I’m a strong believer in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), probably because I have grew up surrounded with these chinese medicine around me. My dad and uncles used to own traditional chinese medical halls. Even till now, I’m still occasionally taking chinese tonic herbs (which require me to brew it) to help improve my overall health.

Recently, I have received an invitation to try out a TCM anti-aging supplement, it is the Vita Green Lingzhi. I accepted the offer without much hesitation as I’m always very keen to learn more about the wonders of chinese herbs. However, I’m not keen on bird’s nest at all which I have only taken less than 10 times in my whole life.

Food For Beautiful Skin

To have a beautiful skin, it is essential to include in that basic three as many fruits and vegetables and healthy fatty acids as you can. In addition, you need an extra dose of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, collagen builders, and certain other nutrients to keep all of your cells healthy and your connective tissue – especially your skin – strong and well hydrated.

Let’s enjoy the fact that you can achieve a beautiful skin and fight the effects of aging through your diet.

Amino acids

The building blocks of all proteins in our tissues, including skin and hair.

Where you can find them — Lean meat, fish (especially mackerel), poultry, eggs, dairy products and beans.

Coenzyme Q10

It is extremely important because it gets into the cell membrane and protects it from free radicals damage. This antioxidant is essential for healthy skin and a healthy heart.

Where you can find it — Mackerel, salmon, sardines, beef, peanuts and spinach.

When taken internally, this mineral has been shown to be a significant factor in collagen formation.

Where you can find it — Organ meats, seafood, nuts, seeds, wheat bran cereals, whole grain products and cocoa products.

Omega-3 fatty acids

They are essentials for rebuilding cells as well as reproducing new ones. They also regulate a variety of our bodily functions, including our blood pressure, blood clot formation, and immune response.

Where you can find them — Fresh deepwater fish, including salmon, mackerel and sardines.

Green tea

It may help to prevent some cancers because of its high antioxidant content. Research has demonstrated that green tea extract not only can fight both environmental and metabolic free radicals but that it also repairs DNA. Damaged DNA promotes aging, reduces your defenses against free radicals, diminishes your cells’ regenerative ability, and can even result in skin cancer.

Where you can find it — In green tea leaves and tea bags.

A deficiency in iron can lead to anemia, which can cause unduly pale skin, weakness, headaches, reduced resistance to infection, decreased tolerance to cold, and poor circulation, which can rob your skin of the oxygen and nutrients it needs to look its best.

Where you can find it — Red meat, liver, kidney, egg yolk, fish, poultry, shellfish, nuts, wholegrains and dried fruits.

It is necessary for the release of cellular energy in all of our body’s soft tissues, it has a direct effect on the health of our skin. It also has been found to improve circulation, which also favorably impacts skin.

Where you can find it — Green leafy vegetables, unpolished grains, wheat bran, nuts, seeds, banana and avocado.

Vitamin A

It is believe vitamin A may prevent premature wrinkling and bumpy skin. Vitamin A deficiencies can result in rough, dry and scaly skin. Vitamin A supplements increase skin’s reflective abilities, thereby improving its own natural sun protection.

Where you can find it — Yellow, green and oranges vegetables and dark colored fruits, such as carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash, spinach, egg yolks, liver, fish oils and dairy products.

Vitamin B

It plays an important role in skin health. Deficiency syndromes include cracks in the lips, rough skin and skin pigmentation. It also helps to maintain skin softness and is widely used as a humectant or moisturizer for the skin.

Where you can find it — Brewer’s yeast, fortified cereals, wholegrains, dairy foods and lean meat.

Vitamin C

This powerful antioxidant protects you from free-radical damage that comes from sun exposure or any other source. Vitamin C is important for tissue growth and wound healing, as well as collagen formation. It also helps to prevent water loss and therefore maintains the skin’s barrier function.

What you can find it — Citrus fruits, such as grapefruits, lemons, oranges, mango, asparagus, avocado and broccoli.

