Kiehl’s Double Strength Deep Wrinkle Filler Preview

Last week, I have received a pair of complimentary tickets from Kiehl’s Singapore for a movie screening of “Just Go With It”, featuring Jennifer Aniston, Adam Sandler and Nicole Kidman. The whole idea of this movie date is to introduce their new innovative wrinkle treatment – Kiehl’s Double Strength Deep Wrinkle Filler.

Frankly, I have been waiting for a product like this for a long time! An instant filler for my nasalabiol folds, marionette lines and crow’s feet without going under the knife? WOW!! What a breakthrough!

I’m proud of Kiehl’s chemists to have developed an instant smooth wrinkle treatment specially for a mature skin like mine. I was extremely excited after receiving the full-size product two days later and I couldn’t wait any longer and immediately tested the product on that very night itself.

Lancome NEW Maqui Miracle Compact Foundation & Ombre Absolue Impact 3D Palette

Two weeks ago, I was cordially invited to preview Lancome latest compact foundation - Maqui Miracle Natural Brightening Creator Compact Foundation SPF 35 / PA +++. This new 12-hour lasting Maqui Miracle Compact will be officially launched on 1st March 2011.

The event was held at Cafe Fables / Bar Stories at Haji Lane. This second level cozy cafe was chosen for its natural sunlight that shines into the small hall. As light plays an important role on how our skin appears – Aura of Skin – therefore the natural light will allow us to pick the right shade for our skin tone.

During the event, we were also delighted to preview Lancome’s four latest eye colors from Ombre Absolue Impact 3D Palette, Blanc Expert Melanolyser Whiteness Activating Spot Eraser, two new lip colors from both L’absolu Creme de Brillance and L’absolu Rouge.

Maqui Miracle Natural Brightening Creator Compact Foundation SPF 35 / PA +++ – S$65

Case – S$27

After its recent launch of Teint Miracle Liquid Foundation (S$65) and Teint Miracle Perfecting Corrector Pen (S$56) in October 2010, Lancome once again proudly presents its innovative Miracle extension – Maqui Miracle Compact Foundation.

Click here to read my review on Teint Miracle.

The Maqui Miracle Natural Brightening Creator Compact Foundation (S$65) and the case (S$27) are sold separately.

Using similar technology as Teint Miracle, Maqui Miracle recreates the true inner lights of a perfect skin.

Research has demonstrated that light is not only reflected on the surface. It is also naturally re-emitted from deep within the skin. It is believed that 5% is reflected but 95% penetrates skin (epidermis and dermis) and which 55% is absorbed and 40% is re-emitted at the surface.

Surface Radiance + Inner Light = AURA of SKIN

Are you aware that natural radiance is unique to each individual because every skin comes with their own AURA and quality of skin (eg : excessive melanin) will affect the AURA too.

Do you know melanin will cause skin to look beige? When light penetrates skin, melanin absorbs the bluish light and light turns more beige-ochre. Similarly as one ages, there is more melanin that eats away more of the blue light, therefore the skin will appear more beige than before too.

Likewise for haemoglobin, when light penetrates skin, it will transforms into a pinkish radiance because haemoglobin absorb yellow, green and blue lights. The more irregular the skin, the more intense the pink color. As one ages, micro-circulation slows down and pink loses its intensity.

Are you already bored with all these skin technology terms? Just bare with me a little while and I will be done pretty soon. ;-)

Maqui Miracle Compact comes in 8 Asian-specific shades. It comprises of cool, neutral or warm color harmony.

Maqui Miracle Compact provides three breakthough discoveries to recreate your inner light radiance and a natural, shine-free and brightening translucent finish :

Brightness For All Day Long

Lancome has decoded skin’s inner light and recreates it with three light and pigments.

  • Light System contributes to the diffusion of light to reveal the vibrant translucency of a fresh pure complexion.
  • Optic Pink Pigment (Berry Pink) generates a pinkish light that corrects dullness to allow a natural healthy looking glow by diminishing yellowness. Skin will appear more transparent, luminous and vividness.
  • Optic Blue Pigment (Radiance Blue) generates a bluish light that neutralizes yellow tones and reinforces the appearance of complexion freshness and purity. It helps to achieve a radiance and crystalline clear skin tone.
Long-Lasting (12-Hour) Sweat & Sebum Proof

Are you having problem with your foundation such as the color turns darker, yellowish or comes out due to pigments that are affected by sebum? Now you can worry no more! Maqui Miracle Compact is recreated with a 12H Long Lasting + Shine Resist. It is made possible with the help of :

  • Hybrid Bowl Filler absorbs large amount of sebum.
  • Hydrophobic powder has a high resistance to color change.

