Review – FANCL Facial Washing Powder

Fancl Facial Washing Powder, is considered one of the most well-known facial foaming wash in the skincare industry. Completely preservative-free, it does not contain any sodium lauryl sulphate or sodium lauryl ether sulphate foaming agent.

FANCL believes that when preservatives in skincare accumulate on skin, it may cause stress to the skin and may bring about harmful effects such as :

  • Reducing the effectiveness of beauty ingredients
  • Accelerating skin aging
  • Damaging skin cell DNA
  • Promoting the production of immature skin cells, lowering the skin’s natural protection

Product claims

Experience its silky softness as you smooth it on. Feel the bouncy cushioning layer between your face and fingers as the foam works to cleanse away all that dirt and grime, leaving your face feeling smooth and moist all the time.

Ingredient claims

New Fancl facial washing powder now harnesses the power of 3 types of amino acid in its special Amino Hybrid Technology formulation – a Moisture Retaining Amino Acid Cleansing Agent which rids skin of dirt and grime without stripping away its natural moisture; Polyamino Acid which helps to create a creamier, denser foam and Amino Acid (Serine) which makes skin feel wonderfully soft after facial wash.

Foam is commonly perceived as harmful to skin as it is known for robbing moisture from skin, leaving it dry. This is not the case with Amino Acid based facial cleansers.

Harmful Ingredient

Fancl Facial Washing Powder contains potassium myristate, a detergent cleansing agent that is a constituent of soap; it can be drying and sensitizing for some skin types.

As Fancl Facial Washing Powder consists free of preservatives, it is therefore only available in smaller packaging of 25g and 50g. Freshness period : 60 days once opened and 1 year from manufacturing date if unopened.

  • S$15.00 25g x 1 bottle
  • S$26.00 50g x 1 bottle
  • S$48.50 50g x 2 bottles

I double my cleansing effectiveness with the help of Fancl Facial Washing Puff. It helps to create more creamy dense foam which is smooth over my face. Although it removes dirt effectively, my skin feels dry and slightly tight after use.

Will I buy it again? …… I doubt so!

Review – Sisley Hydra-Global Intense Anti-Aging Hydration

Sisley Hydra-Global Intense Anti-Aging Hydration, is after all a basic moisturizer with no anti-aging benefits as it claimed to be.

I have tried and tested this product out of curiosity which claims to provide great hydrating benefits.

The ‘interesting‘ part about this product is that it is NOT a serum neither is a skin-stimulator or antioxidant but yet it is said can be used either before your favourite moisturizer or use it alone as a moisturizer. After using numerous Sisley skin-care products, I realized even their beauty counter advisors are not able to categorize certain products at times and this Hydra-Global is one of them. Come on, make up your mind!

Product claims

Hydra-Global is the solution to the problem of dehydration which can be caused by age, the sun and other environmental aggressions eg: wind and air-conditioning.

Ingredient claims (over-inflated?)

  • Extract of padina pavonica – increase the skin’s capacity to preserve water.
  • Extract of wild pansy – circulation of water within the skin will be re-activated and increased.
  • Malachite extract (with the combination of plant actives) – which has an excellent anti-oxidant result, your skin will appear ‘plumped up’ and regain youthful suppleness and luminosity.
  • Extract of stevia leaf – a powerful ‘humectant’ will increase the skin’s function to retain water.
  • Extract of chestnut – acting as a natural exfoliant will optimize the skin’s surface condition.

Sisley Hydra-Global Intense Anti-Aging Hydration contains some antioxidant ingredients which are tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E) and yeast extract. Other beneficial ingredients are panthenol, alcohol form of vitamin B, can be effective for hydration and argireline which claims to have a muscle-relaxing effect similar to Botox injections.

But it also contains lavandula angustifolia (lavendar) oil and linalool, which can cause irritation to skin.

Personal point of views

Although this product is claimed to have hydrating abilities, it doesn’t actually provide much hydrating benefits and is essentially what any moisturizer can do.

Lightweight and non-oily. Easily absorbed into the skin.

Skin is slightly moisturized and tone.

Will I buy it again? …… I don’t think so!

Review – Clinique Clarifying Moisture Lotion 2

Clinique Clarifying Moisture Lotion 2 for dry combination skin, is claimed as clinically formulated, allergy tested and 100% fragrance free. It is an alcohol-based toner that also contains witch hazel and peppermint.

Product claims

This softening water lotion was developed by Clinique’s dermatologists to rehydrate and renew dry to combination skins. Gently releases the hold of dulling surface flakes to smooth skin’s texture, optimize cell turnover. Creates an ideal state for moisturization. Quickly absorbed. Apply to cleansed skin with saturated cotton, avoiding eye area.

What contradict on this product is that, it is claimed to have allergy tested but it contains ingredients which are skin irritants.

Hamamelis virginiana, also known as witch hazel, can have potent antioxidant properties and can be an irritant. Mentha piperita (peppermint) leaf water, a counter-irritant, is used to induce local inflammation for the purpose of relieving inflammation in deeper or adjacent tissues. It works by substituting one kind of inflammation for another, which is never good for skin.

And although your skin may not show the signs of inflammation or doesn’t react in an irritated fashion, if you apply irritants to your skin the damage is still taking place and is ongoing, so it adds up over time. Chlorphenesin – alcohol used as a preservative in cosmetics, can be drying and irritating to skin. These ingredients have an irritating and sensitizing effects on skin.

