Review – Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Smoothing Treatment With 5% Alpha Hydroxy Acid

In the recent years, so many anti-aging products have been introduced in the market and to find the best anti-aging products that actually work for you is like looking for a needle in a haystack! Many products have somewhat similar and promising claims – Formulated with latest and greatest ingredients that can eliminate wrinkles and fine lines in 14 days!

Unfortunately, some of these so-called breakthrough ingredients are mostly antioxidants that can only effectively help to delay or prevent aging but they may not be able to reverse aging or make the wrinkles and fine lines disappear.

So what makes an anti-aging product ticks? Well, continue reading to find out more……

A couple of weeks ago, I was extremely delighted to receive a set of new Paula’s Choice anti-aging products for testing and review. Many thanks to Paula’s Choice Singapore for extending this review invitation to me. ;-)

Review – NEW SK-II Wrinkle Specialist

Two months ago in early July 2011, while I was attending an exclusive event at Changi Airport transit areas, I accidentally chanced upon 2 newest SK-II anti-aging products – SKII Wrinkle Specialist and Signature Eye Cream.

An exclusive media launch was held on the same afternoon at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 3 and I believe it was attended by media and VIP customers.

In fact, Changi Airport is proud to be the first in the world to launch these 2 newest anti-aging products. Even Japan has not even launched these 2 anti-aging products during the time. Since I couldn’t wait for the products to be available at department stores, I decided to buy the SK-II Wrinkle Specialist at Perfumes & Cosmetics store @ Changi Airport Terminal 3 at S$168 for testing and review. <grinning> I’m glad to be one of the first to try this anti-aging product. Anyway, both products have recently been officially launched and are now available at all SK-II counters @ department stores, retailing at S$180.

SK-II Anti-Aging Marketing Profile

Your skin has the natural ability to renew itself, an ability we call Skin Power. But like the sands of time, it slips away with age. SK-II’s latest anti-aging solutions are formulated especially to restore your Skin Power. use them daily as part of your skin care regimen and in years to come, you’ll discover that your biggest secret is no longer your age – it’s how you preserve your youthful-looking skin.

SK-II Wrinkle Specialist

Product Profile

Reduces the appearances of wrinkles by softening the skin. Your skin softens from the first time you apply it. Your wrinkles begin to disappear after just 14 days.

At first, after a quick glance at the ingredients, I was actually shocked to discover that this SK-II Wrinkle Specialist contains 4 alcohol ingredients (stearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol).

But only to realize that behenyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol are either used as an emollient and/or thickener. My bad!! <grin>

But benzyl alcohol (an irritating ingredient) on the other hand if it’s used in a high concentration, can cause problem for skin. It is known to increase free radicals, dry up the skin and cause skin irritation.

Pitera, the key ingredient for all SK-II products, can be found in SK-II Wrinkle Specialist that is claimed to be rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, organic acids and other natural ingredients beneficial to the skin.

SK-II Wrinkle Specialist also contains beneficial ingredients such as Vitamin B3, Carnosine and Tocopheryl Acetate.

Well, my first impression on SK-II Wrinkle Specialist is “Alright, since Kiehl’s, RoC, Boots, Tri-Aktiline and Babor have already created wrinkle fillers, so now you SK-II also wants a slice of the pie too? This is so predictable!”

SK-II Wrinkle Specialist is claimed to reduce the appearances of wrinkles by softening the skin and the wrinkles will begin to disappear after just 14 days! Begin to disappear in 14 days? Another by-default wrinkle claim again!

Review – Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum, No7 Lift & Luminate Eye Cream & No7 Lift & Luminate Day Cream SPF 15

Many months ago, I was supposed to review three BOOTS products which I have received from (managed by Boots Retail Thailand). And also to throw a giveaway on Boots products at the same time. So why am I taking so long to post this review? Well it is because Boots and I couldn’t agree on the giveaway mechanic and eventually I decided to post the review minus the giveaway.

