Protect Your Skin From Premature Aging With Skinceuticals Skincare

Have you heard of this skincare brand named SkinCeuticals? Well, if you are always on the lookout for well-formulated antioxidant serums, you probably will be familiar with SkinCeuticals.

SkinCeuticals is a professional skincare brand that is only available at selected spa, aesthetics and hospitals. It has a well-deserved reputation for producing serious-minded, research-driven products such as their well-formulated antioxidant treatments with key ingredients including L-ascorbic Acid, a-Tocopherol, Ferulic Acid and Phloretin. SkinCeuticals is one of the first companies to partner with physicians to offer skincare products in their offices.

SkinCeuticals is founded by Dr. Sheldon Pinnell in 1994. Founding scientist Dr. Sheldon Pinnell is the Chief of Dermatology of Duke University who has 38 years of skin cancer and skin disease research.

A couple of weeks ago, I was delighted to have a very private get-together session with the Product Manager of SkinCeuticals to preview a range of SkinCeuticals products and to learn some useful beauty tips to prevent premature aging. I’m always very interested in SkinCeuticals as it offers some of the best L-ascorbic acid and retinol products.

skinceuticals phloretin CF gel

The first two products I was being introduced are Phloretin CF Gel and Phloretin CF. Both serums have the same formulation but only in different consistency.

skinceuticals phloretin CF

Phloretin CF (priced at S$268), a broad-action antioxidant treatment, is formulated with 2% Phloretin, 10% L-ascorbic acid and 0.5% Ferulic acid.

Benefits :

  • Prevents premature signs of aging
  • Corrects existing photodamage, particularly age spots and laxity
  • Boosts skin’s natural defenses against DNA damage
  • Helps stimulate collagen synthesis
  • Accelerates cell turnover

L-ascorbic acid, one of the best Vitamin C and also my favorite ingredient, helps to stimulate the growth of collagen in human fibroblasts. It also helps to protect skin from premature photo-aging by neutralizing free radicals and it is a useful adjunct to sunscreen. However L-ascorbic acid is highly unstable and lose its effectiveness easily. For Vitamin C to be effective, all SkinCeuticals antioxidants meet the Duke Patent Parameters – using only Pure Vitamin C in optimal concentrations with correct acidic PH level.

Phloretin, the newest antioxidant breakthrough, is claimed to help accelerate cell renewal and is a anti-inflammatory and a pigment regulator. This powerful antioxidant is found in the skin of apples and root bark of fruit trees including apple, pear and grapefruit.

Ferulic acid is an antioxidant that helps absorbs UV and neutralize free radicals. When Ferulic acid is applied after UV damage, it is demonstrated to have the ability to repair DNA.

skinceuticals phloretin CF gel

Phloretin CF Gel (priced at S$268), launched last year in 2012, has the same formulation as Phloretin CF with 2% Phloretin, 10% L-ascorbic acid and 0.5% Ferulic acid but in gel consistency. It is suitable for those with oily skin type.

If you are looking for a full protection against premature aging, I will strongly recommended you to incorporate an antioxidant into your day skin care regimen. Read on to find out why!

The Facts About Photoaging

One very important thing about premature aging I’ve learned from SkinCeuticals is :

90% of visible premature aging is caused by UV radiation from the sun. SUNSCREENS ARE NOT ENOUGH.

Even the best broad-spectrum sunscreen only blocks :

  • OVER HALF of the UV-induced free radicals
  • NONE of the IRA-induced free radicals

Many beauty brands will emphasis on skin protection against UVA and UVB rays. UVA (causes aging) penetrates beyond the epidermis into the deep dermal layers whilst UVB (causes burning) only penetrates the very top layer of the skin, the epidermis. However there’s another wavelength, infrared radiation A (IRA), which is believed to be more dangerous that penetrates beyond dermis into the subcutaneous layer. Ultraviolet (UV) and infrared radiation A (IRA) are types of energy emitted by the sun (and all warm or hot objects such as oven and hairdryer) and proven to generate free radicals, damaging molecules that lead to premature fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and laxity.

SkinCeuticals Breakthrough Scientific Discovery

While sunscreens absorb and reflect light, they can only protect up to 390nm. Antioxidants do not absorb or reflect light. They neutralize UV- and IRA-induced free radicals (not blocked by sunscreens) generated by the full solar spectrum.
