It’s nearly impossible to divorce irritation from efficacy. Products that generate the best results often come with some minor irritation, especially at the start of using them. Most people, however, get over the initial irritation and enjoy the benefits that accompany the outcome.

Fallacy : The major and expensive skin-care brands are using the latest scientific ingredients.

Truth : Shockingly, most expensive major cosmetics brands are not at the forefront of skin science. They are a few years behind. First they watch the little guys like myself or other doctors’ brands introduce new ingredients, and then, once the dust settles, jump in themselves.

They are, after all, large, conservative corporations that move slowly and cautiously. Few of the major companies have medical doctors on staff. It often takes major cosmetics companies years to include a new, effective ingredient – and then they only venture in by using minuscule amounts that may offer minimal benefits. This practice is good for marketing but bad for achieving results.

The Right Order For Your Basics

One of the keys to maximizing the benefits of any product in your daily skin-care regimen is to apply products with a thinner consistency before the thicker more creamy ones, no matter what their active ingredients are. Products with heavy consistencies can block lighter-weight ones from penetrating the skin and doing their job.

Here is a sample application order :

1. Liquids, such as anti acne or light peel pads for exfoliating and collagen building, or any kind of toner.

2. Serums or gels, which are more viscous than a liquid but less so than a lotion and can do everything from moisturize to deliver vitamin C or offer sun protection.

3. Lotions, which are milky, slightly thicker liquids, and can include moisturizers, moisturizers with sunscreens, and moisturizers with antioxidants or exfoliating acids.

4. Creams, which can do all of the above but are thicker, richer substances that won’t spill out of a jar if it’s turned over.

5. Ointments, generally petrolatum-based solids that come in a tube and squeeze out very slowly, such as Vaseline.

The exception to this rule of thumb is that any form of sun protection, be it in a moisturizer or not, must be applied before any other product (except a liquid). Its defensive ingredients need to cling directly to skin in order to be most effective.

DMAE can quickly and dramatically improve the appearance of sagging skin. As an added bonus, DMAE boosts the effects of other antioxidants, resulting in increased smoothness, brightness and line reduction.

What Causes Aging?

Gravity is certainly a factor. The gravity of the earth constantly pulls on our bodies, including the facial skin. This gravity is one factor that causes skin and muscle to sag. Even an individual who takes immaculate care of both skin and body will have some sagging of the face over a period of years. Even persons who have never exposed their faces to the sun will have some sagging.

I encourage people to make the most of their palms and fingers. Warming a skincare product in your hands will help it to better penetrate the skin and double or even triple its effectiveness.

By wrapping your hands around your face, the cosmetic and your own heat will act together like a steam iron, making your skin remarkably smooth. You can use your fingers to apply pressure, to push particles through pores to deliver them deep into your skin and improve circulation, or to massage your face and smooth out creases.

The sauna is an excellent way to deep-cleanse the skin. The steam gently dilates the pores and lifts out toxins, leaving your skin polished.

All the high-tech ingredients and treatments in the world will never be able to achieve their full benefits if your skin isn’t in the best condition it can possibly be.

I want to caution you, though, that shopping by ingredients alone is tricky. The same ingredient in one formulation may be irritating or drying but cause no problems in a different formulation. The formulations of high-quality products are painstakingly developed so that the other ingredients counter the side effects of one ingredient. Sometimes, too, one ingredient boosts the effectiveness of another. The mix and amounts of ingredients is the formulation, and it can vary enormously from one product to another.

The greatest fallacy promoted by conventional skin-care companies is that if a product doesn’t work, it’s your fault.
