See What I Got During This GSS

Although the Great Singapore Sale started only on 29th May, me being the ‘kiasu’ shopper, afraid of being too crowded on the first day; hoping to grab the best buy; happen to knock off work early………. blah blah blah (excuses excuses)………. did my warm-up shopping on the eve of GSS. <grin!>

In fact, it was a bliss shopping, not too crowded and I was able to purchase 2 items within an hour.

My first buy is a pair of silver wedges from PAZZION at Wisma Atria (#B1-09). These semi-casual 1.5″ wedges, with padded footbed for comfort, give me a good fit.

Usual price @S$63, after 50% off, discounted price @S$31.50 >>> TOTAL SAVINGS = S$31.50

I could have saved more if I have a Citibank or UOB credit card. Wisma Atria is giving an additional 10% off on top of the discounted price if you’re a Citibank or UOB credit card holder.

The second item is this soft leather wallet from Agnes B. I love its soft leather touch, 2 notes sections (one for notes, the other for receipt), lightweight, champagne gold color and the embossed STAR print.

Usual price @S$345, 10% off from Agnes B, follow by 10% for Takashimaya card member, discounted price @S$279.45 >>> TOTAL SAVINGS = S$65.55

Great Singapore Sale 2009

Hooray, GSS (Great Singapore Sale) is back again! I believe most of us will be rushing to town this weekend to do the once-a-year ‘CRAZIEST’ marathon. Are you the few who have actually done the ‘warm-up’ on these 2 days to avoid the maniac crowd? Smart you!! You probably have some good grab right?

To be frank, I have to admit I have been waiting for this great opportunity to buy some nice stuff which I’ve been eyeing for the longest time. Admit it if you are one of them too ! <smile>

Some tips to shop SMART :
1. Be as lightweight as possible
2. Take a day off to shop when is less crowded
3. The best time to shop – between 10am — 11.30am
4. Wear a flip-flop/slip-on shoes especially if you are shopping for shoes or pants
5. Wear a tank top and a comfy pants, you may just able to try on a coat without going to the fitting room
6. Leave your beautiful dangling accessories at home, these may inconvenient you unnecessary
7. Bring along a BIG recycled bag and dump in all new buys without carry numerous carriers which usually come in different sizes and most importantly without leaving all the bags on the floor when searching for good buy
8. Think of ‘HANDS-FREE’, eg : carry a recycled bag, sling bag (it definitely helps you to grab that very last piece from that Ah Lian standing beside you)
9. Plan your agenda before you set the route
10. Have your meal first (whether is lunch or dinner) before you start your shopping, as most eateries will be crowded and you do not want to waste your time on that

If YOU have other great tips, share with us too!

POLL! Vote for it.

Do you think this recession will affect the way people (or you) shop this year?

Best Treatment For Aging Neck

An aging neck can play a big part in making a person’s face look older. Many women will carefully protect their faces or possibly undergone some sort of facial rejuvenation and yet their necks show signs of significant sun damage.

The aging neck & treatments

The neck is easily damaged by sun exposure as the skin is much thinner than it is on parts of the face and its support structure is not as effective. It therefore ages more readily as a result of skin surface damage. As fat is lost from under the neck skin unsightly strands and bands of skin and muscle, often known as turkey necks, appear. Another manifestation of aging neck skin is a double chin, which is an excessive collection of fat.

The neck is especially prone to sagging and deep lines as a result of genetics, dramatic weight loss, or sun damage.

In terms of lines, it can have both vertical and horizontal ones.

The vertical ones occur as the result of wear and tear from muscle contractions and so can be eased by Botox injections. The horizontal ones, on the other hand, are the result of sun damage and genetics and so are not good candidates for Botox.

The only thing that can truly help severe sagging there is a neck lift by a plastic surgeon. But proceed with caution as they are not always permanent and can offer varying results.

Botox can provide a satisfactory but temporary alternative. It can relax the cords or bans that protrude from the neck that tend to sag with age and pull the neck downward. Once they are eased, unopposed upward muscular movement raises the neck, giving it the appearance of it being somewhat lifted.

Rejuvenation treatment of the aging neck is a very specialized area and you must ensure that your practitioner is qualified. Some treatments to these areas can cause unpredictable problems such as scarring, skin lightening and skin redness. Treatments that are safe to use on the neck and chest include some chemical peels, photo rejuvenation and laser treatment for brown patches and red veins.

IPL can work to improve sun damage and superficial wrinkles. Titan or Thermage can be also used to tighten the skin and diminish wrinkles.

Sun protection for the neck

Always remember that your neck and upper chest will influence how youthful you look; it is vital that you do not forget to protect and treat them with sun protection and rejuvenating creams.

Don’t forget to moisturize your neck.

If you do not have a special neck cream, you could use a regular moisturizer, although some doctors may find that treatments that can be used on the face may either not be used at all on the neck and chest or have to be modified for safety reasons.