At first, Boots Asia suggested that in order for the readers to participate for the giveaway, each of them will need to submit a photo of themselves with their favourite Boots product that work. The most creative picture wins. And Boots Asia has claimed that this is actually a simple mechanic. Well simple to them but not for my readers though! I was extremely turned off by the suggested mechanic as that will mean my readers will need to purchase a Boots product before they can participate on the giveaway. Why should my readers part their money just for the giveaway? And my email box will also be flooded with readers’ submission too. It’s too troublesome for me and my readers especially! It just doesn’t make any sense at all! What a stupid idea!

They later tweaked it a little by suggesting having my readers to capture a screenshot of a Boots product that they would like to try out and why. Well so what’s the different, this mechanic is as bad as the first!

Anyway, the three products that I will be reviewing are No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum, No7 Lift & Luminate Eye Cream and No7 Lift & Luminate Day Cream SPF 15.

But firstly, are you familiar with this UK brand BOOTS? If you’re not, click here for a brief description of the brand.

My Impression With BOOTS Products

I’ve noticed that one of the products I’ve received, it actually looks different from the ones found at UK website.

No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum

Product Profile

Reveal younger looking skin with No7 Protect & Perfect Beauty Serum. This powerful blend of protecting and renewing ingredients helps reduce the appearance of pores, smoothing lines and wrinkles in 4 weeks.

Although this silicone-based fragrance-free serum contains sodium ascorbyl phosphate (one of the less potent Vitamin C), retinyl palmitate (is Vitamin A but not retinol as claimed) and other antioxidants such as Vitamin E but unfortunately I couldn’t see any result at all.

Review – Kiehl’s Double Strength Deep Wrinkle Filler

In early 2011, Kiehl’s has once again launched a new innovative skincare product – Double Strength Deep Wrinkle Filler islandwide in Singapore.

Kiehl’s is considered one of the first few brands to have developed a wrinkle filler product. Other brands that have developed similar products are RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Filler, Boots Intensive Line Filler, Tri-Aktiline Instant Deep Wrinkle Filler and Babor Wrinkle Filler.

A month ago, I was delighted to receive a complimentary Kiehl’s Double Strength Deep Wrinkle Filler and it is the first and only wrinkle filler I’ve tested so far.

Frankly, I have been longing to try a wrinkle filler for a long time! An instant filler for my nasalabiol folds, marionette lines and crow’s feet without going under the knife! You will probably ask on why have I not tested other wrinkle fillers before? Well, there is no one product that has tempted me to do so. Kiehl’s is one of the reliable brands I have known and the product claim of this new Kiehl’s Wrinkle Filler is so convincing that I couldn’t resist anymore. In addition, I like the idea that it is FREE of fragrance, silicone and paraben.

Double Strength Deep Wrinkle Filler is the latest addition to the Dermatologist Solutions line.

Product Claim

Double Strength Deep Wrinkle Filler works instantly and over time without any silicones! Two types of Hyaluronic Acid provide double the wrinkle filling power instantly filling in wrinkles while also plumping and smoothing them over time.

The active ingredients are Sodium Hyaluronate Filling Spheres, Fragmented Hyaluronic Acid, Tensor Polymer and AD-1 Peptide.

Double Strength Deep Wrinkle Filler is claimed to contain potent blend of two types of extremely bio-compatible Hyaluronic Acids, plus polymers, peptides and silica to provide double the wrinkle filling power that instantly filling in, plumping and smoothing wrinkles.

Ironically, based on Beautypedia’s review, the two types of hyaluronic acids are barely present in the product to produce result. Well, as I’m still not very familiar with skincare ingredients, I have no idea if the claim is true! And according to the ingredient list, Sodium Hyaluronate and Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid are listed on the last and last third respectively which means the amounts are usually minuscule.

This wrinkle filler treatment contains alcohol (second on the ingredient list) which may cause dryness and irritation.

It is FREE of fragrance, silicone and paraben.

