Review – Sunplay SPF 130 PA+++ Super Block Clear Finish & SPF 80 PA++ UV Body Mist Sunblock

By now, I believe you should be aware that sun is the #1 cause of premature aging. And in fact, the earlier that exposure begins, the longer it goes on, the worse the damage is.

Protecting yourself from ultraviolet radiation is the most important task you should do to revere or prevent sun damage. Applying sunscreen daily is definitely one of the best sun protection you can do to your skin.

I have recently received a complimentary Sunplay SPF 130 PA+++ Super Block Clear Finish and a Sunplay SPF 80 PA++ UV Body Mist Sunblock. Many thanks to TheSampleStore for sponsoring these products to me.

Sunplay SPF 80 PA++ UV Body Mist Sunblock

S$17.90 / Net wt. 150ml

Sunplay SPF 80 PA++ UV Body Mist Sunblock, the newest sunblock from Sunplay, is the #1 sunscreen in Japan. It will be officially launched islandwide on 18 April 2011.

This easy-to-use spray-on sunscreen with high SPF 80 protection, protect skin from harmful UVB rays that cause sun burnt and PA++ protection from harmful UVA rays that cause wrinkles and skin-aging. It has became the best seller sunscreen upon its launch in Hong Kong last year.

The benefits of UV Body Mist Sunblock

  • SPF 80 PA++ – high UVA and UVB protection
  • Water resistant, long lasting for all kinds of outdoor activities
  • Easy-to-apply one touch aerosol spray, applies evenly to whole body
  • Refreshing citrus scent, with cooling sensation to soothe sunburned skin
  • Non-greasy and light

I have noticed that alcohol is the first ingredient on the ingredient list which usually means it has high concentration in it. Although I refrain from using any product that contains alcohol as it will tend to dry up the skin but I will still continue using it as I find it easy to use and convenient. Due to the alcohol content, this sunscreen is only suitable for the body and therefore NOT advisable to use it on your face especially.

UV Body Mist Sunblock also contains minuscule amount of vitamin C and E to help fight free radicals and increase sun protection from UV rays.

Treatment Review – Dermal Fillers For Nasiolabial Folds & Marionette Lines, And Botox For Face Slimming & Forehead

Three months ago, I have written an article on Facial Remodeling Workshop conducted by Dr Z and I’m glad I have been chosen as the winner blogger to win a FREE one-vial Juvederm (hyaluronic acid) filler facial contouring treatment.

During the earlier workshop, Dr Z performed on two patients to demonstrate the faster and convenient way to achieve a sharper nose, higher cheekbones and slim down the face using fillers and botox without going under the knife.

I’m always troubled with my nasiolabial folds and marionette lines, these aging signs have made me look 5 years older than I should. So after seeing the result of the two patients, I was somewhat convinced that he (Dr Z) can probably help to treat my aging problems and hence I decided to make a visit to his clinic two weeks ago.

After analysing my problems, Dr Z suggested I require 2 vials of fillers for my nasiolabial folds and marionette lines, and botox for my flabby jawline and forehead fine lines.

Treatment Review – Having Pixel Laser & Titan FaceLift At The Same Time

I’m always troubled with nasalabial fold (lines that run from corner of nostril to corner of mouth) and marionette lines (lines below corner of the mouth). I have tried numerous non-invasive treatments to treat these aging lines but to no avail. I’m also troubled with age spots, fine lines on forehead and below eye areas.

Therefore one and a half month ago, being a natural born vainpot, I decided to brave myself to do both Pixel Laser and Titan Facelift at the same time, hoping to boost better results. I’m not afraid of pain and both procedures treated by Dr Chee from Wen & Weng Medical Group, took me almost a hour. Nasalabial fold and marionette lines are treated with Titan Facelift while age spots and fine lines are mainly treated with Pixel Laser. Both treatments also help to boost collagen production – my all-time favourite skin benefit. *GRINS*

Review – Simple Soothing Facial Toner

SIMPLE is an inexpensive, ordinary no-frill UK based skincare brand. For the past 10 years, it has gained my trust all thanks to one of their popular product ‘Simple Refreshing Facial Wash Gel’. Till now, it is still one of my ‘must-have’ essential daily skincare product. Well, that is why I didn’t have much consideration when I first purchased Simple Soothing Facial Toner.

This toner is relatively cheap @S$7.50, considering it as an United Kingdom-based skincare line. It is such a huge different in price if you compare it with the big brands at departmental stores.

Simple Soothing Facial Toner is claimed to contain NO PERFUME, NO COLOUR and NO ALCOHOL. And it is also claimed suitable for people with sensitive skin like me.

