Is Body Soap Too Harsh For My Skin?

How many of you are still using body soap nowadays? YES YES ME ME!!!!

Well, you probably may find it old fashioned to use a soap but for me, I just love the foamy feeling. Many of you shun using soap thinking it may be harsh to the skin and prefer to use shower gel or cream instead. Yes it is true that it may be harsh for your face but not for the body.

For me, I never like shower gel or cream, I just don’t like the feel of it. Since very young, I have followed my mom’s footstep to wash my body with soap. The soaps I’ve used so far help my skin feeling refreshing and smooth.

Occasionally, some friends and colleagues will compliment and envy my smooth-looking fair skin. And I will tell them jokingly that my beauty secret to that is to bathe with milk (alike Cleopatra). And in fact some of them actually believe me OMG!!! HAHAHA!!!!

Myth for soap v.s. shower cream : Soap will make your skin drier and shower cream will make your skin silky smooth. Yes and no, it very much depends greatly on the brands you use.

Here are some brands you may want to consider when searching for body soap :

Crabtree & Evelyn – Face and Body Soap

Box of Chocolate Bon Bon Soap – $7.90

L’occitane Shea Butter Extra Gentle Soap – $10.00

L’occitane Exfoliating Body Soap – $5.00

The Body Shop – Body Focus Toning Scrub Soap - $6.00

LUSH Fresh Handmade Soap

Try Handmade soap but read the ingredients carefully. Glycerin is a by-product of soapmaking and in most cases they are removed and sold to cosmetic companies for making lotions, moisturisers, etc for even higher price than the soap. A good soap does sweat and can be a little softer than one that has been ‘enhence’. I have found that it takes a while for results to show, little things like I can shave my legs without leaving a trail of scabs behind, my leg is no longer dry and scaly. Once you’ve tried the right handmade soap there is no turning back and it is so fun to try out what new stuff they bring in. I’m constantly in search of my perfect handmade soap.

A good bar of soap retains all the glycerin, making all the difference. I read somewhere that 1/5 glycerin and 4/5 soap is usually the ratio handmade soap is made up of. I think it must be the glorious glycerin left behind that keeps my skin moisturised.