For the past few years, I have been painstakingly finding ways to eliminate my nasolabial folds and marionette lines. I really hate those lines and folds as they really make me appearing old and tired-looking.

Similarly to other wrinkle fillers, Double Strength Deep Wrinkle Filler is claimed to clinically diminish the look of lines and wrinkles instantly. It is also claimed to minimize the number of facial lines over time, in as little as four weeks.

Review – Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream (Vitamin A)

Have you heard of Tretinoin? Well Tretinoin, commonly known as Vitamin A, Retin A or Retinoids, is an potent antioxidant that is proven to help stimulate new collagen production, reduce pigmentation, remove fine lines and wrinkles.

I have bought this prescripted Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream more than a year ago at National Skin Centre. You probably will ask, why was I not using it till now? Well, Vitamin A and its derivatives is claimed to cause birth defects and I have to avoid it at all cost as I was trying for a baby during the last two years. After unsuccessful pregnancy till now, I decided to start using it.

Click here to learn more about Vitamin A.

My First Encounter With Tretinoin

In fact, many years back I have actually tested Tretinoin and it was of a different brand (can’t remember the brand). I first started Tretinoin with the lowest strength at 0.01%. I was recommended by the doctor to start with the lowest percentage to see if I can tolerate the product well before I can gradually increase the strength. As 0.01% is the mildest strength and it also means it has the lowest skin irritancy as compare to the higher strength, I didn’t get to see any result at all.

Therefore after using the lowest strength 0.01% for a few months, I decided to switch to a much higher strength at 0.025%, hoping to see a more obvious result. As there was no skin irritation occurred even after a few months usage, I took the courage to increase the strength further to 0.05%. Anyway, the highest strength available is 0.1%.

In fact, Tretinoin can be too irritating for many people and may not be suitable for all people. The most common irritations are skin dryness, redness and flaking.

My skin couldn’t take the higher strength at 0.05% and I encountered skin irritation. I have mild flaking all over the face, my skin was extremely dry, I felt tingling sensation after application and the corner of my lips bled. All-in-all, it was too drying for my skin! Hence, I stopped using it barely after two months.

Vitamin A & Hydroquinone

Lately, I have read a couple of beauty books by doctors and most of them (almost all) have highly recommended the readers to use Tretinoin (also known as Retin A or Vitamin A) to help stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity and fight wrinkles.

Experts have claimed that when Vitamin A mixes with Hydroquinone (a bleaching ingredient), both will enhance the removal of pigment or brown spots on the skin.

Dr Brooke Rutledge Seckel, M.D., author of Save Your Face, has claimed that “Combining Retinol 0.3% with Hydroquinone 4% is effective in resolving fine lines, pigment and improving skin texture.”

Paula Begoun, author of Don’t Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me, has also claimed that “When tretinoin is used in combination with hydroquinone, skin discolorations can show a far more noticeable and impressive improvement.”

Click here to read more about the great combination of Vitamin A and hydroquinone….

Giving Tretinoin A Second Chance!

After realizing the goodness of this combination, I decided to mix my current hydroquinone product Paula’s Choice Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion (with 2% hydroquinone and 7% AHA) with Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream to see if both are used together could treat the stubborn dark spots on my right cheek area.

In addition, as I was hoping to eliminate fine lines on my forehead and nasolabial folds, improve my skin elasticity and increase collagen production, I therefore decided to give prescription Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream a shot again.

Review on Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream

Hyperpigmentation has always been one of my major skin problems and I have been painstakingly finding ways to treat it. There is this fairly obvious melasma on the right cheek area that has been causing me a headache. I have been finding solutions to eliminate this melasma but to no avail. I have tried various lasers and treatments but they do not seem to help lighten the dark spots at all.