Review – Can SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque Quench My Thirsty Skin?

Keeping my skin well hydrated and lubricated is an essential regimen that I will never miss. To me, skin hydrating is important as it will help to replenish the natural moisture factors in the upper layers of my skin.

SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque is yet another extremely ordinary and boring mask that I have tested. Nothing special about this mask other than the claims it have made.

Product profile

SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque, inspired by the award-winning Hydrating B5 Gel, this highly concentrated masque infuses dehydrated and stressed skin with optimal amounts of hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 to replenish depleted moisture levels. Enhanced with a unique complex containing constituents of the skin’s natural moisturizing factor (NMF), this weekly hydration treatment re-establishes the water balance critical for maintaining skin metabolic functions at optimal levels. Hydrating B5 Masque plumps moisture-deprived skin to restore a healthy, youthful appearance.

Overall SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque basically contains mainly water, glycerin and pH-adjusting agents. Pretty simple and uninteresting ingredients.

A quick look…. Sodium Hyaluronate and Sodium PCA are considered good water-binding agents that are often used in skin-care products. Calcium Pantothenate, also known as vitamin B5, is effective for hydration and wound healing.

Although SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque, for all skin types, is said to contain double the concentration of Sodium Hyaluronate available in SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel but there is no scientific prove that it will provide greater hydration than the latter.

After leaving the mask for about 15 minutes, this highly concentrated formula not a bit replenishes moisture to my dehydrated and stressed skin. It faintly allows the complexion to regain a radiant tone and smooth, supple texture. It barely helps to plump and illuminate the complexion, insignificantly resulting in a more youthful appearance.

Although this weekly hydration treatment is said to re-establish the water balance critical for maintaining healthy skin metabolic function but I probably will not bother to invest my time and money on this product.

Will I buy this product? Very unlikely

Review – Darphin Mild Aroma Peeling – Can This Botanical Product Remove Dead Skin Cells

I know many of you adore natural ingredients and botanical extracts, then you may want to consider Darphin Paris which is now available at VivoCity Tangs. Darphin’s belief is that beauty comes from inner balance and harmony of the body, mind and soul. Although it sounds great as an image-enhancing philosophy, but it doesn’t make a significant difference in the appearance of your skin.

I’m not a fan on skin care products using natural ingredients and botanical extracts. In my opinion, I’m a bit skeptical on their limitation and ability to actually help tackle skin issues or skin rejuvenation. In fact, research has shown that there are some common botanical ingredients are said to create serious skin inflammation and thereby accelerate skin aging.

Recently, when I managed to obtain a free 3.5ml sample on this Darphin Mild Aroma Peeling, I was actually quite excited and curious to test the product and to see if this botanical product is able exfoliate my dead skin cells.

Product claims

Gently removes impurities and clears away dead cells to reveal fresher, glowing skin that’s perfectly prepared and receptive to the benefits of additional treatments.

Although Darphin Mild Aroma Peeling is considered a botanical skin care product, but the ingredients found in the product are not 100% natural.

Darphin Mild Aroma Peeling still contains many synthetic ingredients and parabens as preservatives.

Let see what are some of the natural ingredients found in the product can do to your skin. Citrus medica limonum (lemon) peel extract – potent skin sensitizer and irritant. Ananas sativus (pineapple) fruit extract – has irritating properties that can break down the connecting layers between skin cells to exfoliate skin. Saponaria officinalis extract – plant extract with detergent cleansing properties. Santalum album (sandalwood) oil – is a skin-irritant that is usually used as a fragrance. Linalool – a potent skin irritant.

The texture for this Darphin Mild Aroma Peeling is in fact quite similar to Hazeline Snow White Cream. Creamy, fine-grained and slightly silky in texture.

As per instruction, I apply a thin layer of Darphin Mild Aroma Peeling over my face and neck avoiding the eye contour area. After leaving it on for a few minutes, I hold my skin between two fingers and gently rub off with circular motions. I realize it is in fact a difficult task to rub off the dried-up mask, the mask seems to absorb onto the skin and not much residue could come off. And after rinsing off with lukewarm water, my skin feels dehydrated and no ‘friction’ at all. I wonder if is the lemon or pineapple ingredient doing the trick. A bad bad feeling!

Sad to say, Darphin Mild Aroma Peeling doesn’t remove the impurities and clears away dead cells as promised. My skin neither feels fresh nor glowing.

Anyway with this poor formulation, I’m not surprise with the result.

