and impurities without making the skin feels tight. It is claimed to help control shine and reduce oil on skin’s surface for 24 hours.

May 11 –
To believe or not to believe

Women who wear makeup sometimes use a cleansing cream or makeup remover before they wash their faces. I don’t think this is necessary, unless you use a very greasy or waterproof makeup. A water-soluble cleanser and warm water will remove most types of foundation. The fewer things you use on your skin the better, and in most cases there’s no reason to use two cleansers.

If you must use a makeup remover, then apply it only where you need it. For instance, if you have black circles under your eyes from your mascara, then use an eye-makeup remover on the skin beneath the eyes.

Many people believer that tugging on their skin can cause wrinkles, and so they always use an upward and/or circular motion when cleansing. I’m not sure where the idea that massage, even quite vigorous massage, cause wrinkles comes from, but of all the things that contribute to aging skin, rubbing or pulling or massaging it aren’t anywhere near the top of the list.

Beauty tip of the month

If you feel that dry skin is your most serious problem, start an aggressive exfoliation and collagen stimulation program, even though it is counterintuitive, and see how your skin responds.

Be sure to use the right lipids, the skin-identical kind. You can know you are using the right lipids on your skin if the serum or cream penetrates and disappears into your skin within a few minutes. If it lingers on the skin surface as a shiny residue for hours, it is not absorbing into your skin properly. It is the wrong product for you, so get rid of it. It is merely sitting on top, sealing from the outside, possibly even clogging pores. The right moisturizer supports the skin lipid barrier from the inside of the stratum corneum (the upper layer of the epidermus), so it is not visible as a shiny layer on the outside. It disappears into the skin within a few minutes and provides internal support.

- Can Tumeric Powder Remove Hair?

Reader’s Question

I m 19 year girl my docter advised me to use acnestar soap to reduce pimples after using that i had small dark hairs in my upper lip my family advised me to rub it off wlth turmeric power the hair is gone but i notice dark stains like moustache naked What shall i do to get rid off it

Dr. Irwin’s Answer

Wow – that’s one I’ve never heard – about rubbing tumeric powder on the skin to remove hair. I love tumeric to cook with but I really wouldn’t advise rubbing it on your skin because it will stain it. That sounds like exactly what happened. Basically it should come off within a couple of weeks as it’s just the cells of the outer dead layer (stratum corneum) that are stained. Please do NOT over scrub this trying to get it off. It will cause irritation which could cause more pigment to develop. Just very gently use a wash cloth on it every 2-3 days and it should gradually lighten. If it doesn’t, see a dermatologist please.

Shoe Trends Spring Summer 2011 – Shoe Lovers Must Have!

Lately out of the blue, I’ve became obsessed with shoes! The obsession has lead me to discover what are the latest shoe trends for Spring Summer 2011. Here are what I have uncovered the hottest shoe trends you wouldn’t want to miss in this season :

Platform Shoes, Wedges & Clogs

Chunky shoes are real hot this season! I love wedges and they are definitely a must have for this season! They not only look fashionably cool but also provide an extra length to the legs at great comfort.

In this season, there are many types of platforms and here are what you should look out for :

<images :>

Wooden Platform Wedges

Flatforms Shoes

Flatforms shoes are a combination between wedges and flats. They create extra lengths to the leg without losing comfort as they are high, but not steep like the usual platform shoes. Michael Kors, Philip Lim and Band of Outsiders have created some great flatforms shoes.

Strappy Shoes

If you’re looking for a flirty, feminine look, strappy shoes are a must in this season. Strappy shoes now come in many forms with interesting and creative ideas by replacing traditional leather straps with fabric straps and even shoe laces. The strappy laces can be seen tie into a bow or flower on the ankles. Alexander Wang, Christian Dior and Diane von Furstenberg have all featured strappy ankle shoes on their runways. <images :>

In this Spring Summer 2011 collection, espadrilles are real HOT especially if they are flats. Espadrilles are shoes that are made of canvas or cotton uppers and the sole of the shoe is made of rope or rubber that is formed to look like rope. You may find espadrilles with wedge heel sandal in this season too. <images :>

My Japan Holiday Diary (Part 2) – Hakodate, A Seafood Paradise!

Last week, I’ve published a post on “My Japan Holiday Diary (Part 1) : Hakodate, A Quiet & Beautiful Town!” and I’m here again to continue sharing with you my unforgettable holiday journey and this round, I’m going to talk about food, lots of fresh seafood of course!

Many friends have asked if it is safe to consume seafood in Japan at this period of time due to the recent radiation crisis? But frankly, we are not afraid at all! We were there for a few days only and the amount of seafood we took will unlikely to cause life threatening unless we are there for a year or more.