A week after using Paula’s Choice Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion (with 2% hydroquinone and 7% AHA) with Retacnyl Tretinoin 0.025% Cream, I was glad to notice superficial improvement on the melasma, the stubborn dark spots seem lighter. But the “happiness” didn’t last long anyway and after continuously using both products for a month, I was shocked to find the melasma (on the right cheek) has gotten even darker than before. There was redness on the areas applied too. I kept asking myself why??

Review – Japan SANA’s Natural Resource Range

A few months ago, I have received a full range of Japan SANA’s Natural Resource products and I was supposed to review them one month after usage. Yes I know it was way overdue. But due to other commitments lately, I have no choice but to defer this review. Excuses excuses excuses hee hee…………..

Thankfully, Carra from SANA has never chased me on this. Thanks Carra and Elfaine from TheSampleStore for their patience and understanding! :-)

Click here to read my earlier preview on SANA’s Natural Resource.

The range of SANA’s Natural Resource products that I have received and to review are :

  • Natural Resource Medicated Cleansing Oil
  • Natural Resource Medicated Foamed Wash
  • Natural Resource Medicated Skin Lotion (Toner)
  • Natural Resource Medicated Milk Lotion
  • Natural Resource Medicated Cream
  • Natural Resource Medicated Essence Lotion (Serum)
  • Natural Resource Medicated UV Milk SPF19 PA+++ (sunblock)
  • Natural Resource Liquid Foundation UV SPF22 PA+++
  • Natural Resource Loose Powder UV SPF19 PA+++
  • Natural Resource Medicated Compact Pressed Powder
  • Natural Resource Moist Skincare Powder 24h (night powder)

SANA’s Natural Resource Profile

SANA’s Natural Resource products, from Japan, contain natural ingredients such as balsam, wild rose, magwort, white birch, brown sugar and adlay extracts. They also contain refreshing fruits and fragrant flowers such as geranium, lavender, rosewood, bergamot (orange) and grapefuit. These natural aromas allows skin and mind to relax with the refreshing fragrance of herbal aroma and to heal tired spirit. Frankly, I was a little skeptical to review these products at first. Reason because it contains natural lavender ingredient which (I always have this perception) will cause skin irritation especially on sensitive skin like mine. But I brave myself to try out the products and to my surprise, most of the products do not cause any irritation except the Essence Lotion.

All SANA’s Natural Resource products are FREE of colorants, mineral oil, alcohol (except Skin Lotion AC), paraben, ultraviolet ray absorbent agent and artificial fragrances.

All SANA’s Natural Resource is suitable for sensitive skin except Lotion AC.

SANA’s Natural Resource Cleansing Oil

180ml / S$34.90

SANA’s Natural Resource Cleansing Oil is my favourite SANA Natural Resource product. I like the transparent lightweight, dilute and non-oily texture. It is less oilier than other cleansing oils I have tested before such as Shu Uemura and Fancl. I like the light lavender scent too.

Although SANA Cleansing Oil is very gentle but it effectively removes stubborn waterproof makeup pretty well. This oil-based makeup remover effortlessly remove all traces of makeup and it doesn’t make my skin feeling greasy/oily after use. It doesn’t make my skin feeling dry nor tight. And most importantly, it doesn’t cause any irritation on my sensitive skin. Great! It is definitely suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin too.

Will I buy it myself? Yes definitely!

SANA’s Natural Resource Foamed Wash

160ml / S$28.90

SANA’s Natural Resource Foamed Wash is my second step cleansing product. It helps to remove impurities, dead skin cells and residue on my skin. The lather is thick and supple. It feels gentle on my skin and it doesn’t cause any skin irritation. My skin feels clean and fresh after usage. Although my skin doesn’t feel tight which most cleansing foams do but SANA NR Foam Wash tends to leave a slight friction on my skin. I reckon it is due to the drying agent such as detergent in it.

Will I buy it myself? Maybe

SANA’s Natural Resource Skin Lotion M (Toner)

180ml / S$38.90

What I like about SANA’s Natural Resource Skin Lotion is that it provides the third step of cleansing : it further helps to remove the dirt and residue that the cleansing oil and foamed wash missed.

