Prevent Signs Of Aging With Antioxidants

What is antioxidant?

Antioxidants can be vitamins, minerals, amino acids, hormones, and enzymes. Recommendation for supplement : take only 2,500 IU of vitamin A daily, as overdose can become toxic and caused increased pressure on your brain. And most importantly, Vitamin A should not be taken by women who are pregnant and dosages higher than those recommended should be avoided.

Good food sources : animal and fish livers; fish liver oils; carrots; green and yellow vegetables.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, is important in preventing free-radical damage, and helps new collagen formation and wound healing. Vitamin C has also been shown to enhance the protection of your skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation from sunlight. It is nearly impossible to obtain all our vitamin C needs from dietary sources, so it is wise to supplement. Vitamin C is an essential cofactor in collagen production in the skin. That means if vitamin C is lacking, there is little collagen production in the skin. Topical application assures better vitamin C concentration on the skin. However, there has to be a certain blood level of vitamin C as well, to maintain good skin from the inside out.

Recommendation for supplement : take 1,000-2,000 mg of vitamin C daily, divide between lunch and dinner. You could also take vitamin C supplement called ascorbyl palmitate (vitamin C ester), which is fats soluble. A dose of about 500 mg a day is adequate.

Good food sources : fresh fruit – especially blackcurrants, rosehips, stawberries, citrus and topical fruits; raw peppers; green leafy vegetables; tomatoes and potatoes.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E, another potent antioxidant, is a fat-soluble vitamin, found in your cell membranes. It is an important free radical scavenger that works to prevent damage to the cell membrane, which is one of the vital structures to which free radicals produce their most damaging effects on your cells. Vitamin E helps your skin stay youthful by protecting against UV radiation. However, taking vitamin E does not excuse you from using daily sunscreen. Scientific evidence shows that vitamin E may be instrumental in helping you fight aging at a cellular level. Long before we see outward evidence of aging such as wrinkles, gray hair, etc., the damage begins at a cellular level.

Recommendation for supplement : for daily dosage, take 200 IU for younger patients and 400 IU for patients in their forties and fifties. As vitamin E can interfere with the ability of your blood to clot, so do not take this vitamin if you are on blood thinners or proceeding an operation soon.

Good food sources : wholegrains; egg yolks; green vegetables; seed oils and vegetable oils.

CoQ10

CoQ10 is necessary for the production of enzyme Q10 in the mitochondria in your cells. It also acts as an antioxidant, protecting the cell membrance and is essential for healthy skin. CoQ10 deactivates some of the free radicals that are released during the energy-generating process. At the same time, it takes part in the energy-gaining process. We do produce CoQ10 for ourselves; however, the problem is that the production of CoQ10 declines by about 50 percent by middle age, so does our energy level.

Recommendation for supplement : take 100 mg per day with meals. However, this drug can interact with many other drugs, so you should consult your doctor before taking this CoQ10.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha lipoic acid, a nature powerful antioxidant, increases the positive effects of other antioxidants such as vitamin A and E, protects these vitamins in the body and helps them to do a better job of squashing free radicals. It also helps protect DNA from metals that can generate free radicals. Alpha lipoic acid can actually increase a cell’s metabolism, meaning the cell increases its energy production and capacity to heal. It can also prevent glycation, the harmful effect of sugar in the blood, which helps to prevent premature aging and skin damage. It can also work wonders on aging skin and has shown to treat lines, wrinkles, dull skin, under-eye bags and puffiness when using topically.

Recommendation for supplement : take 100 mg daily. Make sure to take it with a significant amount of food because it is both fat and water soluble and because it can be very irritating on an empty stomach.