Retinoids will reduce wrinkles and crepey texture. Renova is the most gentle, so I recommend it for the tender skin of the neck.

See a dermatologist as soon as you notice textural changes, like crepeyness. The earlier it’s treated, the better.

Review – BB Cream – Gowoonsesaang Brightening Balm SPF 30PA++

Lately, many Asian women have gone ga-ga on BB cream, also known as ‘blemish balm’ originated from Korea. Before, I have heard too much of BB cream and decided to try one instead. I bought Gowoonsesaang Brightening Balm SPF 30PA++ in a rush thinking it may help to cover the redness on the skin from laser resurfacing treatment, which I supposed to go on the following day but eventually I didn’t make it. Many reports have claimed that BB cream can do wonders by covering up acne, scars, blemishes, redness and dark eye circles. It acts like a foundation, concealer and moisturizer with sunscreen.

Gowoonsesang is No.1 cosmeceutical brand in Korea which established by 6 medical doctors (MD/Ph.D.), 43 dermatologists, 114 nurses and 110 medical estheticians with abundant clinic at experiences of treating over 300,000 patients since 1998.

Gowoonsesaang Brightening Balm SPF 30PA++, like most BB creams, only available in 1 shade and is suitable for most asian skin tones. At first, I was so afraid it will not match my natural fair skin but in fact I was wrong, it covers pretty well and I’m now quite pleased with the result. I remembered on my first application, it somehow seems darker than my skin tone and was a little disappointed at first. It partly due to my sub-conscious (no other shades to choose from) that is playing the trick. HAHA!!

Half face naked, half face with BB cream

I like the texture very much and it’s easily absorbed onto the skin. It gives a matt finish and a clearer, radiance look.

One thing I’m not comfortable about BB cream is that, it gives my skin a ‘heavy makeup’ look. (Ya, you probably will ask what am I talking about, it is a makeup product) HAHA!! Well, reason because I used to wear sheer foundation as I do not like heavy ‘makeup’. And now, I don’t even wear foundation at all, just loose powder on my face.

Other BB Creams

In fact, there are many BB creams available in the market to choose from. Below are a few popular brands to consider :

SCINIC Fine Control BB Cream  |  PureDerm 3 in 1 Beauty Magic BB Cream

Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream  |  Hanskin Caviar Gold BB Cream

Hanskin Premium Super Magic BB Cream  |  Super Magic BB Cream

Hanskin Glossy Magic BB Cream  |  Dr.Jart+ Original BB Cream Detox Healing Blemish Balm

Review – Shu Uemura Skin Purifier Cleansing Beauty Oil Premium A/I

It took me a while to decide before buying Shu Uemura Skin Purifier Cleansing Beauty Oil Premium A/I due to the high price as a cleansing oil. But eventually, I couldn’t resist it any longer after reading some good reviews on this well-received Shu Uemura Skin Purifier.

Choose the right one

Shu Uemura provides 6 different types of skin purifier cleansing oils which are created to suit different skin’s needs. So for my sensitive skin, I’ve chosen the Premium A/I, the first premium cleansing oil specifically made to soothe and care for fragile skin. A luxuriously rich texture to calm delicate sensitive and dry skin conditions.

Product claims

This cleansing oil with plant extracts, focuses on improving the texture of the skin, leaving the skin moisturized, nourished and more radiant looking. It removes impurities while providing holistic, soothing relief to fragilized skin to restore skin’s natural beauty.

The secret to Shu Uemura cleansing oil is protecting the skin’s delicate balance while removing make-up and impurities in a single step.

Shu Uemura believes liquid is best suited for cleansing, as it’s high affinity to the composition of impurities that accumulate in pores allow for a gentle yet effective cleansing without interrupting skin’s natural balance.

This mineral and corn oil-based liquid is after all quite standard. Although Shu Uemura Skin Purifier Cleansing Beauty Oil Premium A/I is formulated using a combination of oils like safflower oil, persea gratissima oil (avocado oil), jojoba seed oil, these selected oils do not necessary mean a optimum penetration of stubborn waxes and oils in waterproof mascara, foundation and lip color as its claim.

One merit point about Shu Uemura Skin Purifier Cleansing Beauty Oil Premium A/I is that it contains ingredients with good antioxidant properties like persea gratissima oil (avocado oil), arginine (amino acid) and tocopherol (vitamin E).

Although this cleansing oil is specially made for hyper sensitive skin, but it does contains skin-irritant ingredients like linalool and fragrance.

This watery oil-based liquid cleanser does a great job of cleansing away foundation, lipstick and dirt but not waterproof mascara. Although it is specially made for fragile skin, frankly I do not feel really safe using this product, knowing too well it contains harmful ingredients which may trigger my sensitive skin anytime.

Will I buy it again? …… I don’t think so!