Vitamin E

It is a superstar antioxidant and it is an important free radical scavenger that works to prevent damage to the cell membrane. It improves our circulation, and is a necessary component of tissue repair.

Where you can find it — Vegetable oils, wheat germ, nuts, seeds, poultry, fish and eggs.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is essential to blood clotting and the making of a protein in our blood that regulates calcium in our bloodstream. It also heals and prevents broken blood vessels.

Where you can find it — Spinach, broccoli, egg yolk, milk, beef liver and fish liver oil.

Drinking water keeps skin hydrated and glowing. It’s the number-one way to feel younger and healthier.

White tea

It is an effective weapon against free radical damage. It also found to protect the skin’s lipid content, both when applied topically and taken internally.

Where you can find it — White tea leaves and tea bags.

Zinc is a key nutrient in helping to maintain the health of our skin, hair and bones. It also helps to prevent damage to our skin’s collagen and elastin fibers.

What you can find it — Meat, shellfish, and poultry.

Boost Collagen & Elastin Production With Vitamin A & C

Collagen is the major skin protein, responsible for elasticity. The ultimate goal in skin care is to encourage the skin’s own collagen-producing machinery and stimulate collagen repair.

When our skin processes are functioning optimally, our capability to regenerate collagen and elastin keeps pace with their natural degeneration. As time goes by, we have less and less of an ability to maintain dynamic equilibrium, so these proteins begin to degenerate faster than our body can repair them.

Scientific research shows that at age thirty, collagen and elastin production starts to decline in quantity and quality. Modern science has discovered many revolutionary and non-invasive ways to jump-start the collagen-producing machinery to help keep your skin smooth and youthful looking and even reverse many of the signs of premature aging.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), so far, has proven to be one of the strongest catalysts of collagen growth especially when it’s applied topically. Using products that incorporate this nutrient, as well as eating foods that contain it, can significantly improve that quality and quantity of the collagen we produce, which will make skin firmer, more radiant, and healthier-looking today, and help keep it looking that way tomorrow. And although taking oral vitamin C is important and healthy, applying it topically is the most potent way to get its anti-aging benefit for your skin.

What you can find it Citrus fruits, such as grapefruits, lemons, oranges, mango, strawberries, raw peppers, asparagus, avocado and broccoli.

Vitamin A

Retinoids, derivatives of vitamin A, have also proven to be important parts of the anti aging arsenal. Studies have shown that they stimulate the production of new skin cells and inhibit the body’s natural enzymes that break down collagen. Younger skin, by using retinol, the non-prescription strength variety, should do the trick. Prescription-strength tretinoin, is indeed a more potent wrinkle fighter, but it can also be irritating and increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

Where you can find it Leafy vegetables, dark coloured fruits, carrots, fish liver oils, animal and fish livers.

Incorporating both vitamin C and retinol into a daily skin-care regimen will help to tackle erosion of both collagen and elastin safely and effectively. If you haven’t already started using the basic collagen-boosting, over the counter vitamin C- and retinol-based products, you skin would benefit greatly from trying them now. They not only will give you positive results today but will also prevent future damage. If you have been using basic collagen-building products and are happy with the results, keep up the good work.

Detox Your Body With Juices

Prevent Signs Of Aging With Antioxidants

Want to reverse the visible signs of aging? Try supplying your skin with antioxidant. Antioxidant can do wonderful job by standing guard and prepared to fight to keep your cells healthy, your skin gorgeous, and your body disease-free.

What is antioxidant?

Antioxidants can be vitamins, minerals, amino acids, hormones, and enzymes. These different antioxidants can disarm damaging free radicals to some modest degree and protect protein and DNA, our genetic message system. Since there’s no way to constantly monitor free radical activity, the only way to ensure that you have 24-hour protection is to control your dietary intake of antioxidants. The free radical scavengers require the presence of the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E (and many others) in proper amounts for this protective system to work. The smart way to do is to eat the freshest fruits and vegetables several times a day.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A and the derivatives of vitamin A are called the retinoids, which are an important ingredient in many skin medications. This fat-soluble vitamin truly works wonders for the skin. It regulate the growth of the epidermal cells, inhibit the formation of cancers, decrease inflammation and improve immune function in the skin. It’s so effective, in fact, that it is prescribed to heal severe acne and other skin problems. It also protects your hair and vision, along with your respiratory and digestive systems Vitamin A and its derivatives are powerful antioxidants, and studies have shown that this compound can decrease and reverse the signs of aging of the skin.