With these innovative agents, sebum and sweat are absorbed and yellow dullness is gone. And you can now says HI! to 12 hours non fading translucent finish.

Poreless Smooth, Even Finish

Maqui Miracle Compact contains Soft Powder Complex that helps to eliminate the look of enlarged pores and therefore skin becomes smoother and even.

Guest Blogger Dr. Irwin – Comparing Wrinkle Products

Wrinkles are a common problem to nearly all middle-aged men and woman. Anti-aging, wrinkle creams, and repair products go by several names and come in a number of different categories. I have handpicked my favorites from a number of different product lines to help you sort through all of the confusing hype. Here are the ones that I recommend:

Retinols or Vitamin A cousins

1. Retinol Complex by SkinMedica – $53 US
This retinol also has vitamin E in a light base that will not clog pores and is still compatible with moisturizers and sunscreens. Retinols are another type of repair cream that have science behind them. They build collagen and normalize sun damaged keratinocytes (skin cells). And if this product irritates your skin a little, try applying your moisturizer first, then wait 10-20 minutes, then apply this.

2. La Roche Posay Biomedic Retinol 30 and 60 - $54 US & $57 US
Another very good over-the counter retinol, also compatible with moisturizers and sunscreens. This product actually contains three forms of retinol plus vitamin E in a light base that will not clog pores and is still compatible with moisturizers and sunscreens. Start with the 30 and work up to the 60 if you tolerate it well. Wait 60-90 days for results. And if this product irritates your skin a little, try applying your moisturizer first, then wait 10-20 minutes, then apply this.

Antioxidants, peptides, alpha hydroxy creams

1. SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic – $142 US
C E Ferulic is an antioxidant combination that delivers protection against photoaging – neutralizing free radicals, helping build collagen, and providing antioxidant protection. More protection means more youthful looking skin and better defense against sun damage. 15% pure L-ascorbic acid and 1% alpha tocopherol, the addition of ferulic acid (a plant based antioxidant) doubles the synergism. Similar to the Phloretin CF.

2. SkinCeuticals Serum 10 or 20 AOX+ (Vitamin C) – $84 US & $116 US
Good basic Vitamin C serums. Use under your sunscreen. 20% is more effective but try the 10% first if your skin is sensitive at all. If your skin in thicker or on the normal to oily side, the 20% concentration may be fine for you. Some of the SkinCeuticals serums can be a little tacky under makeup. You can use it at night if that bothers you.

3. SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF – $152 US
One of the best antioxidant serums on the market in my opinion. Contains Vitamin C 10% with 2% phloretin and .5% ferrulic acid which together are more effective than either individually. Not irritating but may be too much for the very sensitive. Potent and best with normal to oily skin. Wash, let skin dry for a minute or two, apply and use sunscreen on top. If you need a moisturizer, use it over the serum. And it’s good for melasma and brown spots.

4. SkinCeuticals C + AHA – $130 US
Good antioxidant for acne prone and oily skin because it contains 15% Vitamin C plus 10% alpha hydroxy (glycolic and lactic) which help to keep skin exfoliated and pores unclogged. In a serum which is not oily. Not for sensitive skin. Use after washing but let skin dry first. Sunscreen in the morning over it.

5. Topix Replenix Cream or Gel – $47.95 & $54 US
This is a powerful antioxidant containing 90% polyphenol extracts of green tea. It is gentle and good for all but the most sensitive skin. Many of our patients who find the serums with Vitamin C too irritating, can use this product without problems. This cream version is best for normal to dry skin. Use the Gel if you are oily or have acne prone skin. Good for easily irritated, sensitive skin.

6. NeoStrata Ultra Smoothing Lotion or Cream 10 AHA – $27 & $32 US
This light, nongreasy lotion helps keep the skin smooth and to reverse sun damage by building collagen and speeding natural exfoliation. Use a small amount over entire face. Good choice for teens to early 30s. Budget saver. This lotion is better than the Ultra Smoothing Cream if your skin is quite oily and acne prone. Use the cream if you have dry skin.