Although, it contains numerous natural ingredients which are potent skin-irritants, so far I never encounter any reaction from it.

Will I buy it? I doubt so

Review – Chanel Restructuring Anti-Wrinkle Firming Night Cream

Personally, when it comes to shopping for cosmetics, Chanel naturally becomes one of the brands to consider on my shopping list. But when it comes to Chanel’s skin care products, I just find it hard to relate or entrust them to take good care of my skin. Somehow the skin care counterpart never really capture my attention or cross my mind of their existence.

Chanel Restructuring Anti-Wrinkle Firming Night Cream so far is the first Chanel skin care product I have tested. I have obtained the sample from a cosmetic purchase lately.

Product claims

Adhesioderm firms and resculpts; it’s as if surface skin is ‘bonded to its support system. Exclusive Life Cycle Regenerator dramatically reduces the appearance of wrinkles. The look of youth is restored.

Chanel Restructuring Anti-Wrinkle Firming Night Cream basically contains humectant, emollient and thickening agent. It contains tiny amount of vitamin E, which is close to nothing.

Phenoxyethanol and fragrance are skin irritant ingredients that are found in the product.

I like the ‘strawberry’ scent very much. Non-heavy texture is a plus point. As it is called ‘anti-wrinkle’, don’t expect to see miracle from this cream. It’s probably just a preventive cream rather than a treatment cream. Although there is no visible result so far but it does help my skin feels smooth and hydrate.

The conclusion : Sad to say, there’s nothing special about this product, in terms of ingredients and long-term benefits. The ‘Exclusive Life Cycle Regenerator’ is basically just another marketing fictitious claim, as there is no ingredient to support it at all.

But if you adore ‘feel good’ product, you may want to give this product a try. For me, I will give it a miss!

Will I buy this product? No way

Treatment Review – My Painful Experience With 1st Generation Thermage

I have always troubled with my nasolabial folds and marionette lines for many years. These signs of aging are due to insufficient protection against the sun in my 20s, extreme stress and severe insomnia which I’ve suffered for a year.

These facial aging, nasolabial folds (the fold of skin hanging down around the mouth) and marionette lines (the skin that fall down over the corner of the mouth and chin), make me look much older than I should. So early last year, I began to do some research on the best remedy through internet, press and feedback from my dermatologist.

At first I couldn’t decide between Titan and Thermage for skin tightening. I have in fact tried Titan treatment once many years ago when it was considered a fairly new machine at that time but no tightening result was shown.

So after analyzing the pros and cons on both treatments, I finally decided on Thermage as the most ideal choice to treat my problems.

Why I choose Thermage from Titan

Based on the research : Only 1 treatment is required for Thermage, whilst Titan requires at least 3 treatments in order to see results.

Thermage is able to burn fats, therefore able to contour my chubby face and reduce the double chin.

The cost factor : As most doctors are charging Thermage @$5k to $6k, and Titan @$1.5k to $2.5k. So after calculation, if 3 treatments are required for Titan, in total I will have to spend more on Titan to see result.

Dr Valentin Low Aesthetic and Laser Clinic

I’ve gotten to know Dr Valentin Low Aesthetic and Laser Clinic at Paragon through Beauty Shines Through – a website created by Allergan, where you can find a list of well-known doctors in Singapore.

My first encounter

What I remembered most on my first consultation session with Dr Valentin Low is that he gave me a feeling of confidence and assurance. His consultation was pretty convincing I must say. He painted a beautiful picture and told me not to worry too much and leave everything to him as he can achieve miracle for me. And he was very confident that these lines will be disappeared effortlessly.

My bad experience

It was a painful experience for me, in term of monetary and physically.

In fact, the first generation Thermage is considered the most painful non-invasive treatment I have tried so far. It was unbearable! It was so painful, I almost surrendered half way through the treatment. I couldn’t see any results unfortunately! Those who have tried the first generation Thermage will agree that it is really painful.

A month later….

I went back to the clinic for a review appointment a month after the treatment. Skin is overall firmer; eyelids are tightened, less puffy and sagging. But the major disappointments are the nasolabial folds and marionette lines, no visible improvement on these worried lines at all. He assured me that I will be able to see better results in the next couple of months time. In order to cheer me up further, he offered to give me ‘little’ complimentary treatments to tighten up my skin – ‘his trademark’ Gold-Threading (only on my cheek area) plus fillers injections (on my cheek bones), all FOC.

Immediately, I was able to see some superficial improvement with the Gold-Threading treatment. But sad to say, this ‘happiness’ was short-lived, the result barely lasted even 3 months.

3 to 6 months down the road….