Both my hubby and I extremely enjoy eating and our main agenda in Japan is to eat, eat and eat! We are born to EAT anyway! ;-)

My hubby and I are so crazy about Japanese food and our favorite mouthwatering food is sashimi! And that is why Hakodate has been chosen as one of our must-visit destinations because we wanted to eat lots of seafood at the famous Hakodate Morning Market.

After arriving at Hakodate at around 8am, we decided to leave our luggages with the hotel reception (as it was still early to check in) before proceeding to the Morning Market which opens from 5am till noon. Morning Market is about 10 minutes walk away from the hotel.

Morning Market is pretty big which spans about four city blocks.

Crabs are very popular in the whole of Hokkaido and that includes Hakodate. These baked crabs are really tasty! Yummy!

Almost all the stores at Morning Market sell crabs. If you are traveling to Hokkaido, you definitely have to try the crabs. The crabs sold in Hokkaido are considered the best in Japan.

This isn’t the biggest size crab I’ve ever seen. The crab that this guy was holding is considered an average size crab found in Hokkaido.

These crabs which are already cooked can cost around S$70 to S$90.

The scallops are pretty cheap and priced at only S$17 for 5 pieces. We have bought 4 pieces from here, two to be baked and two to be eaten raw with wasabi.

Awaiting our food to be served at one of the stores. Looking tired after a morning flight! I didn’t put on any makeup except lipstick.

Finally, our first meal in Hakodate! We have ordered two baked scallops and two fresh scallops to be eaten raw. Yummy!

Other than crabs, Hokkaido is also popular with its fresh shellfish such as clams, mussels, oysters, scallops and many more…..

These live oysters are super fresh and yummy even without Tabasco sauce and lemon juice at all. I miss it so much now!

These sea urchins (uni) are so fresh! Cost at only 500Yen (S$8)! You probably have to pay more than double for the same amount in Singapore.

Salmon eggs (ikura) are very popular in Hakodate too. My hubby loves them!

In the market area, you can find many small restaurants (as per image above) that are offering fresh seafood breakfasts such as domburi.

Can’t really find small fishes in the market though. Almost all the fishes are real big.

Finally settled for our early lunch at one of the small restaurant at Morning Market on Day 1.

In fact, there are many eateries at this cozy town. We are pampered with choices.

It was a waste that we couldn’t try out the food and beer at this super big 2-storey Hakodate Beer Restaurant. It was closed due to the Tsunami.

The streets are filled with plentiful, mostly small restaurants like this.

Spotted this mini van at the Morning Market. It looks like a toy to me.

Here we are again at the Morning Market on Day 2.

Here’re our breakfasts for day 2. I actually feel awkward to take rice in the early morning but my hubby loves it so much.

In fact the whole of Morning Market was affected by tsunami. When the sudden waves hit the area on 11th March, the water level rose suddenly to where my hip is (insert image). The whole sitting area where my hubby sat was completely destroyed and the wall in front of him has collapsed.

After speedy renovation on the damaged areas, the whole stretch of restaurants managed to reopen for business at the same time 2 weeks after the tsunami. I really admired the Japanese, they are very helpful and united whenever crisis hits them.

- Alternative Help For Severe Acne

Reader’s Question

I’ve been suffering from severe acne for the past 13 years! I’ve tried everything from Diane-35 birth control pills to Accutane. Nothing helps, the Accutane did helped when i was on it. But once i stop, my acne came back as well. Not as severe as before but my skin is not totally healed. Because of the severe ance i had in the past & now, i have severe pitted holes scares all over my entire face. I undergo laser – C02 Fractional Laser which most Dermatologist advised me to do to help smoothen my scars. I’ve already done it 8 times but i see no improvement. And now I’m starting to doubt if this laser even works. The scars are still deep & ugly. I am at the end of the knot, i don’t know what to do anymore. The acne, the scars is just tearing myself esteem down. Pls advise. Thank you

Dr. Irwin’s Answer

My heart goes out to you. It sounds like you’ve been through a lot and the problem still isn’t solved. I’m not sure why all the different treatments you’ve done aren’t helping. This is one of those situations where I think you really need a second and perhaps even a third opinion because your situation is so complicated. NEW Vichy Normaderm Tri-Activ Anti-Imperfection Hydrating Care

Last week, I’ve attended the Vichy workshop at House @ Dempsey Road to preview the new improved version of Vichy Normaderm Tri-Activ Anti-Imperfection Hydrating Care.