Cell growth factors

1. SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum - $237.50 US
I have to confess I love this product. I wish I could bathe in it, but it’s too expensive. It’s the first “double pump” product I’ve seen that works well. You press the plunger and it dispenses your cell growth factor serum (TNS Recovery — the reddish one) AND your antioxidant and peptide mix at the same time. All in just the right amount. There are 7 different antioxidants so it’s hard to compare it with other antioxidant serums (7 is not always better than 1). Has some weak plant based skin lighteners. The effects of the two products together are good and it’s efficient to use. Expensive but worth it, in my opinion.

2. SkinMedical TNS Recovery Complex – $155
SkinMedica pioneered the use of cell growth factors (these are like fertilizers for your skin) with this TNS Recovery Complex. Rest assured, the current version has a better fragrance than the original. No product is a quick fix, so you need to give this 3 to 6 months to see results.

New products, such as anti-glycation creams

1. SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Interrupter – $150 US
A new group in the anti-aging arsenal. You’ll see more of these in the coming months and years. A good idea but I think the jury is still out as to how effective these are in the skin of real women rather than a petri dish. A.G.E. Interrupter is formulated to improve the crepey appearance of mature skin caused by intrinsic aging processes such as glycation. This goes well under Renova at night or you could use it over TNS recovery, for example, in the morning in place of a moisturizer with sunscreen over that. Glycation occurs when excess glucose molecules stick to collagen and elastin fibers, eventually binding them together and leading to the formation of Advanced Glycation End-products (A.G.E.). Glycated collagen and elastin fibers lose the ability to function normally, and the body cannot break them down and replace them, which may contribute to wrinkling of the skin. This is particularly true in diabetics. It is formulated with 4% blueberry extract, 30% proxylane, and 0.2% phytosphingosine to help prevent the glycation process in mature skin. Expensive but may be worth it.

Visit to read more or buy any of the products mentioned above. You can also take my Skin Care Test to see which products I recommend for your unique skin profile: and watch this video for how to properly apply skin care products:

And most importantly, don’t forget that sun exposure is the number 1 reason for signs of aging in the skin, including wrinkles. So make sure to use a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen every single day!

Embark On A 10-Day Weight-Loss Challenge With AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto

Three weeks ago, you probably have read my review on AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto, a low-calorie nutritious meal replacement. Click here to read my full review on AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto.

In the span of one week, I have completed a box of AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto (S$36) that consists of 5 flavours in it. I have actually lost 1kg – from 52kg to 51kg! In fact, this is something I have never expected and I was quite surprised with the result!

And now after all those non-stop snacking and indulging in sumptuous feasts during Chinese New Year, I have put on a little weight to 51.5kg. Well, I’m not worried at all as I’m going to embark on a weight-loss challenge and say goodbye to those extra weights again!

Thank you AFC Japan for extending this challenge to me. ;-)

10-Day Weight-Loss Challenge

In fact this is my first dietary challenge and I’m very excited about it. In this 10-day challenge, I’m going to replace my heaviest meal (usually dinner) with one pack/flavour of AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto for 10 days consecutively. And for the rest of my meals, I will eat as per normal.

As each box of AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto (S$36) contains 5 pouches (in 250g), one with each delicious flavour, I will therefore need to complete two boxes of Risotto.

Here are the summary of each flavours :

Tomato with Basil - it contains chucks of carrot and celery in tomato sauce. Taste like pasta with a hint of basil.

Mediterranean Seafood - it contains small bites of Japanese scallop and Japanese littleneck clam. Taste a little like clam chowder.

Curry Stew - it contains small bites of chicken and I actually adore this non-spicy Japanese curry taste. It has high vegetable content.

Cream of Mushroom - it contains small bites of mushrooms and potatoes with a light creamy sauce.

Assorted Cheese - High cheesy taste as it makes from four cheese (Parmesan, Cheddar, Gouda, Gorgonzola).

How AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto Can Help To Lose Weight

Most of the time, when we consume more calories than what our body can use up, the body stores the excess calories as fat. So in order to have a successful weight loss, it is best when there is a reduction in calories consumed and also an increase in physical activity too.

AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto, a low-calorie nutrient-dense meal replacement, controls calorie intake by reducing food portions while keeping us satiated. With an average of 150kcal only per pouch, it actually provides sufficient sense of fullness, thanks to the secret ingredient Konjac. Each pack of Risotto is mixed with full grain white rice and low-calorie Konjac that is made from Japanese Konnyaku potato which has a similar texture to rice.

Therefore for a long-term weight reduction, it is advisable to replace the heaviest meal of the day with AFC Chef’s Diet Risotto.

Can I Lose More Weight in 10 Days?

Well, based on my previous successful weight loss with Risotto, which I’ve managed to lost 1kg after completed 5 pouches within a week and now for this 10-day challenge, I’m wondering if I can lose more weight than before? How much will I lose from my present weight at 51.5kg? Will I successfully complete the course?

I’m very determined to lose more weight as I would like to prove to myself and everyone of us that I can make it. YES!!

Excited to know the result? Therefore do stay tuned for my upcoming result post after my 10-day challenge. I can’t wait to see the result too. See you soon! ;-)

Review – Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream (Vitamin A)

Have you heard of Tretinoin? Well Tretinoin, commonly known as Vitamin A, Retin A or Retinoids, is an potent antioxidant that is proven to help stimulate new collagen production, reduce pigmentation, remove fine lines and wrinkles.

I have bought this prescripted Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream more than a year ago at National Skin Centre. You probably will ask, why was I not using it till now? Well, Vitamin A and its derivatives is claimed to cause birth defects and I have to avoid it at all cost as I was trying for a baby during the last two years. After unsuccessful pregnancy till now, I decided to start using it.

Click here to learn more about Vitamin A.

My First Encounter With Tretinoin

In fact, many years back I have actually tested Tretinoin and it was of a different brand (can’t remember the brand). I first started Tretinoin with the lowest strength at 0.01%. I was recommended by the doctor to start with the lowest percentage to see if I can tolerate the product well before I can gradually increase the strength. As 0.01% is the mildest strength and it also means it has the lowest skin irritancy as compare to the higher strength, I didn’t get to see any result at all.

Therefore after using the lowest strength 0.01% for a few months, I decided to switch to a much higher strength at 0.025%, hoping to see a more obvious result. As there was no skin irritation occurred even after a few months usage, I took the courage to increase the strength further to 0.05%. Anyway, the highest strength available is 0.1%.

In fact, Tretinoin can be too irritating for many people and may not be suitable for all people. The most common irritations are skin dryness, redness and flaking.

My skin couldn’t take the higher strength at 0.05% and I encountered skin irritation. I have mild flaking all over the face, my skin was extremely dry, I felt tingling sensation after application and the corner of my lips bled. All-in-all, it was too drying for my skin! Hence, I stopped using it barely after two months.

Vitamin A & Hydroquinone

Lately, I have read a couple of beauty books by doctors and most of them (almost all) have highly recommended the readers to use Tretinoin (also known as Retin A or Vitamin A) to help stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity and fight wrinkles.

Experts have claimed that when Vitamin A mixes with Hydroquinone (a bleaching ingredient), both will enhance the removal of pigment or brown spots on the skin.

Dr Brooke Rutledge Seckel, M.D., author of Save Your Face, has claimed that “Combining Retinol 0.3% with Hydroquinone 4% is effective in resolving fine lines, pigment and improving skin texture.”

Paula Begoun, author of Don’t Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me, has also claimed that “When tretinoin is used in combination with hydroquinone, skin discolorations can show a far more noticeable and impressive improvement.”

Click here to read more about the great combination of Vitamin A and hydroquinone….

Giving Tretinoin A Second Chance!

After realizing the goodness of this combination, I decided to mix my current hydroquinone product Paula’s Choice Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion (with 2% hydroquinone and 7% AHA) with Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream to see if both are used together could treat the stubborn dark spots on my right cheek area.

In addition, as I was hoping to eliminate fine lines on my forehead and nasolabial folds, improve my skin elasticity and increase collagen production, I therefore decided to give prescription Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream a shot again.