SANA’s Natural Resource Skin Lotion provides this lavender scent which is very refreshing. It is not sticky and it is quite watery. It doesn’t contain alcohol or fragrance which is good.

For night regimen, I will soak a cotton pad in SANA’s Natural Resource Skin lotion and rub my face with it. I will see makeup, residue, dirt and grime on the cotton pad. This mechanical rubbing with the toner-soaked cotton pad also helps to exfoliate the dead skin cells on the surface at the same time.

Will I buy it myself? Very likely!

Review – NEW Shiseido Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum

Reversing Skin Aging

Many of you have probably started to see their first sign of aging at as early as in their late 20s or early 30s. Common first signs of aging such as fine lines appearing on forehead and eye areas, skin dullness and loss of firmness.

And before you undergo frequent spa and non-invasive treatments, why not find out what are the 3 elements that are crucial to the aging process?

Well to achieve a youthful-looking skin, the 3 key elements that your skin needs are collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

What are Collagen, Elastin and Hyaluronic Acid?

Collagen, a protein, is a major component of the dermis. Collagen is produced by a special cell that gives your skin elasticity.

Think of elastin as acting like a rubber band that holds your skin on your face. When it is damaged or weakened, your face becomes lax or loose, develops wrinkles and sags.

Hyaluronic acid surrounds and supports the collagen and all of the cells of the dermis and epidermis. It helps maintain the moisture content of the dermis and the epidermis. It allows nutrients to reach the skin cells. It also holds water, moisturizes the skin, and helps keeps it soft and supple.

Experience timeless skin with NEW Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum at S$133

Inspired by the results of advanced cosmetic procedures, Shiseido is proud to present a revolutionary regenerating skincare – Super Corrective Serum.

Super Corrective Serum is the latest product from Shiseido and it will be first launched at Takashimaya counter on 5th October 2010.

This revolutionary skin regenerating serum uses a new bio-ingredient developed exclusively by Shiseido to strengthen skin’s ability to produce all three elements of youthful-looking skin - collagen, elastin & hyaluronic acid.

Shiseido’s exclusive new bio ingredient, Bio-Corrective Complex, (alike Growth Factor technology) boosts the production of fibroblast cells by 27% to restore the natural youth factors by creating these 3 vital elements that give skin its youthfulness.

What can Bio-Corrective Complex do for your skin?

The truth is as skin ages, it loses its ability to produce the same amounts of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid it produced when it was young. These 3 elements, which are key to beautiful youthful-looking skin, are created by fibroblasts in the skin. As fibroblasts weaken over time, their production diminishes.

This innovative breakthrough ingredient, consists of natural plant extracts such as yeast extracts and safflower extracts, reactivates aged fibroblasts and restores their ability to produce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

NEW Super Corrective Serum contains antioxidant natural ingredient such as rose apple extracts and exfoliation natural ingredients too.

My experience with Super Corrective Serum

I’m on my Day 6 with NEW Super Corrective Serum. At age 42 this year, I hope to see some results even though my skin is already in excellent condition to start with. But I do have problems with loss of firmness and skin dullness.

Review – Clinique Super Rescue Antioxidant Night Moisturizer

Moisturizer is one of the most basic and important daily skin care regimen for me. Although moisturizer does not eliminate wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentations or firm up skin but it does one wonderful thing - to seal the skin with all the nutrients that I have applied earlier.

It also has the important function of repairing the protective skin lipid barrier, so that the skin does not lose too much fluid and feel dry, irritated and show more lines.

The primary purpose of the moisturizer is to seal. It should feel good and make the skin feel soft and moisturized. This is actually the pampering phase of the skin care routine.

With rosacea, dry and sensitive skin, looking for a moisturizer can be a challenge for me. I will easily get flared up if the products I’ve used contain skin irritant ingredients. So after much searching, I finally found Clinique Super Rescue Antioxidant Night Moisturizer.
