My Verdict On 10-Day Weight-Loss Challenge With AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto

.

Hooray! I’m so delighted to have finally completed the 10-day weight-loss challenge with AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto. Many thanks to AFC Japan for extending this challenge to me.

.

10-day Weight-Loss Challenge

For this 10-day challenge, I was required to replace my heaviest meal (usually dinner) with one pouch/flavour of AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto for 10 days consecutively. And for the rest of the meals, I will eat as per normal.

Before I actually embark on this first dietary challenge, I always has this perception that weight-loss battle can be tough. I was skeptical if I would drop out halfway during the course. Well, to my surprise, this weight-loss program is actually quite easy breezy. There is no starving or exercise needed.

.

AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto

AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto (S$36), a low-calorie nutritious meal replacement, controls calorie intake by reducing food portions while keeping us satiated. With an average of 150kcal only per pouch, it actually provides sufficient sense of fullness, thanks to the secret ingredient Konjac. Each pack of Risotto is mixed with full grain white rice and low-calorie Konjac that is made from Japanese Konnyaku potato which has a similar texture to rice.

Previously, I have actually done a review on AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto and have completed a box of AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto. In the span of one week, I have actually lost 1kg. That was really unexpected!

So for this 10-day challenge, I was given 2 boxes of AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto and each box contains 5 pouches (in 250g), one with each delicious flavour. Therefore there are total of 10 pouches to be completed.

AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto comes in five delicious flavours :

Tomato with Basil @152kcal – it contains chucks of carrot and celery in tomato sauce. Taste like pasta with a hint of basil.

Mediterranean Seafood @117kcal – it contains small bites of Japanese scallop and Japanese littleneck clam. Taste a little like clam chowder.

Curry Stew @173kcal – it contains small bites of chicken and I actually adore this non-spicy Japanese curry taste. It has high vegetable content.

Cream of Mushroom @171kcal – it contains small bites of mushrooms and potatoes with a light creamy sauce.

Assorted Cheese @173kcal – High cheesy taste as it makes from four cheese (Parmesan, Cheddar, Gouda, Gorgonzola).

.

Verdict on the 10-day Weight Loss Challenge

Overeating and inactive lifestyle habits are the common cause of my weight gain. When I consume more calories than what my body can use up, my body will store the excess calories as fat. So in order to have a successful weight loss, I will need to cut down on my overall calories intake. As I grow older now (slow metabolism rate), I find it even harder to lose weight. I believe I’m not the only one right?!. Does that happen to you too?

Dermalogica NEW UltraCalming Skincare Range & Leonard Drake UltraCalming Treatments For Sensitive Skin

.

A few weeks ago, I was exclusively invited to the UltraCalming Skincare Workshop hosted by Leonard Drake Skincare & Health Spa in-conjunction with Dermalogica Skin Care that was held at Marriott Singapore Hotel. The highlights of the workshop were to preview the NEW Dermalogica UltraCalming Skincare range, understanding the causes of skin sensitivity, FITE programme and Leonard Drake’s new line of UltraCalming Treatments.

It was a eye opening event! I have gained precious beauty tips, thanks to special guest Dermalogica’s skincare expert Ms Heather Vounnou, International Corporate Trainer for Asia and New Zealand. She has generously provided an in-depth information on sensitized skin.

What is Sensitive Skin?

Sensitive skin is a skin condition that is used by individuals who consider themselves to be more intolerant of topical preparations, and environmental conditions than the general population. The common characteristics of a sensitive skin are :

  • Skin texture may appear thin and translucent
  • Tightness
  • Red and blotchy
  • Prone to dry flaky patches and cracking
  • Prone to blushing, itching and stinging

.

What are the common causes for sensitivity?

Sensitivity can cause by many factors and the more common causes are stress, climate, hormone medication, weak impaired barrier, humidity, age, cosmetics, diet, dirt, chemical assaults and pollution.

Severe weather is the most common factor for skin sensitivity. Product reactions (stinging and burning) is the second most common factor. The internal factor most strongly associated with sensitive skin is stress.

.

Are You Having Sensitive Skin and/or Sensitized Skin? Do You Know The Difference?

Recent studies indicate that over 50% of individuals describe themselves as ‘sensitive’. But most of them do not actually have a sensitive skin, they’re in fact having sensitized skin. Sensitive skin is genetic whilst sensitized skin is commonly caused by internal or external factors such as inappropriate use of skincare products, aggressive skin treatments, excessive exfoliation, stress or sudden change of climate. The common reactions are itching, stinging or redness.

Guest Blogger Dr. Irwin – Acne Care & Treatments 101

.

Acne Information and Treatments

Acne is something that affects almost everyone at some point in his or her life. Sometimes as a teenager and other times as an adult. The good news is that there are many treatments available to keep acne under control.

Some of the available treatments include acne cleansers and creams both by prescription and from the drugstore, oral antibiotics, oral contraceptives, spironolactone, Accutane, facials, peels, microdermabrasion, lasers, and photodynamic therapy.