Review on Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream

Hyperpigmentation has always been one of my major skin problems and I have been painstakingly finding ways to treat it. There is this fairly obvious melasma on the right cheek area that has been causing me a headache. I have been finding solutions to eliminate this melasma but to no avail. I have tried various lasers and treatments but they do not seem to help lighten the dark spots at all.

A week after using Paula’s Choice Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion (with 2% hydroquinone and 7% AHA) with Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream, I was glad to notice superficial improvement on the melasma, the stubborn dark spots seem lighter. But the “happiness” didn’t last long anyway and after continuously using both products for a month, I was shocked to find the melasma (on the right cheek) has gotten even darker than before. There was redness on the areas applied too. I kept asking myself why??

Beauty Questions? Ask Dr. Irwin
- Sun Protection 101

Reader’s Question

Dear Dr Irwin,

I would like to ask about sun protection:
1) What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays, and is one more detrimental to the skin than the other? How do we know if we are exposed to more UVA or UVB rays? (e.g. does it depend on seasons or weather, or being indoors or outdoors?)
2) I have heard of chemical sunscreens and mineral sunscreens, what is the difference? Is any one more superior to the other?
3) Regarding SPF, is it that a higher SPF offers MORE EFFECTIVE coverage (i.e. against stronger sun’s rays) or longer HOURS of coverage?
4) If one is working indoors most of the time (or outdoors, whichever is the case), is there any difference in the type of sunscreen one should be using/purchasing (e.g. look for different types of ingredients in the sunscreen)?

Thank you.

Dr. Irwin’s Answer

1) What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays, and is one more detrimental to the skin than the other? How do we know if we are exposed to more UVA or UVB rays? (e.g. does it depend on seasons or weather, or being indoors or outdoors?)

UVB is a shorter ultraviolet wave than UVA.  UVB damages the outer layer (the epidermis) more whereas UVA travels deeper into the skin (the dermis) and damages the deeper layers more.  Both UVA and UVB are rays of natural light which you are exposed to everything time you are outdoors. Please see:

2) I have heard of chemical sunscreens and mineral sunscreens, what is the difference? Is any one more superior to the other?

Chemical sunscreens work by binding to the cells themselves and mineral sunscreens work by providing a barrier of invisible protective particles that bounce light back so UV waves won’t penetrate the skin.  Generally, mineral sunscreens in the right percentages are superior because they don’t degrade as much in exposure to light.

3) Regarding SPF, is it that a higher SPF offers MORE EFFECTIVE coverage (i.e. against stronger sun’s rays) or longer HOURS of coverage?

The FDA is coming out soon (probably 2012) with the requirement that products have an SPF (which we have now and only refers to the amount of UVB coverage) as well as a # that will explain the amount of UVA coverage (which is more easily said than done).  Look for sunscreens that are at least SPF 30 and that say ‘broad spectrum’.  Best are sunscreens that contain 5-20% zinc which blocks both UVA and UVB — and the higher the percentage the better.

4) If one is working indoors most of the time (or outdoors, whichever is the case), is there any difference in the type of sunscreen one should be using/purchasing (e.g. look for different types of ingredients in the sunscreen)?

If you work indoors, you aren’t exposed to UVA or UVB unless you have a desk near a window. UVA goes through window glass, which includes your car windows and windshield unless you have put in special window protection. Here is a list of sunscreens I recommend :

Clarins NEO Pastels Spring Make-Up Collection, Instant Smooth Line Correcting Concentrate, Wonder Volume Mascara & New Extra Firming Foundation

A week ago, I have received an unexpected surprised parcel from Clarins Singapore. In the bag it contains two bottles of new Extra Firming Foundations and a set of NEO Pastels Spring Makeup Collection that comprises of Eye Colour & Liner Palette, Blush Prodige, Rouge Hydra Nude (2 shades), Joli Rouge Brillant, Wonder Volume Mascara and Instant Smooth Line Correcting Concentrate.

I was very excited upon receiving the parcel. My first impression was WOW!! OM! The colors are so lovely and I couldn’t wait to try them all! Thanks Clarins Singapore, Muack!

