The Benefits Of Sunscreen With Vitamin A, C & E

Sun protection is nevertheless the most important yet most often neglected anti-aging and cancer preventing treatment you can use.

Sun block alone is not enough. New research indicates that the addition of topical antioxidants like Vitamins A, C and E significantly increase the protection from the harmful effects of sunlight above and beyond the protection afforded by sun block alone. These antioxidants neutralise the free radicals triggered by UV rays, preventing them from causing skin aging and darkening.

There is also increasing evidence that vitamin C shields the skin from the sun’s burning rays, especially when it’s applied in high concentrations or combined with vitamin E, sunscreens, and skin soothers.

Review – Can Kiehl’s Line Reducing Eye-Brightening Concentrate Reduce My Dark Circles?

I’ve managed to obtain 2 packets of Kiehl’s Line Reducing Eye-Brightening Concentrate 5ml samples while I was shopping for Kiehl’s products the other day.

Kiehl’s Line Reducing Eye-Brightening Concentrate, with 10.5% Pure Vitamin C and Haloxyl, is said to help decreases the appearance of crows feet and sub-orbital wrinkles. Visibly brightens the eye area and minimizes dark circles.

Product claims

This line-reducing concentrate is formulated for the eye area and contains a high concentration of 10.5% Pure Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) known for its affinity with skin and its powerful ability to improve the appearance of skin aging. With Haloxyl, this formula helps to reduce the appearance of under-eye dark circles, helping to brighten the overall eye area for a fresher appearance. With continued use, our treatment helps address some of the more serious signs of skin aging with a significant effect on sub-orbital wrinkles and crows feet.

One of its key ingredient, Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) with content in 10.5%, is known to help for the production of collagen and elastin. This antioxidant ingredient also prevents water loss and therefore maintains the skin’s barrier function. Instability is the main setback for this beneficial ingredient, which can be irritating to the skin. That is why some doctors believe it is not recommended to use around the eye area.

Haloxyl, a new patented key ingredient, is claimed to improve skin around the eye area by stimulating natural enzymes that help strengthen under-eye area capillaries.

Kiehl’s Line Reducing Eye-Brightening Concentrate also contains skin irritant ingredient like Bitter Orange Flower Extract, which oil is extracted from the petal of the bitter orange tree and is claimed to be effective at stimulating cutaneous tone.

What puzzled me most when I first encountered with Kiehl’s Line Reducing Eye-Brightening Concentrate, is this hot burning sensation I felt on my eye area. It is quite weird and scary in fact. This sensation, which lasts for a few minutes each time, gradually diminishes after 2 weeks. Till now, I’m still wondering what is the cause of it.

Occasionally, I will also encounter some temporary skin itchiness around the eye area. I believe it may be due to the instability of Vitamin C or skin-irritant ingredients in it.

As Kiehl’s Line Reducing Eye-Brightening Concentrate is considered a serum to me, I will top up with lightweight eye cream over it.

After a month of usage : I have noticed the fine lines especially below my eyes area have insignificantly reduced. Fine lines appear softer, skin becomes firmer and tone. But as for crow’s feet and dark eye circles, sad to say there’s only very faint improvement on them.

Will I buy it? Maybe

Review – Paula’s Choice 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Gel, My Excellent Exfoliant!

You will probably be asking what is alpha hydroxy acid? What can it benefit to your skin? Well scientifically, alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) is considered one of the most effective exfoliating ingredient ever used in cosmetics nowadays. Therefore, Paula’s Choice 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Gel is nevertheless my favourite daily home-care exfoliant I have used so far.

What is alpha hydroxy acid?

Alpha hydroxy acid, derived from various plant sources (fruit, milk, etc), is a exfoliating acids that includes glycolic, lactic, malic and fruit acids.

Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) exfoliates skin cells by breaking down the substance in skin that holds skin cells together. But AHA may irritate mucous membranes and cause irritation for some people.

Studies have shown that one of the most effective ways to exfoliate is with an 8% to 10% AHA products every night. To be frank with you, it is in fact not easy to find the correct AHA concentration home-care skin care products in the market.

To be truly effective, a 8% or more is required to see result. No point going for anything less than 8%. Although there are many products in the market that claimed to contain AHA, but with the low percentage (usually 2%), it is just another skin-care conspiracy lie. You may think you are doing the right thing for your skin and you achieve nothing or very little.

Sun protection is important

Because AHAs exfoliate sun-damaged skin from the surface of the skin and because this layer imparts some sun protection for skin, there is a risk of increased sun sensitivity after using an AHA. However, wearing a sunscreen eliminates this risk.

Product claims

Paula’s Choice 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Gel exfoliates dry layers and reveal beautifully smooth, healthy skin with this state-of-the-art, lightweight gel. Ideal for all skin types, but works especially well on sun-damaged skin.

Paula’s Choice 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Gel, for all skin type, has definitely helped to exfoliate and improve my skin tone effectively. I could immediately see the result after 2 weeks of nightly usage.

During the first few applications, my skin could feel some slight sting which last for a few minutes. I believe is indicating that the product is working.

I have, in fact, not been having my regular microdermabrasion treatment soon after using this product. The great merit about this product is that I can see a great improvement on my rosacea, skin is definitely less red and sensitive. Now my skin is more evenly tone, clearer, smoother and pores are refined.

I can tell my skin is very happy with this product. Every night, I’m always looking forward for this step of daily skin-care regimen. Needless to say, Paula’s Choice 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Gel is definitely a great find!

(can really go crazy without it!)

Will I buy this again? Definitely YES YES YES!!!

Treatment Review – My Painful Experience With 1st Generation Thermage

I have always troubled with my nasolabial folds and marionette lines for many years. These signs of aging are due to insufficient protection against the sun in my 20s, extreme stress and severe insomnia which I’ve suffered for a year.