What causes acne? It’s a chain of effects, usually starting with hormones, which stimulate our oil glands to produce more oil. This excess oil mixes with dead skin cells and forms a plug. Then bacteria begin to grow causing inflammation. The oil, dead cells and bacteria then spill into the surrounding skin causing more irritation, swelling, pus, and sometimes larger cysts.

Different types of acne are blackheads, whiteheads, red bumps (papules), pustules and cysts (both micro and nodular). Because there are so many different types of acne, it is important to see a good dermatologist who will know how to tailor a treatment to your needs. For example, some medications fight the bacteria and some prevent plug formation. Other medications fight the inflammation or get rid of dead skin cells.

Read my more in depth article on acne: http://www.skintour.com/in-depth/acne

The main goal is to keep your acne under control with the right products, and to make sure you do not have the type of acne that causes scarring (usually the cystic type causes permanent scarring).

Here are some products I recommend if you have mild acne: http://www.skintour.com/oil-control-and-acne-care-products

If you have severe acne, I strongly suggest you see a dermatologist. Dermatologists are trained to treat severe acne, and they will help you to prevent scarring and clear up your skin. Here is a list of dermatologists I recommend in the US: http://www.skintour.com/trusted-experts/your-regional-guide-to-excellent-cosmetic-dermatologists

I also created an acne test which takes about 5 minutes to complete, and at the end you will see what I recommend for your acne profile: http://www.skintour.com/skin-care-tests

Quick tips for everyone dealing with acne:

  1. Be patient, it takes 8-12 weeks to see if a new acne medication is working.
  2. Apply creams/lotions in a thin layer over the entire area, not just on the lesions itself unless specifically labeled for spot treatment.
  3. Don’t pick! Picking can cause scarring.

We were also served with some appetizing finger foods and drinks during the event too.

.

Pretty Hot Fragrance

This is my first preview on fragrance and frankly this is something I’m not very familiar with. If you ask on what kind of fragrance I prefer, well I wouldn’t be able to describe to you other than telling you I never like anything that is too girly or sweet. I tend to like fragrance with a tinge of manly scent.

Pretty Hot is an extension from Elizabeth Arden popular fragrance “Pretty“. Pretty Hot, a much stronger scent than Pretty, is a fragrance of memerizing, fearless, sensuous and sultry. The Pretty Hot bottle is designed in a tinted trendy grenadine colored glass bottle.

“Luminous notes of juicy red current, lush blood orange and mandarin set off sparks. Igniting a daring floralcy, Belle de Nuit explodes like a firework in the night sky. Red peony, Belle de Nuit (Queen of the Night) Scentrek, pimento blossom, Petalia, Georgywood.”

  • Top Notes : red currant, blood orange, juicy mandarin, freesia, red apple
  • Mid Notes : red peony, Belle de Nuit (Queen of the Night) Scentrek, pimento blossom, Petalia, Georgywood
  • Drydown Notes : sensuous amber, white patchouli, tonka crystals, sandalwood, Cosmone

International perfumer Claude Dir of Givaudan, the creator of Pretty Hot, was inspired by the night blossoming flower, Belle de Nuit, at his home in the South of France. On a fateful warm summer evening while dining alfresco, a sultry floral scent floated across the terrace. Captivated by the arrival of this new flower in the night, it sparked Claude’s imagination.

The key ingredient Bella de Nuit, also known as Queen of the Night, blossoms in the moonlight which is a beautiful contrast of fiery red petals that appear like fireworks unfurling in the darkness. The flower exudes an alluring floralcy with a kaleidoscope of spices and the lush, juiciness of dark red currants.

Pretty Hot fragrance is claimed to make a woman feels as sensuous and alluring as the Belle de Nuit. A graceful and unmistakely sexy confidence that turns up the heat, showing off her mesmerizing femininity.

Beauty Questions? Ask Dr. Irwin
- Eye Bags & Tired Eyes

.

Reader’s Question

Hi Dr Irwin,

I have real bad eye bags problem. It makes me look tired and old. I know surgery is an option but its too painful. Any eye products u think helps?

Angela

.

Dr. Irwin’s Answer

That under eye area is a tough one for many women. I wish products made more of difference here but unless you’re allergic to or irritated by the one you’re using (always a possibility), they just don’t help that much. Here are some non surgical things to consider though. If you are allergy or hayfever  prone at all, get a dust mite cover for your mattress and for your pillows. Dust mites love to live in bedding, padded furniture, carpet and drapes – so consider those too. Don’t eat too much salt because it causes puffy eyes and a host of other bad things! Drink plenty of water. This will help flush excess salt out and remember that cheap carbs (anything with white flour and sugar) also cause water retention. A good eye cream may help some so here is a link to some good ones if you want to try something different: http://www.skintour.com/eye-cream-products. If this doesn’t do it, consider a fractionated CO2 laser eye lift : http://www.skintour.com/guide-to-cosmetic-treatments/laser-treatments/guide-to-fractionated-carbon-dioxide-laser

Best,
Dr. Irwin