What a relaxing greenery venue to introduce the new Vichy product.

Tasty canapes and interesting drink were served at the event.

The new packaging (on the right) has 3 circles that symbolize triple performance – anti-imperfection, mattifying and 24-hour hydration.

Do you know that 20 million units of Normaderm Anti-Imperfection Hydrating Care have been sold worldwide since 2003?

Vichy Normaderm range is specially designed for imperfection skin such as acne, skin oiliness and clogged pores. In fact, Vichy has done a research that 3 out of 5 Singaporean women actually suffer from oily skin imperfections. Due to the humid tropical climate in Singapore, many women find it really hard to control their skin oiliness. So how can we control the increased oil production without compromising skin hydration?

And can we achieve an anti-imperfection, mattifying skin with 24-hour hydration? Vichy believes it is possible with the new improved Vichy Normaderm Tri-Activ Anti-Imperfection Hydrating Care.

The 4 Most Common Skin Imperfections are acne/pimples, clogged pores/blackheads, oily skin and enlarged pores.

Introducing the new Vichy Normaderm Tri-Activ Anti-Imperfection Hydrating Care

This new improved Normaderm Anti-Imperfection Hydrating Care is created to provide stronger and faster anti-imperfection results for a healthier and clearer skin. It is paraben free and it is suitable for sensitive skin.

Triple Performance in one application

1. Anti-imperfection

2. Mattifying

3. 24-hour hydration

My Japan Holiday Diary (Part 1) : Hakodate, A Quiet & Beautiful Town!

My husband and I have recently enjoyed one of our most unforgettable holiday in Japan. Yes yes I know, why now? Everyone has advised me to avoid Japan at all cost! “Oh please don’t go to Japan at this time, but if you wanna die early, then go ahead!” Japan nuclear crisis and radiation issue have scared the hell out of us with many foreigners living in Japan desperately getting out of Japan and no tourist will willing to take risk to enter Japan.

Strong wind at 3º @ Hakodate

Well two clowns (myself and hubby) couldn’t care less and instead of canceling the whole trip like most people do (Japan earthquake @11 March 2011 & our departure @15 April 2011), all we did was making minor itinerary amendment by replacing our Tokyo stop to Noboribetsu (Hokkaido’s most famous hot spring resort). To be precise, the four places (Hakodate, Noboribetsu, Otaru and Sapporo) we went are not anywhere near the Fukushima nuclear plant or Sendai. We were just basically touring around Hokkaido island itself, a separate island in northern part of Japan.

We have already planned this free-and-easy holiday two months (Feb 2011) prior to our departure and all hotels, international and domestic flights have already fully paid even way before the Japan disaster occurred. Most hotels and domestic flight were booked and paid via online except international flights which was booked through local agent and the one-way AirDo domestic flight (to Hakodate) was booked and paid through international phone call to their Japan office. We have incurred a few hundreds (in S$) cancelation fees for canceling the Tokyo stop.

Our Flights Were Terminated Few Days Before Our Departure…………..ARHHH!!

Barely less than a week before our departure, I received a bad news from my travel agent that Singapore Airlines has decided to terminate all night flight to Haneda Airport in Japan with immediate effect due to the bad response that was affected by the nuclear crisis.

The rest of the following days were maniac! They totally screwed up our schedule! Our initial plan was to take the SQ NIGHT flight and to arrive Haneda Airport at 5am in order to catch our first domestic flight to Hakodate at 6.45am. SQ suggested to us to take the DAY flight a day earlier so that we could arrive at Haneda at 11pm in order to catch our early morning domestic flight the day after. But what are we going to do between 11pm to 6.45am? We were fighting real hard for a compensation from them cos we purposely forked out extra $200 per pax just for the night flight.

After marching to SQ office @ ION Orchard several times, they managed to compensate us to our favour at the eleventh hour (less than 24 hours before our departure). They compensated us with free hotel stay @ Haneda Airport, refunds for fare differences and in-flight vouchers.

Singapore Airlines have provided a free night stay at Haneda Hotel located at Haneda Airport.

Breakfast with a nice view.

Our Second Free-&-Easy Trip To Japan!

When my hubby suggested Hakodate as one of our destinations for this second round trip to Japan, I was actually skeptical and not keen at all. Hakodate?? Which part of Japan? Is it boring there?

After some researches via online, I realized the place is pretty quiet and there isn’t much interesting places of interest to explore except the famous Hakodate morning market. I was so worried I will feel bored at this place but to my surprise, we actually enjoyed our 2 nights stay at Hakodate and we swore to visit this lovely town again!

Hakodate, we will be back real soon!!!