Hence, instead of letting you waste your valuable money tracking down and purchasing products that wind up in the trash, it is important to read the ingredient labels to be sure that they’re doing what they’re supposed to do.

Darphin Aromatic Cares - help balance your skin conditions and restore a sense of well-being, critical to your inner and outer beauty.

Darphin Creams - help replenish moisture and deliver corrective and protective benefits to address your skin’s as well as current and future needs.

My Opinion (No hard feeling Darphin!)

Many of you may presume that using plant-extract ingredients is the best option for the skin in a long run. But frankly, I’m not into it.

Ironically, many people may think of natural ingredients as being less irritating, but scientifically, many ‘natural’ ingredients do have some risks to the skin especially those with sensitive skin. They may cause inflammation and require more preservatives due to the breakdown of the plant ingredients and the presence of fungi on the plant extracts.

If you have sensitive skin…..

Avoid these ingredients like lemon, lime, ylang ylang, lavender, eugenol, hydroxycitronelial, mint, cinnamic alcohol and sandalwood.

Cooltouch and Smoothbeam Lasers

The beams from the no-injury Cooltouch and Smoothbeam lasers stimulate new collagen under the skin by heating the fibroblasts, which over time thickens the underlying collagen structure – skin is literally being built up from the inside out. The laser energy is absorbed by the water content of the skin. The Cooltouch and Smoothbeam lasers, safe and effective collagen boosters, are used to soften stretch marks, scars, age lines and wrinkles. As these treatments have line-erasing and skin-firming benefits, it helps particularly performing around the eyes and mouth and on crinkled areas.

Tolerable pain is likely to be experienced with these types of laser because the skin is heated quite deeply. This can be overcome by the application of anaesthetic creams before lasers are used. The long-pulsed laser systems have to be cooled very efficiently in order to protect the skin surface from heat blisters, but if the cooling spray itself is not delivered at the correct time, it can lead to cold-induced blisters instead. Some reddening which fades after a few hours and faint markings in the treated areas can remain visible for a day or two afterward, but they can be easily concealed with makeup.

As these treatments are effective in minimizing acne scars. If you consistently go for a series of three to six treatments one month apart. Results are usually visible after three months and may eventually, last forever.

These non-invasive lasers cannot help severe ageing, loose skin, thread veins and red or brown face patches.

Cost : $800 onwards per 30 minutes session

Review – Olay Total Effects 7-In-1 Anti-Aging Cream

Previously, I used to shun off drugstore “anti-aging” products, but after reading some good reviews on products under Olay Total Effects 7-In-1 Anti-Aging range, so for the benefit of doubt, I intended to give a try on one of them.

Product claims

Olay Total Effects 7-In-1 Anti-Aging Cream works to fight against 7 of the major signs of aging. The 7 anti-aging benefits in 1 moisturizer are :

  1. Line Minimization : Reduces appearance of fine lines
  2. Nourishing Moisturization : Soothes dry skin
  3. Tone Enhancement : Evens skin tone
  4. Gentle exfoliation : Smoothes and evens skin texture
  5. Pore Refinement : Minimizes the appearance of pores
  6. Anti-oxidants : Helps protect skin’s moisture barrier
  7. Subtle Lifting : Hydrates for firmer skin appearance

My Opinion

One thing that puzzled me is that although Olay Total Effects 7-In-1 Anti-Aging Creams, which available in Singapore are manufactured in Thailand, imported in India but I don’t understand on why the ingredients are slightly different as compared to other parts of the world. Couldn’t they (P&G) make them consistent?

Having 7 anti-aging benefits are in fact very ‘attractive’ to the potential consumers. But frankly, most of the benefits are interlink, for example : gentle exfoliation not only helps to smooth and even skin texture but also help to minimize the appearance of pores. Nourishing moisturization not only soothes dry skin but also hydrates, protect skin’s moisture barrier and reduces the appearance of fine lines.

One of the plus points for this Olay Total Effects 7-In-1 Anti-Aging Cream is that it contains a handful of antioxidants like tocopheryl acetate, BHT, tocopherol and camellia sinensis leaf extract, which help to combat the free radicals, the major cause of skin aging.

Another good ingredient is niacinamide, water-soluble ingredient, that has been shown to increase ceramide and free fatty acid levels in skin, prevent skin from losing water content and stimulate micro-circulation in the dermis.

But it contains skin-irritants ingredients like benzyl alcohol and fragrance.

Although there is no SPF indication on the product, but it does contain some sunscreen ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

I like the texture as it doesn’t feel oily on my skin. Although my skin is more hydrated and tone, but there is no visible improvement on fine lines and firming.

I will consider Olay Total Effects 7-In-1 Anti-Aging Cream, for normal to dry skin, as a good moisturizer instead of a anti-aging cream.

I dislike the packaging so much!

Will I buy it again? …… Maybe!