These facial aging, nasolabial folds (the fold of skin hanging down around the mouth) and marionette lines (the skin that fall down over the corner of the mouth and chin), make me look much older than I should. So early last year, I began to do some research on the best remedy through internet, press and feedback from my dermatologist.

At first I couldn’t decide between Titan and Thermage for skin tightening. I have in fact tried Titan treatment once many years ago when it was considered a fairly new machine at that time but no tightening result was shown.

So after analyzing the pros and cons on both treatments, I finally decided on Thermage as the most ideal choice to treat my problems.

Why I choose Thermage from Titan

Based on the research : Only 1 treatment is required for Thermage, whilst Titan requires at least 3 treatments in order to see results.

Thermage is able to burn fats, therefore able to contour my chubby face and reduce the double chin.

The cost factor : As most doctors are charging Thermage @$5k to $6k, and Titan @$1.5k to $2.5k. So after calculation, if 3 treatments are required for Titan, in total I will have to spend more on Titan to see result.

Dr Valentin Low Aesthetic and Laser Clinic

I’ve gotten to know Dr Valentin Low Aesthetic and Laser Clinic at Paragon through Beauty Shines Through – a website created by Allergan, where you can find a list of well-known doctors in Singapore.

My first encounter

What I remembered most on my first consultation session with Dr Valentin Low is that he gave me a feeling of confidence and assurance. His consultation was pretty convincing I must say. He painted a beautiful picture and told me not to worry too much and leave everything to him as he can achieve miracle for me. And he was very confident that these lines will be disappeared effortlessly.

My bad experience

It was a painful experience for me, in term of monetary and physically.

In fact, the first generation Thermage is considered the most painful non-invasive treatment I have tried so far. It was unbearable! It was so painful, I almost surrendered half way through the treatment. I couldn’t see any results unfortunately! Those who have tried the first generation Thermage will agree that it is really painful.

A month later….

I went back to the clinic for a review appointment a month after the treatment. Skin is overall firmer; eyelids are tightened, less puffy and sagging. But the major disappointments are the nasolabial folds and marionette lines, no visible improvement on these worried lines at all. He assured me that I will be able to see better results in the next couple of months time. In order to cheer me up further, he offered to give me ‘little’ complimentary treatments to tighten up my skin – ‘his trademark’ Gold-Threading (only on my cheek area) plus fillers injections (on my cheek bones), all FOC.

Immediately, I was able to see some superficial improvement with the Gold-Threading treatment. But sad to say, this ‘happiness’ was short-lived, the result barely lasted even 3 months.

3 to 6 months down the road….

Subsequently, I’ve visited him twice again, once on 3rd month and 6th month after the first treatment. Still no improvement at all. As expected, he convinced me that he can see the differences between before and after. He turned down my request when I asked for a ‘touch-up’ thermage session again. He advised it is risky for repeated thermage treatment within a year.

Research has shown that the result for first generation thermage treatment could only last for a year.

So for me, as expected, I still see no result after a year. I really felt so painful to spend my $6k hard-earned savings in this way. :-(

Will I try again? Probably for eyelid rejuvenation only

[Update @ 14 Dec 2014] Fortunately, Thermage has gone through a few generations and the latest Thermage is Total Tip. In fact, I’ve tested all the generations including the newest Total Tip. It’s definitely less painful and I could see the results instantly. Just a few weeks ago, I’ve my second Total Tip treatment at another clinic! :D Can’t wait to review it soon! By the way, Dr Valentin Low’s clinic also provides the latest Thermage Total Tip. The first generation Thermage is long gone!

Review – I Use Sisley Botanical Facial Mask With Tropical Resins For My Acne

Sisley Botanical Facial Mask With Tropical Resins, created specially for combination to oily skin, is one product I will never buy on my own. Not because the product is no good but it’s just that I hardly have a chance to use it anyway.

At the moment, I’ve been using the 15ml size sample which I obtained from one of the bundle set promotion a while ago. As I’m having a normal to dry skin, this mask is definitely not ideal to apply on the whole face. Hence, the 15ml sample can actually last me for a long long time.

Product claims

A purifying, clarifying mask which visibly improves the appearance of oily and problem skin. Incorporating the purifying, clarifying and astringent properties of Myrrh, Incense and Benzoin, Facial Mask with Topical Resins addresses the problems of oily, problem skin.

In order to tackle oily skin, Sisley Botanical Facial Mask With Tropical Resins contains clay ingredients with absorbent properties like kaolin and bentonite. It also contains many skin irritants ingredients which include styrax benzoin resin extract, boswellia carterii extract, commiphora myrrha extract, eugenol, amyl cinnamal, linalool and fragrance. In fact, these skin irritants may actually worsen the skin even for oily skin too.

Sisley Botanical Facial Mask With Tropical Resins is my SAVIOUR whenever I have acne.

To treat the acne, all I need is to apply a small amount of the mask (approx. size of a rice grain) to the specified spot and making sure to cover up the surrounding of the acne as well. Usually I will prefer to do it at night and leave it on till the next morning. Depending on the condition of the acne, I may required to use it again on the following day for more stubborn one.

Sisley Botanical Facial Mask With Tropical Resins helps to dry up the treated skin effectively and allow the dried dead skin to peel off naturally by itself.

Although Sisley Botanical Facial Mask With Tropical Resins contains many skin irritant ingredients that can trigger skin, but so far I have not suffer any reaction from it. (maybe due to the tiny amount I’ve used haha!!)

Side note

Sisley Botanical Facial Mask With Tropical Resins can be extremely drying for most skin type even for oily skin too. Refrain from using on whole face or even daily. Instead, use it only on the targeted areas like acne spots and oily nose.

Will I buy it? …… Unlikely!