Subsequently, I’ve visited him twice again, once on 3rd month and 6th month after the first treatment. Still no improvement at all. As expected, he convinced me that he can see the differences between before and after. He turned down my request when I asked for a ‘touch-up’ thermage session again. He advised it is risky for repeated thermage treatment within a year.

Research has shown that the result for first generation thermage treatment could only last for a year.

So for me, as expected, I still see no result after a year. I really felt so painful to spend my $6k hard-earned savings in this way. :-(

Will I try again? Probably for eyelid rejuvenation only

[Update @ 14 Dec 2014] Fortunately, Thermage has gone through a few generations and the latest Thermage is Total Tip. In fact, I’ve tested all the generations including the newest Total Tip. It’s definitely less painful and I could see the results instantly. Just a few weeks ago, I’ve my second Total Tip treatment at another clinic! :D Can’t wait to review it soon! By the way, Dr Valentin Low’s clinic also provides the latest Thermage Total Tip. The first generation Thermage is long gone!

Review – Sisleya Daily Line Reducer

Sisleya Daily Line Reducer, serum for all skin types, is claimed to provide an immediate sensation of comfort and freshness with both a smoothing and hydrating effect. Surface lines and wrinkles are plumped out and dehydration lines are softened. This skin is firmer, visibly smoother and glowing.

Product claims

With passing time, the fibroblast cells located at the base of deep wrinkles produce up to 3 times less collagen than the other fibroblasts. Thanks to an exclusive combination of 3 cutting edge active ingredients (extracts of Alkekengi’s Calyx, Soya and Padina Pavonica) Siselya Daily Line Reducer helps reconstruct the skin’s framework spectacularly.

My opinion

Well, Sisley has been successfully making the consumers believe that Sisleya Daily Line Reducer is ‘ONE’ cream that will able to help you look much much younger and that it is all you need to eliminate wrinkles and lines. And I believe many women have already fell into the trap.

There is no quick or immediate solution to eliminating lines and wrinkles. It doesn’t happen overnight. One cream itself will not able to do wonders. It will need correct treatments, skin care products with potent ingredients and proper daily regimen to help reduce them.

Hydrolyzed soy protein, its highly-acclaimed ingredient, is a antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent for skin. Although some studies have shown that it has a collagen-stimulating effect and that various compounds in soy influence skin thickness and elasticity but the research was carried out under carefully controlled conditions not related to the way soy protein is used in a cosmetic product.

Sisleya Daily Line Reducer contains tocopheryl acetate, vitis vinifera (grape) leaf extract and arginine which are potent antioxidants.

But is also contains some plant extract ingredients like potentilla errecta and lavender oil which are harmful to the skin.

Although skin is more supple, but there is no visible improvement on expression lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet. There is only a minimal improvement on skin hydration.

Conclusion : The result doesn’t substantiate its over-inflated claims. Sisleya Daily Line Reducer is definitely not the ‘miracle’ cream which you think can erase all those aging lines and wrinkles. Save the money, it is not worth it.

  The price is ridiculously expensive.

Will I buy it again? …… Unlikely!

Review – Rosken Firming & Nourishing Cream

Out of curiosity, I bought this Rosken Firming & Nourishing Cream, a body cream, which I found at one of the neighbourhood drugstore, to see how believing is the claim which said “to firm the skin by up to 60% in 28 days”. WOW!!?

Product claims

With unique BiOpti-Firm+ Plus CoQ10, Collagen and Elastin, firm the skin by up to 60% in 28 days. Firms, tones and nourishes skin for 24 hour protection. Rosken Firming & Nourishing Cream includes the latest in cosmeceutical skin firming technology to create a highly specialised moisturizing body lotion that visibly improves skin firmness, tone and elasticity. A special blend of luxurious emollients leaves skin perfectly moisturized and silky smooth.

Rosken Firming & Nourishing Cream contains some natural emollient ingredients like almond oil, caprylic/capric triglyceride and cetyl alcohol. It also contains lactic acid, a alpha hydroxy acid extracted from milk, which helps to exfoliates cells on the surface of skin by breaking down the material that holds skin cells together.

Other good water-binding ingredients like serine, elastin and urea; antioxidant ingredients like tocopheryl acetate, BHT and yeast extract can be found in the product. It does not contains paraben.

Light, non-oily and easily absorbed onto the skin

After 28 days, there is not visible improvement on firming, toning or giving the skin more elasticity as it claimed. But it does moisturize my skin pretty well. No improvement on the cellulite reduction too.

Will I buy it again? …… Maybe!