Recommendation for supplement : take only 2,500 IU of vitamin A daily, as overdose can become toxic and caused increased pressure on your brain. And most importantly, Vitamin A should not be taken by women who are pregnant and dosages higher than those recommended should be avoided.

Good food sources : animal and fish livers; fish liver oils; carrots; green and yellow vegetables.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, is important in preventing free-radical damage, and helps new collagen formation and wound healing. Vitamin C has also been shown to enhance the protection of your skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation from sunlight. It is nearly impossible to obtain all our vitamin C needs from dietary sources, so it is wise to supplement. Vitamin C is an essential cofactor in collagen production in the skin. That means if vitamin C is lacking, there is little collagen production in the skin. Topical application assures better vitamin C concentration on the skin. However, there has to be a certain blood level of vitamin C as well, to maintain good skin from the inside out.

Recommendation for supplement : take 1,000-2,000 mg of vitamin C daily, divide between lunch and dinner. You could also take vitamin C supplement called ascorbyl palmitate (vitamin C ester), which is fats soluble. A dose of about 500 mg a day is adequate.

Good food sources : fresh fruit – especially blackcurrants, rosehips, stawberries, citrus and topical fruits; raw peppers; green leafy vegetables; tomatoes and potatoes.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E, another potent antioxidant, is a fat-soluble vitamin, found in your cell membranes. It is an important free radical scavenger that works to prevent damage to the cell membrane, which is one of the vital structures to which free radicals produce their most damaging effects on your cells. Vitamin E helps your skin stay youthful by protecting against UV radiation. However, taking vitamin E does not excuse you from using daily sunscreen. Scientific evidence shows that vitamin E may be instrumental in helping you fight aging at a cellular level. Long before we see outward evidence of aging such as wrinkles, gray hair, etc., the damage begins at a cellular level.

Recommendation for supplement : for daily dosage, take 200 IU for younger patients and 400 IU for patients in their forties and fifties. As vitamin E can interfere with the ability of your blood to clot, so do not take this vitamin if you are on blood thinners or proceeding an operation soon.

Good food sources : wholegrains; egg yolks; green vegetables; seed oils and vegetable oils.

CoQ10 is necessary for the production of enzyme Q10 in the mitochondria in your cells. It also acts as an antioxidant, protecting the cell membrance and is essential for healthy skin. CoQ10 deactivates some of the free radicals that are released during the energy-generating process. At the same time, it takes part in the energy-gaining process. We do produce CoQ10 for ourselves; however, the problem is that the production of CoQ10 declines by about 50 percent by middle age, so does our energy level.

Recommendation for supplement : take 100 mg per day with meals. However, this drug can interact with many other drugs, so you should consult your doctor before taking this CoQ10.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha lipoic acid, a nature powerful antioxidant, increases the positive effects of other antioxidants such as vitamin A and E, protects these vitamins in the body and helps them to do a better job of squashing free radicals. It also helps protect DNA from metals that can generate free radicals. Alpha lipoic acid can actually increase a cell’s metabolism, meaning the cell increases its energy production and capacity to heal. It can also prevent glycation, the harmful effect of sugar in the blood, which helps to prevent premature aging and skin damage. It can also work wonders on aging skin and has shown to treat lines, wrinkles, dull skin, under-eye bags and puffiness when using topically.

Recommendation for supplement : take 100 mg daily. Make sure to take it with a significant amount of food because it is both fat and water soluble and because it can be very irritating on an empty stomach.