As this toner contains skin-irritant ingredients like alcohol, witch hazel and peppermint, I have experienced minor irritation on my skin occasionally. I like this toner as it is 100% fragrance free. But I have noticed it does dry up my skin after long use. It doesn’t really help to wipe off the dirt, residue completely.

Will I buy it again? …… I doubt so!

Review – NIKS Intensive Firming Eye Cream

This brand, named NIKS, reverse spell out as ‘SKINS’, is introduced by my elder brother and is well known for its acne treatments.

Marketing claims

NIKS Intensive Firming Eye Cream, one of the NIKS product I have tested, is marketed as a smooth and gentle cream designed for intensive wrinkle relief and use on sensitive eye area. This advanced eye cream helps smooth wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes to provide a healthy and youthful appearance.

Product claims

To help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on sensitive eye area.

NIKS Intensive Firming Eye Cream contains some potent antioxidant ingredients like tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, a stable-form vitamin C, that moisturizes and stimulates the production of collagen. Red wine and white tea extracts possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that helps to fight free radicals. Rosa centifolia, also known as rose hip oil, is a good emollient oil that has antioxidant properties.

One of the key ingredient, acetyl hexapeptide, as known as argireline, is claimed to inhibit lines caused by muscle movement, tackles dynamic wrinkles and lines.

It also contains some skin-irritant ingredients like zinc PCA, sandalwood extract and phenoxyethanol.

My personal point of view

Though this product contains a handful of active ingredients, its effectiveness will very much depend on the ingredient percentage and the packaging. If the correct ingredient is used but the quantity is inadequate in the product, you won’t be seeing much improvement when using it. As this product is packaged in a jar, the active ingredients will be ineffective within a short period of time after the container is opened.

Creamy and is not easily penetrate to the skin.

Very little visible improvement on fine lines and wrinkles around the eye area.

Will I buy it again? …… Unlikely!

Review – Sisley All Day All Year

Sisley All Day All Year, Essential Day Care, is one product I have trusted and regretted so much on using it. Before I start trashing out all the untruth and damage it has caused, let me provide you the product profile on this ‘unique’ day cream.

Product claim

Sisley All Day All Year, the only product available using a patented method of encapsulating UVA &UVB suncare. Unlike other sunscreens, irrespective of the SPF factor, are only effective for 2 hours before they need to be reapplied, All Day All Year, as claimed, is capable of blocking 90% of UVA and UVB rays for 8 continuous hours.

Skin will therefore be protected from environment aggressors, stress, harmful UVA and UVB rays which are the number one cause for aging. Skin will be hydrated, soft and velvety. Skin will regain a smooth and supple appearance and your complexion is more radiant.

I was in great shock when I realized there is hardly any UV protection and is not recommended for use even one day out of the year. Without sunscreen, this emollient moisturizer for dry skin is a poor choice for daytime, the cost is outrageous, and it contains irritating oils of juniper, sage, and thyme. <Sources : Paula Begoun – Don’t go to the cosmetics counter without me>

Lightweight and non-oily, is suitable for all skin types.

Due to inadequate sun protection, new dark spots have appeared and old spots has becoming more visible.

Will I buy it again? …… Not again!

Review – SK-II Whitening Source Derm Definition

SK-II Whitening Source Derm Definition, one of the best seller on SK-II line is said to help even out your skin tone to promote a clear, translucent glow and also make you fairer.

This intensive gel-based whitening treatment, inspired by laser technology, that helps disperse existing dark spots and fleckles while controlling the formation of new ones.

Pitera, a key ingredient, is a form of yeast claim to be unique because of the fermenting and filtering process it goes through before it being added to the products. Pitera, an essential ingredient only for SKII line and is found in every SK-II product.

Niacinamide, another active ingredient, also known as vitamin B3, is said to increase ceramide and free fatty acid levels in skin, prevent skin from losing water content. It also acts as a skin-lightening agent that treats skin discolorations.

It also contains ascorbyl glucoside, a form of vitamin C that combined with glucose, that acts as an antioxidant and may lighten the skin tone.

After completion on one bottle : dark spots are still fairly visible though no new formation appears. Skin is more hydrated.

Will I buy it again? …… I don’t think so!

Review – Vichy Laboratoires Capital Soleil SPF 50+ Face Cream

When buying a sunscreen product, most people usually do not bother on checking what’re the ingredients in the product, but more concerned on the texture, smell and SPF. In fact, it is far more important to know what’s the beneficial ingredients that can help on protecting our skin from the harmful UV rays

Vichy Laboratoires Capital Soleil SPF 50+ Face Cream for reactive skin is one product I have discovered recently to have many useful ingredients. It contains Mexoryl® XL, Octocrylene, Titanium Dioxide and Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane.

Mexoryl® XL – is an active ingredient which said to give a broad-spectrum sunscreen protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

Octocrylene – protects skin from the UVB range of sunlight.

Titanium Dioxide – offers protection across a greater range of wavelengths with no risk of irritation and protects across the entire UVA & UVB spectrum.

Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane – it is a synthetic sunscreen ingredient (also known as Parsol 1789 and avobenzone) that can protect against the entire range of the sun’s UVA rays.

It also contains Eperuline which helps to lower the sensitivity level of the skin, which is extremely suitable for sensitive skin like me. After application, my skin tends to feel a bit whitish and slight oily.

Will I buy it again? …… I doubt so!