Clarins proudly presents

NEO Pastels Spring Makeup Collection

Limited Edition

NEO Pastels Eye Color & Liner Palette – S$72

These six lovely eyeshadows remind me of a watercolour palette! You can actually mix and match from three monochrome shades – browns, pinks and violets – to create the look you prefer. The specially designed texture can be applied dry for a more subtle make-up look, or with a damp applicator for a more intense result. To enhance make-up and give eyes more depth, a black eyeliner is included in the palette. This NEO Pastels palette comes with a double applicator – a foam end for eye shadow and a brush end for the eyeliner.

Clarins Make-Up Artist Advice

One, two or three shades? Anything is possible! Apply a single shade and a stroke of eyeliner for simple quick make-up, or two or three colors for a more sophisticated look.

For example :

  • Beige over the top eyelid, brown at the outer corner and golden pink above the eyelid crease.
  • Light pink over the eyelid, violet at the outer corner and lilac above the eyelid crease.

I have created my first Spring Look Of The Day (no mascara yet) with golden pink over the eyelid, violet at the outer corner and light pink above the eyelid crease. Do you like my color combination?

I have also use the brush end of the double applicator to create the eyeliner. The brush applicator is pretty soft and it doesn’t hurt or pull the skin around the delicate eye areas. Even though I’m not a makeup pro but I do find it pretty easy to use and I manage to draw a perfect line using the brush tip.

The eyeshadow texture is super soft and fine, I really love it!

Wonder Volume Mascara

This Wonder Volume Mascara comes in one shade only – 01 Wonder Black. Pretty nice sleek packaging though.

I actually like this mascara as it perfectly coats and thickens my lashes for an ultimate volume without feeling sticky nor heavy. It doesn’t pull down my lashes which is good. My lashes immediately lengthen after one stroke of application! It doesn’t smudge and is long-lasting!

New Blush Prodige Illuminating Cheek Color – S$52

This new Blush Prodige comes with 6 sumptuous complementary shade pairs to give the cheekbones both color and light. A matte shade to sculpt the face and an iridescent one to highlight facial contours as it catches the light.

This new generation Blush Prodige has an extremely lightweight silky texture that includes mineral pigments and plant extracts – bamboo powder and tomato extract – to achieve a radiant, healthy glow. This excellent texture delivers endless color variations, with luminous, long-lasting results and an even, natural make-up look.

I have received shade 01 Lovely Rose. This shade is extremely suitable for my fair-looking skin. As the palette actually comes in 4 complementary shades, I can choose individual shade to highlight or contour my cheekbone area or blend altogether for a natural glow.

I love the silky soft texture and the natural radiant look!

To believe or not to believe

In the field of dermatology, skin discoloration is one of the most difficult conditions to solve. The medically sanctioned ingredient to tackle the problem is called hydroquinone. It works by inhibiting the manufacture of new pigment cells. However, it doesn’t do anything for dark spots once they’ve appeared. Pigment cells have about a six-week life span, after which they break down and are replaced by new cells. So if hydroquinone is prescribed, and the formation of some of the new pigment cells is inhibited, dark spots may fade from your complexion over time. The typical prescription dose of hydroquinone is 4 percent, but even at that strength it is only moderately effective. Sometimes, combined with glycolic acid, its effectiveness improves a bit, but I have yet to speak with a patient who was completely satisfied with the outcome of any prescription fading cream.

So why, you may ask, isn’t hydroquinone prescribed in a higher strength?

The answer is that if the percentage is increased it becomes very irritating. It’s a classic case of damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Hydroquinone, by law, cannot be sold over-the-counter in more than 2 percent strength. So you see, if it works only moderately at 4 percent strength, it’s no wonder that the high-priced department store brand creams with only half the power are not effective. This time, as I said, the cosmetics industry can’t be held entirely at fault.

Secrets For Ageless Skin

February 11 –
Beauty tip of the month

Beautiful skin is a reflection of health that encompasses a person’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The foundation – the base of the pyramid – is the absence of disease. When illness or injury does occur, prompt, state-of-the-art treatment is imperative, for without a solid healthy foundation, everything else is weakened.

A sense of well-being, the next level of the pyramid, is a balance between the many aspects of your emotional life and a healthy, self-caring lifestyle. It includes having passion and caring in your life, reducing isolation with strong connections to other people, intimate relationships, a loving attitude that’s free of hostility and anger, and a feeling of satisfaction that you’re using your talents well. Self-caring means that you treat your body with respect: you exercise, get enough sleep, and take time to relax.
